TROJAN THURSDAY 3/24/16

Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

Boys Golf – Our boys lost to Beckman on Tuesday by a final of 200-192 at their home course, Tustin Ranch.  On a very windy day, Koichiro Sato shot even par 36 to lead our team and Beckman’s team.  Koichiro has had a great start. He was the OC Varsity Golfer of the week last week. Congratulations Koichiro and keep up the work. Currently, we are ranked #4 in the county.

Girls Lacrosse – The Lady Trojans began league play this week with two tough matches against Beckman and Irvine.  The Lady Trojans made more team history by coming out strong against Beckman and scoring the first few goals.  Although they ended up losing the match 18-10, it was a very impressive showing from the girls, who played extremely well and really challenged the Beckman squad.  10 goals is also a first against Beckman, so kudos to the attack for finishing the opportunities they created.  Against Irvine, it was a different story with the team netting a win, 10-3.  Irvine played tough and definitely made the match a challenge, but the girls kept forcing turnovers and maintaining control in the offensive end to ensure Irvine never really had a chance to get in the game.  Jr. Ashlyn Wang led the team with 6 goals!!  The team is back in action in their first home game against CdM the Monday after Spring Break, so come out and support!

Softball – Our girls played one game this week and it was an impressive 14-3 run rule victory. Our girls look to stay hot this afternoon as they welcome Estancia for a 3:15 game. Good luck softball.

Boys Swim – Last week, the Uni boys swim team narrowly missed beating Santa Margarita, the #2 ranked team in Orange County. This week, we opened up our league meet season with dominant wins over Beckman at all levels.

Girls Swim – The Uni  girls swimmers were very busy with three meets this past week.  Last Thursday they swam against the 2015 CIF-SS defending champions, Santa Margarita HS.  Freshman Riley Lexvold, in her first meet as a Trojan, became the first Trojan female swimmer to swim to automatic CIF qualifying times, winning both her individual events, the 200 IM (2:05.79) and the 100 back (57.92.). She also helped both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay teams lower their CIF consideration times.  Senior Princess Ferguson-Nguyen made a CIF consideration time in the 50 free and also swam  on both of the above relays. The 400 freestyle relay also made a CIF consideration time, giving the Uni girls CIF consideration times in all three relays early in the season.

On Saturday the girls participated in the Millikan Relays finals.  Although the varsity girls qualified relays in all 7 events, they were only able to swim 5 of the 7 in finals due to illness and scheduling conflicts for some of the varsity swimmers, leading to a 6th place finish in the meet.

Yesterday,  the Uni swimmers had their first league meet against Beckman HS.  Our girls won by a large margin. The varsity girls won 2 out of the 3 relays and  5 out of 8 individual events.   Freshman Riley Lexvold continued her winning ways, winning both her individual events, the 50 free, with a CIF consideration time of 24.95, and the 100 breast, with a CIF consideration time of 1:09.40. Diana Zhang, Sarah Sharifi and Yuuri Yoshikawa went 1,2,3 in the 200 IM, and Celine Nie, Claire Jang and Bella Khamseh went 1,2,3 in the 100 free.  Junior Anne Jang posted a CIF consideration time in the 100 back with a 1:02.60.

The girls will be training hard over spring break, and open the second half of the season on 4/4 against cross-town rival Northwood HS.  Good luck, girls!

Tennis –The boys varsity tennis team, the #1ranked team in Orange County, opened league play with a 12-6 win over Beckman high school, currently ranked 3rd. Hudson Graf and Patryk Kozlowski won all 3 sets at doubles.  Garrett Kurtz and Naevin anukornchaikul won 2 of 3 sets playing singles. The boys improve to a record of 8 wins and 1 loss on the season. Next up – UNI will take part this weekend in the national All-American Tournament in Newport Beach. Good Luck this weekend boys!

Boys Track – Boys Track and Field had a difficult loss to Huntington Beach losing by one point. Both of our relay teams were victorious. Some outstanding performances came from Darrius Ouland and Kevin Yamapath in high jump, Danny Gilbertson, Alex Madrid and Louis Mahab in the 110 high hurdles, Danny Gilbertson and Alex Madrid in the 300 hurdles, Kevin Yamapath in the long jump, Luke Ruan and Brett Miller in the 400, Harry Baker and Jeremy Koo in the 200, Kevin Yamapath, Rio Gibson and Nick Loveland in the triple jump, Harry Baker and Jeremy Koo in the 100 and Austin Kim in the disc. Today, we are away for our first league at Beckman. Go Trojan Track and Field!

