Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

Boys and Girls Cross Country

This past weekend UNI XC was at Mt. Sac, the world largest cross country invitational! Our varsity girls placed 7th overall in the Division 1 race. Cecilia Langlois had an outstanding performance, placing second overall with a time of 18:56. Rounding out our top 10 were Sara Sussman, Avery Klauke, Mackenzie Field, Allison Schaal, Madeleine Boschen, Juli Brom, Janine Bryant, Gentil Nguyen and Anna Pan. Our GOW is next Thursday, 11/3, at Mason Park starting at 1pm for the PCL League Finals. This will be the final race of the season for many of our athletes. Come out and support! Go Trojan Running!

The Boys Cross Country was also at the Mt. Sac Cross Country invitational this last weekend. Our top runner on the day was Freshman Ryan Duffy followed by Zach Dignan, Ryan Liang, Abhi Nisha Anesh, Christian Go, Nathan Gali, Nick Choi, Justin Soliman, and Luke Ruan. Next week the boys will be competing in League finals at Mason Park. It is our GOW. Come out and support. Go Trojan Running!

Football

The Uni Trojans gave a great effort last Thursday night against the #1 seed in the league, Corona Del Mar. In the first quarter, the Trojans marched the length of the field for an impressive scoring drive to cut the lead to 14-7.  Despite our great efforts, No. 12 ranked Corona Del Mar pulled away in the second half for the win.  You can read more about last week’s game at www.OCVarsity.com.

Please come out to support the players this Friday, October 28th for Football’s GOW!  Wear your Trojan Army T-shirt and bring your spirit to the Uni Stadium as the Trojans take on Irvine High School.   It is going to be a great game with a lot of energy.  You won’t want to miss it!

Girls Golf

We qualified four girls for the CIF SS Championships: Samantha Cabunag, Kristin Shea, Dana Choi and Nodoka Honda. On Monday, 10/31, we will play in the Team CIF Divisional. The winner of that tournament will be crowned as a CIF Champion. Last year at this tournament the team finished third. Good luck Girls!

Girls Volleyball

University girls volleyball finished the season with a 3-7 record after beating  Northwoood last Thursday in 3 straight games 25-19, 25-22, and 25-21 but lost to CDM in 3 on Tuesday. This year has been a successful year in terms of how the girls are competing. Our level of play has been on the rise. Credit is due to the senior class of 2016. The senior consist of Dominique Abraham, Erissa Pooee, Sherin Sayrany, Sophie Lawrence, Ashley Kim, Alma Entasari, Sydney Cercado, Leylee Sahrai, Kira Cashman, Bella Oldham.  These girls have been the drive of this program and are one of the reasons we have been able to bring our level of play up the last couple years. They have put in so much hard work and always doing extra to get ahead in every way possible. They have laid a foundation for the next generation to build on. They have shown the younger talent what it takes to compete with the best. We will miss this senior class and wish them the best.

This Thursday (10/27) we will be having a fundraiser at Chipotle in the University town center for the Girls volleyball program. This helps raise money for the girls to have the best opportunities to get more training and helps the girls with equipment and uniforms. Please try and stop by between 5pm and 8pm Thursday. Don’t forget to mention your there for University Girls Volleyball.

Team playoffs will start on Wednesday Nov. 2nd.

The girls are currently involved in the PCL individual tournament.  Uni will have two doubles teams in the semi-finals today (10/27) at Woodbridge high.  Ashlyn Wang and Halla Alajeely will be in one semi while Kayla Agustina and Sasha Iraniha will be in the other.

Boys Water Polo

Uni Boys water polo team plays a Pacific coast league game today vs. Irvine H.S. at their home pool William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center, varsity at 4pm. The Trojans will play their game of the week at Uni home pool Tuesday Nov. 1st vs. Woodbridge, varsity at 4pm, prior to the game we will recognize our 10 seniors. Our last game of the season will be a non-league match at Laguna Hills H.S. Thursday Nov.3rd. After that point we will wait to see if CIF will may possibly invite us to the division 4 playoffs. Boys and Girls Cross Country

It was another amazing Saturday for the OC Cross Country Championships. We had 54 of our 95 male athletes out for PSAT and PACT testing. Our few remaining seniors made up the Varsity team for the day. Our top finisher on the day was Abhi Nisha Anesh followed by Ryan Duffy, Nick Choi, Zach Dignan and Raja Barta rounding out our top 5. That’s right 3 freshman, one sophomore and a senior made up the top 5. This week we compete at the Mt Sac Cross Country Invitational. Go Trojan Running!

