Girls Basketball:

After coming off a loss to Huntington Beach, the Lady Trojan Basketball team bounced back to beat a top ranked team in Foothill.  They took home the 3rd place trophy in a very challenging South Coast tournament.  Malia Goldsmith had a tremendous game with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists.  Karissa Shin 13 points, Deja Rodgers added 11 points and Kaci Blailock had 11 points in the 60-47 win.  Then they went on to defeat Katella 51-31 with key performances by Kaci Blailock with 21 points, Malia Goldsmith added 11 points and Karissa Shin had 10 points and 13 rebounds.  Outstanding wins for the girls team.  The Lady Trojans will head to Tustin high for a tournament next week playing Trabuco Hills and Palos Verdes.

Girls Soccer:

The girls soccer program is off to a great start. In the last week we have played several games. The varsity has one too and tied one. The JV has won one, lost one, and tied one. The frosh-soph team is still looking for their first win. All three teams are playing excellent and the coach is excited for the rest of the season. The varsity team is filled with players that are committed to making this season a memorable one. The preparation that the team is dedicated has clearly shown in the matches.  Come out and support the girls as they take on Ocean View at home today (12/8) at 3:15.  Good luck girls!

Girls Water Polo:

Although the varsity girls are 0-2 right now losing to Ocean View last week and Laguna Hills earlier this week, they are working hard building their strength and gaining experience with great attitudes at practice and games. This Friday and Saturday both JV and Varsity have games at Irvine H.S. during the El Nino/La Nina tournaments. Next week the Uni water polo girls host Garden Grove on Tuesday and Long Beach Poly on Thursday, varsity game starts usually around 4pm.

Wrestling:

Boys Wrestling:  The boys kicked of their season with a 3-2 showing and 3rd place in the consolation bracket of the CDM Duals, which featured 6 teams ranked in CIF or were returning CIF champs. After going 1-2 in pool play losing to Aliso Niguel and Newport Harbor by only 4, we went into consolation bracket and went 2-0 with convincing wins over Segerstrom and Costa Mesa. Based on criteria we ended up third in the bracket.

170lb – Jordan Elam went 3-0

113lb – Ethan Maniss went 3-1

152lb – Kohl Hertz went 2-0

All wrestlers in the lineup picked up valuable points for the team, great all around effort.

Girls Wrestling:  Lorena Egea was featured with a brief write up in OC Varsity’s preview as one of the county’s top 5 girl wrestlers.

She backed that claim up by winning the Lady Sents tournament at Magnolia High School in Anaheim. She went 4-0 in the tournament and all pins coming in the first period. She wrestled less than a period combined. Also finished the tournament as MVP.

OCVarsity’s list of the top five girls wrestlers to watch in the 2016-17 season:

Lorena Egea, University: Egea finished fifth at regionals and CIF championships last year. Egea also went 1-2 at the state tournament at 131 pounds.

Karamia Guzman, Cypress: Guzman (137) finished top 12 at the state tournament last year. She also posted fourth- and fifth-place finishes at the regionals and CIF championships.

Amara Devericks, San Clemente: The sophomore, who wrestles at 189 pounds, will be looking to improve on a freshman year that saw her finish third at regionals, seventh at CIF and top 12 at the state tournament.

Gwen McDonald, Esperanza: Last year, McDonald (116) finished first at the regionals and seventh at CIF. She went 0-2 at state. Look for her to make a big jump this season.