Girls Track – Girls Track and Field competed against a tough Huntington Beach team here at UNI last Thursday, losing to HB by only 6 points. Paige Metayer was Uni’s top scorer with wins in the 400m, 800m, and anchoring our 4x400m relay team with Janine Bryant, Sara Sussman, and Christine Li. We look forward to more exciting races from Metayer as she hopes to break Uni’s school record in the 400m this season. Cecilia Langlois had a breakthrough performance in her first 1600m ever, winning the varsity race in an impressive 5:33. Our other first place finishers were Leyna Wood in the 100m and  Melissa Lee in the shot put and discus. Other top performances came from Abby Sanders, Setareh Emadi, Sophie Lawrence, Andrea White and Daria Shkel. Come support our girls today in our first regular season meet at Beckman HS at 3:00! Go Trojans!

What’s Going on at UNI

Weight Room Upgrades – the athletic department is working hard to raise funds to make much needed upgrades to our weight room. Almost every UNI student will work out in the UNI weight room in their time here. The weight room is used every period with the PE classes and is used by our athletic teams in the afternoon.  Our goal is to make the weight room safer by bringing in new equipment and getting rid of or fixing broken equipment. We began this process a few weeks ago and the students love what we have done so far. Our benches were falling apart and we had every bench re upholstered and replaced missing parts to our equipment. We replaced broken or stolen weights to make sure we have complete sets of dumbbells and kettlebells. Just this week we received our new bumper weights. We also purchased class sets of medicine balls for our students to use. We see the response from our students and we would like to continue with the upgrades to the weight room. Once again the major obstacle holding us back is money. We would like to raise enough money to purchase new bars, jump ropes, and plyo boxes. We would also like to purchase space saving squat and bench press racks to open up the room to make the weight room safer and allow more students to participate in the weight room. We had originally wanted to make these upgrades over the next few years but it really is time to make this room amazing for our UNI students. All of our current equipment was purchased in 1992. Our bars and weights have been dropped for 24 years now and they are almost all destroyed.

We are asking the UNI community for help in raising funds for this project. We are trying to raise $6,000. This would give us enough money to purchase the racks, new weights, and 9 new bars for the weight room. Between the athletic department and PE department we have already poured $20,000 into this upgrade. We are so close to finishing these needed upgrades but we are out of funds. If you can help please let Coach McCaffrey know or drop off a check to the athletic office. Checks should be made out to UHS and on the memo line note weight room.

We would like to thank the following programs for their support of the weight room upgrades. Football, Boys and Girls Water Polo, and Boys Volleyball have all contributed money towards this project.

TROJAN THURSDAY 3/17/16

Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

Baseball – The Trojan Varsity baseball team is 4-3 having lost in the Newport Elks Semi Finals to Beckman 11-0. The Varsity opens league this Friday again vs Beckman. Beckman is rated 8th in the county and 3rd in CIF, The Trojans will throw ace Jacob Collins who has thrown 16 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run this season. The Trojans are led offensively by Neil Boudreau. Isiaiah Francis . Alex Uy and Will Faure. Kahi Rodrigues has done a fantastic job catching. Good luck Baseball!

Boys Golf – Boy’s Golf: We completed the pre-season matches at 3-1.  Last Thursday, we beat Huntington Beach 185-196. Koichiro Sato, senior, scored a 3 under par 33. Yesterday, we began league by beating Corona del Mar 178 – 191.  Our team score was really impressive. We had three players shoot 34 (2-under par)…Koichiro Sato, William Tse (junior), and Connor Obrien (freshman).  Sophomore, Griffin Pace added an even par 36.  The total was 2-under par. This was a good start to our league schedule. Great job golfers!

Boys Lacrosse – The Uni Boy’s lacrosse team had a very entertaining game vs Vista Murrieta.  Down 3-1, they came back 3-3, with a great opportunity to go up 4-3 going into halftime. At the start of the second half, UNI came out ready to go and took the lead 6-3 it seemed like in seconds, with some great execution, passing and shooting in their 2-2-2 offense. The visiting team put on a great fourth quarter which was not matched by the UNI squad, with the game ending in a loss 11-8. This team is improving every week and every game.