Football

The Uni Trojans came through with a 24-21 win against Northwood on Friday and improve to 6-1. You can read all about the game and the exciting finish in the OC Varsity article below.

Come support the Trojans tonight (10/20) as they take on Corona Del Mar at their away game in the Estancia High School Stadium. The Freshman will play away against Corona Del Mar today (10/20) at 3 p.m., and JV will host Corona Del Mar at home tomorrow, Friday (10/21) at 3 p.m.  We hope to see you out there supporting all our teams as they work to improve their league records this week!

Loveland field goal helps University top Northwoodfootball-10-14-16

CONTRIBUTING WRITER – OC Varsity.com

IRVINE – For the second year in a row, University beat Northwood with a late field goal.

Nick Loveland booted a 22-yard field goal with three seconds left, and the Trojans escaped with a 24-21 win over the Timberwolves

“He did it last year too against Northwood,” University coach Mark Cunningham said of Loveland. “I have a lot of confidence in him. But I will tell you what, Northwood played so tough tonight. We were glad to get this one.”

It was a back-and-forth contest all night. Northwood (1-6, 1-1) tied the score, 21-21, on a 3-yard TD by quarterback Brandon Johnson with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter.

University (6-1, 1-1) looked like it might take the lead with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter. Alex Pourdanesh reached the goal line on a run, but when trying to get to get in, he fumbled the ball through the end zone for a Northwood touchback.

Four plays later, the Timberwolves went for it on fourth-and-1 at their own 29-yard line. University’s defensive line stopped Johnson inches short of the first down with 2:05 to play.

The Trojans then had sophomore quarterback Thomas Keeling step up to help set up the field goal.

On fourth-and-13 from the 32, Keeling found Darrius Outland open for 14 yards and a first down and two plays later Keeling connected with Outland on a 13-yard pass play to the 5.

University, which hurt itself with penalties and two turnovers on the night, moved the ball to the middle of the field and Loveland was perfect with the kick for the win.

Keeling completed 8 of 15 passes for 98 yards. University also got big performances from Pourdanesh, who had 134 yards rushing.

Clark Smith, who finished with 140 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, including one for 70 yards in the first half, and Jalen Robertson, who returned a kickoff 82 yards to give University a 21-14 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Johnson rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns and passed for another 46 yards to pace Northwood.

Girls Golf

Girls Golf clinched first place in the PCL with a win over Woodbridge yesterday. Our girls finished the regular season at 9-1 in league and 14-1 overall. Dana Choi shot a 1-under 35 for the low score and Nodoka Honda came in at even par 36. This team had a pretty special regular season. The girls came in under par as a team in three different matches at three different golf courses. This is quite a spectacular achievement in the world of girl’s high school team golf. What made the accomplishment of winning league even better was doing it while being ranked number one in the county the entire season. That is a difficult thing to do.

Now we move on to the post season. The girls will be playing for a spot in the individual CIF regional on 10/19 and 10/20 at league finals. The team has qualified for a spot already in the team CIF divisional and will be the favorite (no pressure). Be on the lookout for the team and it’s accomplishments on OC Varsity (Register).

Girls Volleyball

The University Varsity girls played Beckman away on Tuesday, the 18th.   We lost in 3 games. Game 1 was 18-25.  Game 2 was 12-25  Game 3 we lost 17-25.  The girls had 39 digs overall. 15 of those digs were done by senior Sydney Cercado.  Senior Kira Cashman had the highest amount of kills at 10 kills. She also had the best average on serve receive at a 2.2 out of 3. Senior Bella Oldham had the next highest kill count at 8 kills.  In the first game after being down 8-19, the girls fought back until the end at 18-25.  Even though the girls are not as physical as Beckman, they make up for it in the hard work and effort they put into it.

Although our season is coming to a close, we would still love the support at our last two away games.  Today, Thursday, Oct 20 we play Northwood HS @ NHS and next week Tuesday, Oct 25 we play our last match against Corona Del Mar @ CDM.  Both matches JV/FS starts at 4pm followed by Varsity at 5:15pm.