Girls Lacrosse – The Girls Lacrosse team has started the season with an impressive run of 4 wins and only 1 loss in preseason.  The team also participated in the Rosebowl Jamboree tournament in Pasadena, recording a loss against Downey High  School, but picking up wins against Peninsula (5-4) and Mira Costa (8-2).  Raeann Artim had the game winning goal in overtime against Peninsula in a very exciting match!  The team also participated in the LA/OC Shootout and represented the OC well, notching wins against Peninsula again and La Canada (a dominant 18-4 victory!).  The team is led in offense by Junior Ashlyn Wang, who has picked up an impressive 19 goals thus far!  Sarah Verdegan (12 goals) and Amanda Shubin (8 goals), are also huge assets in the offense.  The defense, led by veteran returners Courtney Le and Phoebe Solomon has been stingy in allowing goals, contributing to the success of the program.  With one final preseason match today, against Sage Hill, the team is preparing to kick off league play next week with matches against Beckman and Northwood.  The action then resumes after Spring Break with a home match against CdM on Monday, April 4th.  Come out and support these girls as they continue to excel on the field!

Softball – Since our season opener, the Lady Trojans have gone 4-3 with a 2nd place finish in the Costa Mesa Tournament. A 5-4 win against Los Amigos featured a complete game thrown by sophomore Janette Oh and an RBI triple from Alexis Arredondo to score Aubrey Maher. A 13-5 win against Costa Mesa showcased junior Aubrey Maher going 3-3 plus a walk, scoring 4 runs, Zoe Manjarrez going 4-4 with 3 RBI’s and a win in the circle for Alexis Arredondo. The Trojans third win in a row came against Orange 5-1 at home with freshman Monet Allister hitting two big doubles to the fence, freshman Kami Parsa going 2-3 with a  run scored and another complete game from Janette Oh. This past Saturday, the Trojans took it to Laguna Beach with a 22-1 no-hitter win from both Alexis and Janette in the circle.  Zoe Manjarrez went 4-4 plus a walk scoring 5 runs, Michela Boarnet went 5-5 with 3 big doubles and Alexis Arredondo hit 2 doubles. A heartbreaking bottom of the 7th loss to Anaheim featured homeruns by Aubrey Maher and senior Anna Hawkins and sophomore Peyton Mattson going 2-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored. The Trojans will close out the LA Quinta Tournament today at home versus Westminster at 3:15. Come support!

Boys Swim – The UNI boys swim team competed at the Millikan Relay Meet and placed 2nd by a narrow margin in Varsity. Currently we are ranked 3rd in Orange County, and are facing the number 2 team Santa Margarita today.

Girls Swim – The Uni swimmers had a dual meet at Laguna Hills High School on 3/10/16, and the annual Irvine Relays meet on 3/11/16. The varsity girls beat Laguna Hills by a score of 98-69.  Notable swims at this meet included the 200 Medley Relay team of Alondra Ortiz, Sarah Sharifi, Erica Ervoes and Claire Jang who came in first with a CIF consideration time of 1:57.88. The first place 200 Freestyle relay team of Claire Jang, Bella Khamseh, Sarah Sharifi and Celine Nie also made a CIF consideration time, and sophomore Alondra Ortiz made the first individual CIF consideration time of the season in the 100 backstroke.

The varsity girls came in 3rd in their division at the Irvine City Relays, an all relay meet including 3  Irvine high school teams along with Beckman HS from Tustin ( Woodbridge did not compete this year).  There were a lot of fast splits and the 200 Medley relay team of Alondra Ortiz, Sarah Sharifi, Anne Jang, and Claire Jang lowered the previous Uni CIF consideration time to 1:57.30.  Claire Jang swam the fastest Uni 50 freestyle split this year, 25.55.

On Tuesday 3/15/16, the girls participated in the preliminary heats of the annual Milikan Relays, held at Milikan HS in Long Beach.  The team will find out Friday which relay teams will make finals on Saturday afternoon.  The 200 Medley relay team of Riley Lexvold, Elysia Ouyang, Alondra Ortiz and Anne Jang lowered their CIF consideration qualifying time to 1:55.95

The team has also been training hard in preparation for their dual meet this afternoon against defending CIF Div. 1 Champions, Santa Margarita HS.   Good Luck, Uni swim!

Tennis – The boys tennis team improved to a 6-1 record overall with a 16 to 2 win over Fountain Valley.  Jake Yoon and Leo Krapp swept at third doubles for the Trojans.  Freshmen Reini Igna also won his two sets playing singles.  The Trojans, the #1 ranked team in the OC, also defeated Tesoro high school 17 to 1 last Thursday.  The boys are back in action at Dana Hills this afternoon. Good Luck Tennis!