And as we wind down our season, can you tell we’re getting a bit wacky?   Here we are on  “Wacky Wednesday”……

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team has had an up and down week.  Last Thursday the girls played a great match defeating Northwood 12-6. Tiffany Markus and Jackie Yoon swept all three sets playing 2nd doubles.  Dana Feng had yet another great day winning 2 of 3 sets playing 2nd singles.  And, Halla Alajeely was down 0-5 and won 7 games in a row to win the set 7-5 playing first singles.

Unfortunately the girls lost yesterday to League leading CDM. Captains Kayla Agustin and Ashlyn Wang won two of three sets at first doubles.  Their one loss marked the first time they lost a doubles set in league play this year.

The girls are back in action today (10/20) against Irvine.  Good luck Uni Tennis!

Boys Water Polo

Uni Boys Water Polo will travel to Northwood H.S. this Thursday October 20th for a second round Pacific Coast League game, varsity starts at 4pm. The Trojans lost yesterday at Beckman Tues Oct 18th. Over the previous weekend, the Boys varsity went 3-2 in the Nogales tournament with victories over Western, Sierra Vista & Tesoro while falling to Walnut and San Dimas. Daniel Campanaro broke the 100 goals scored barrier over the weekend, and stands currently at 117 tallies for the season and is top in Orange County. Ben Gomez is at about 60 goals (doubled his total from last year) and is among the top 4 in league. Next week the Trojans host CDM on Tuesday Oct. 25th at Uni Pool and travel to play at Irvine H.S. on Thurs Oct. 27th. Thanks for your support!

The Uni Trojans lost their first game this season to Beckman last Friday night, despite a “furious rally” in the 4th quarter to end the game 21-24.  You can read all about it in the OC Varsity article below.   Despite the loss, we had a packed house for our Homecoming Game and we were once again nominated for SoCal Sideline’s Southern California Student Section of the Week!

Beckman survives fourth-quarter scare from University

October 07, 2016 10:00 PM
By TIM BURT
STAFF WRITER – OC Varsity.com

IRVINE – Beckman survived a furious rally by University and held on for a 24-21 victory over the Trojans in a thrilling Pacific Coast League opener Friday night at University.

Beckman (3-3, 1-0) appeared to be in command with a 17-0 lead going into the final quarter but University (5-1, 0-1) scored three touchdowns in the fourth to take it the wire.

“It’s huge,” Beckman coach Marcello Giuliano said. “They were on a two-year streak of dismantling people and they came in 5-0. I was just super proud of how hard our kids played.”

Quarterback Dean Nagle, who passed for two touchdowns and 263 yards, led the Beckman offense but Giuliano said the Patriots’ defense set the tone.

“It started with defense,” Giuliano said. “We were pitching a shutout for most of the game and we caused turnovers and we (forced) a lot of negative plays. That was a defensive game through and through and they deserve a ton of credit and when it was time to come through Dean and the receivers did an awesome job.”

University came charging back in the fourth quarter behind quarterback Thomas Keeling, who passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

The Trojans cut Beckman’s lead to 17-14 when Zachary Goodfriend scored on a 1-yard run with 6:39 left.

University then recovered an onside kick but had to kick again when the Trojans were called for an illegal formation.

The Trojans decided not to attempt another onside kick, and Beckman extended its lead to 24-14 when Nagle connected with Mikael Mian on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 3:26 left.

University refused to fold, however. Keeling found Clark Smith on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 2:52 remaining to cut Beckman’s lead to 24-21.

But Beckman recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

Beckman capped the first half when I’Jon Akahi took a screen pass from Nagle and turned it into a 56-yard touchdown for a 10-0 lead with 1:18 left in the second quarter.

Beckman’s Liam Molina opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal with 6:33 left in the second quarter.

University turned the ball over three times (two fumbles).

Beckman plays Corona del Mar in its next game on Thursday at Tustin while University hosts Northwood.

Girls Golf

Tuesday we beat Northwood 179-208 at Oak Creek Golf Club. This was our third score this year in the 170’s, which is an unbelievable girl’s golf score. Nodoka Honda (soph) and Coco Yang (fresh) shot a 2-under par 34 to lead the way. Wednesday we took down Beckman at their home course Tustin Ranch Golf Club, 195-201. This puts us in a position to win the league, but we have to beat Woodbridge twice. The low scores yesterday were Samantha Cabunag and Nodoka Honda at 38. Our current record overall is 12-1.

University scores long awaited victory against Beckman

TUSTIN – After beating No. 3 Beckman, 195-201, on Wednesday, University girls golf coach Kevin Kasper told the No. 1 Trojans to take pride in and enjoy what they had just accomplished at Tustin Ranch Golf Club.

For the first time since 2012, the Trojans came out on top in a match on the Patriots’ home course.

But the celebration, Kasper cautioned, couldn’t last more than one night. Come morning, he said, it was a time to turn the page. An important date with Woodbridge awaits Thursday afternoon.

While Wednesday’s triumph against Beckman gives the Trojans inside track toward winning the Pacific Coast League championship which has belonged to Beckman for the past three seasons, University still has to win both of its remaining matches with the Warriors to wrap up first place.

“That is a really important match now,” Kasper said. “For us we would love to win league. It is no more important for us this year than any other year, but it is sure nice to come in here and win at this course. The home course advantage is huge for them here.”

University junior Samantha Cabunag said the Patriots have a clear edge over the visitors at Tustin Ranch when it comes to putting and short game.

“That is the big factor. It is always hard for us to adjust to that when it comes to different courses because everything is so much different,” she said. “It makes it that much harder.”

Cabunag said she didn’t have her best day at Tustin Ranch as she only holed one birdie on the front nine, but she still posted a 2-over-par 38 which tied Nodoka Honda for Trojan’s lowest score on Wednesday.

Cameron Lee earned medalist honors shooting a 2-under-par 34 to lead Beckman.

Wednesday’s match illustrates perfectly the Trojans’ strength this season. The worst score that University posted was a 40. It is rare for a girls golf team to have that much consistency and depth.

“This feels amazing. It is awesome,” Cabunag said after the victory. “It would be great for us to win league. We have been so close to beating them, but it has been a while since we have gotten there. Winning league would be a great thing for us to do this year.”

Girls Volleyball

The girls played CDM last Thursday and performed the best they have all season. Winning the first game of the match was a huge boost for the team’s confidence.  The girls lost the second game in a tough battle and jumped out in the third game and took control with an 11 point lead.  Despite losing game 3 and 4 the girls played so fearless and hard there was nothing to be disappointed about. The girls left it all on the court.

Tuesday’s game was senior night against Irvine. This senior night had 11 seniors to recognize. First 2 games of the match all the veterans took care of business and won the first 2 games. Irvine fought back to win the 3rd game. We took control of the match in the 4th and clinched the win against Irvine.   The team was lead by Kira Cashman who constantly killed the ball on the outside every game. She had a total of 17 kills and 3 blocks 6 digs. Jaylee Morse, as the right side hitter, contributed with 6 blocks and 5 kills for the game.  Bella Oldham with 14 kills and 4 digs.  Sydney Cercado had 10 digs for the match. The team is getting better every match. They also have a lot of determination to be the best they can this season. They have become a very competitive team and they are very fun to watch.

Please come out and support the girls at their game tonight (10/13)! The girls play at Woodbridge High School, lower levels at 4:00 followed by Varsity at 5:15.  Good luck Uni Volleyball!

Girls Tennis

Yesterday the girl’s tennis team lost a tough match to Peninsula high school 7 -11.  The Trojans are currently ranked 5th in CIF D-I and Pen is ranked 4th.  Kayla Agustin and Ashely Wang lost their first match together this year but still won 2 of 3 sets.  Halla Alajeely also won two of three at first singles for the Trojans.  Uni is 5-1 in league and 8-3 overall.

University starts crucial week with win over Beckmantennis-10-11-16

No matter how they sliced it, this was going to be the most taxing three-day stretch of the season for University’s girls tennis team.

The second-ranked Trojans passed their first test of the week, edging No. 9 Beckman, 11-7, in a Pacific Coast League match Tuesday afternoon at Beckman High.

Ashlyn Wang and Kayla Agustin remained unbeaten in league play, sweeping their doubles sets against the Patriots, including a 7-6 tiebreaker in the opening round that put University ahead, 4-2, headed into the second.

“That was definitely a big set for us,” University coach John Kessler said. “(Beckman) played great and we didn’t play particularly well. Ashley (Teng) keeps playing great. She’s as steady as they come. She doesn’t panic, even when she’s down.”