Boys Track – Boys Track and Field competed against Godinez last week here at Uni. Our boys were able to walk away with a great victory.  We were able start off with a convincing win in the 4 x 100 relay. Our top point scorer for the meet was Harry Baker with a win in the 100, 200 and the final leg of the 4 x 100. Some stand out performances came from Eric Kawana, Darius Outland, Rashaun Sims, Kevin Yamapath, Danny Gilberstson, Alex Madrid, Chris Flattum, Harry Baker, Nick Loveland, Jeremy Koo, Janry Ayaso and Austin Kim. This afternoon we go up against Huntington Beach here at Uni. Come out and support all of our track stars. Go Trojan Track and Field

Girls Track – Girls Track and Field had a big win at our home meet last week against Godinez, scoring first place in 14 out of 15 events. Daria Shkel and Leyna Wood were the top scorers for the Varsity girls. Shkel had wins in the high jump and triple jump and a 2nd place finish in the 100m. Wood finished 1st in the 100m and long jump and led our team to victory in the 4x100m relay. Melissa Lee also continued her sweep of the throwing events, winning the shot put and discus. Other notable performances came from Janine Bryant, Sonia Lin, Paige Metayer, Lauryn Wood, and Isadora Hong. We have another home track meet this Thursday against Huntington Beach at 2:45 pm, come out and support! Go Trojans!

In the scrimmage against San Juan Hills, the Varsity lost 4-3 and the Tustin game was a 10-8 loss.  Both games were non-league contests. The UNI team is looking really good early and will only improve.  This year’s team has one of the best defenses the program has ever fielded. Come out and watch the team Friday vs Norco, 4:00pm start in the stadium. Go Trojans Lacrosse!

Girls Lacrosse – Our girls will be traveling to Pasadena this weekend to play is the Rose Bowl Classic. What a great experience for our girls. Good Luck girls and we hope you have a great experience at the Rose Bowl.

Freshmen Alexis Arredondo made her impressive Varsity debut on the mound and at the plate reaching base safely three times including a double to the fence. Senior Captains Michela Boarnet and Anna Hawkins jumpstarted a 4 run inning with back-to-back hits to keep us in the game. The outfield crew of Alyssa Hernandez, Zoe Manjarrez, Peyton Mattson and Janette Oh had a great showing with solid defense, back-up and great throws home. Junior Aubrey Maher and Freshman Monet Allister anchored the infield with consistent, dependable defense. We look forward to our first tournament games in the Costa Mesa Tournament Saturday at 9am and 3pm. Good Luck this weekend girls.

Boys Swim – Boys Swimming kicked off its season on Tuesday with an intersquad meet. Highlights from the meet included CIF consideration times for seniors Stephen Yang and Jarod Yoshihara, as well as the Medley Relay team composed of Jarod Yoshihara, Austin Yan, Stephen Yang, and Ian Du. The team will continue its busy week with a dual meet at Laguna Hills on Thursday and the first match-up with league rivals Irvine and Northwood at the Irvine Relays on Friday. Go Uni Swim!

Tennis – The UNI boys’ tennis team is off to a great start to the 2016 season.  The boys lost 5 important starters from last year’s team and have been trying to integrate all of the new players into a cohesive unit.  Currently the team has won two matches, defeating Santa Margarita Catholic high school 16 to 2 and perennial power Harvard-Westlake school of Los Angeles 13 to 4.  The one loss came against the top ranked team in CIF, San Marino high, 8-10.  Returning varsity players include captains Tommy Wang and Josh Piatos, JT Joens, Hans Hwang and Patryk Kozlowski.  Senior Garrett Kurtz is back from injury, Hudson Graf has rejoined the team after a year of home schooling and Julian LaFond has transferred in from Irvine high.  Sophomore singles player Naevin Anukornchaikul is playing incredible tennis and has emerged as one of the best players on the team.  The Trojans have also added freshmen Michael Rudin, Reini Igna, Luis Moros, Abhi Anish and Minwoo Kwon as well as a vastly improved group of boys from last year’s JV team including Jake Yoon, Leo Krapp, Ben Sui, Anthony Juan and Harry Liang.

UNI Athletic Fundraiser – UNI will be the host site of a large 5v5 soccer tournament on March 12th and 13th. This is a huge event and they have divisions for all age ranges. Last year our boys and girls soccer teams sent teams to this tournament and they both won their divisions. If you have any younger kids or know someone who might be interested in putting a team together please click on the link below for all of the information. UNI Athletics receives a percentage of all monies brought in from this tournament so let’s get a lot of teams playing.