Teng – who is Beckman’s top singles player – swept her three sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, and improved her individual record to 44-2.

University collected the other six singles points on the afternoon, as Halla and Kamar Alajeely each grabbed two sets, as did sophomore Dana Feng.

The Trojans (8-2, 5-1) will host Peninsula on Wednesday afternoon, a nonleague match with major postseason seeding implications. In the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll, the Panthers were ranked No. 4 while University came in at No. 5.

On Thursday, the Trojans travel to take on fourth-ranked Northwood, which is looking to tie University for second place in the league standings.

University leads with its defense

IRVINE – A strong defensive effort by University carried the Trojans to a 32-0 win over Adelanto in a nonleague game at University High on Thursday night.

Despite the lopsided score, it wasn’t all good for University, which was flagged for 135 yards on 15 penalties.

“When you have that many penalties, I don’t care what game you’re in,” University coach Mark Cunningham said. “I don’t care what the score is. It’s not going to be good”

Adelanto (1-5) was also nicked for 64 yards on nine penalties.

But University (5-0) was strong on defense throughout, holding Adelanto (1-5) to just 15 yards rushing on 16 carries in the first half. The Trojans racked up 10 tackles for loss and three interceptions in the game.

“Defensively, we played well,” Cunningham said. “No matter what, can’t take that away. For that part, I was really pleased.”

The defense earned a safety as Adelanto snapped a punt out of the end zone in the first quarter, but the offense was sporadic.

University’s offense was waylaid by the penalties but was able to score in two bursts, one in each half.

With University leading, 2-0, late in the second quarter, Alex Pourdanesh pulled in a 26-yard reception from Thomas Keeling to set up his own 9-yard touchdown run.

Pourdanesh took University’s next offensive snap just 48 seconds later for a 31-yard touchdown burst and a 15-0 lead.

Pourdanesh finished with 13 carries for 98 yards.

In the final minute of the third quarter, Clark Smith sprung for a 27-yard run and Keeling hit Darius Outland with 30-yard TD pass for 22-0 lead.

The Trojans got back-to-back touchdowns as Anthony Medina grabbed a tipped interception on Adelanto’s next play and returned it 35 yards for a 29-0 lead.

Jalen Robertson pulled in University’s third interception on the next drive. Nick Loveland cashed in with a 19-yard field goal.

Girls Golf

Congratulations to Girls Golf on winning their last two matches against Irvine and CDM. Girls Golf beat Irvine at Oak Creek: 195-256.  The Freshman Duo, Coco Yang and Alexis Kim shot 35 and 36 respectively, to lead the Trojans.   The girls had a great match yesterday, 10/5, beating Corona Del Mar 176-200.  The Uni girls came in as a team at 4-under par.  According to Coach Kasper, it is probably a school record low.  Nodoka Honda, sophomore, shot a 5-under 31 to lead the scoring. Samantha Cabunag, Eugene Rhee and Coco Yang shot even par 36.

Our own Samantha Cabunag was named Girls Golf Athlete of the Week by OC Varsity! Congratulations Samantha!

Girls Volleyball

Come out and support the Girls Volleyball team as they play CDM today, 10/6 at home. Frosh-Soph and JV play at 3:30 and Varsity will follow at 4:45 p.m.  Good luck girls!

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team defeated Irvine 17 to 1 yesterday to move to 3-1 in league and 6 and 2 overall.  Last Thursday the girls lost a tough match to league rival CDM.  Kayla Agustin and Ashlyn Wang won all three sets playing first doubles.  Captain Kayla Agustin was the match MVP for the Trojans.  Kayla was on fire playing some of the best doubles we have seen here at Uni.  The girls are back in action on Thursday at Woodbridge.

Boys Water Polo

Varsity will be travelling to Corona del Mar H.S. today (10/6) for a 4pm Pacific Coast League Game. On Tuesday Oct. 4th the Boys hosted Northwood at our home Uni pool and unfortunately lost 17-12 behind a 6 goal performance from Uni’s Ben Gomez. Gomez also scored the game winning goal on Thurs Sept. 29th at Uni pool against Beckman as the Trojans beat the Patriots 16-15 in their first league game of the season. In that contest Daniel Campanaro scored 7 goals (currently #1 ranked goal scorer in Orange County) and Bennett Kidder (who is getting considerable interest from division 1 water polo colleges) added 3 goals and a game high 8 assists.
