Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing
The UNI baseball team had a big week playing 4 games the past week. Last Thursday our boys won in dramatic fashion, with a 6-5 walk-off victory over Whittier. The Trojans were down 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning when David Schlomovits singles to left driving in two runs. UNI took an early lead in the 2nd when Nick Wetzel tripled driving in Jacob Collins who singled to lead off the inning. The Trojans pounded out 10 hits. Kahi Rodrigues, David Schlomovits, Nick Wetzel, and Jacob Collins all had multi-hit games.
On Saturday, our UNI Trojans defeated Los Amigos 12-0 as three pitchers combined to throw a 4-hit shutout. Andie Masotto led the Trojans to victory by driving in four runs. He went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored 3 runs. UNI exploded and scored four runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Nick Wetzel and John Rizzo also had multi hit efforts. David Schlomovits earned the win throwing 5 innings giving up 3 hits and striking out 7. Tyler Lu and Farbod Markazi each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
UNI and Fullerton played a tight game on Monday until Fullerton pulled away with a big 6th inning. Steven Baran tossed five and a third innings giving up only two runs. UNI took a 3-2 lead into the 6th when Fullerton struck for 10 runs. The Trojans left 9 men on base on the day.
Yesterday our boys defeated Brea Olinda 6-2 thanks to a strong start. The Trojans plated three in the first on an error and a double by Kahi Rodrigues. Jacob Collins earned the win for UNI throwing 6 strong innings allowing only 4 hits and one earned run. Tyler Lu came in to throw a scoreless 7th inning. Jacob Collins also led the Trojans with two hits and two runs scored. David Schlomovits and John Rizzo each drove in a run and Kahi Rodrigues had two RBI.
The baseball team went 3-1 on the week and moves their overall record to 4-2. Tomorrow (3/10) our boys travel to Glenn HS for a 3:00 game.
The Girls Softball team had an amazing game on Tuesday! The girls lost in the 7th unfortunately but were up every inning before that!
The girls were making diving plays, Alexis throwing out people from her knees at short. Outfielders making amazing catches! Hits everywhere, they were stealing bases and so so happy.
Final was 16-8. The score doesn’t reflect the outcome and their Coach couldn’t be more proud of the girls! They were up 8-6 top of 7!
These girls are ready to rock!! The girls play next Tuesday (3/14) at Costa Mesa High School at 3:15. Good luck girls!
The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team picked up a solid win over Murrieta Valley High School Wednesday (3/8). UNI came out on fire, scoring the first two goals before the nighthawks tallied their first. Both teams played very spirited, but the Trojans were able to maintain their poise and controlled the game from start to finish, final score 10-7.
The Uni girls swim team has started its season with a busy schedule of meets. Last week they held a Blue vs White Intra-squad meet at the Uni pool, where freshman Kate Weiland made the first individual CIF consideration time of this young season with a time of 1:10.43 in the 100 y breaststroke. Both 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay teams also made CIF consideration times.
Last Friday they participated in the annual Irvine City Relay Championships against Irvine High, Northwood, and Beckman. The Uni girls came in 2nd overall, and the Uni teams were first in combined boys and girls scoring in this all relay meet. The 200 yard Medley Relay team of Alondra Ortiz, Kate Weiland, Claire Jang and Vanessa Yang lowered the team’s CIF consideration time to 1:56.31. Claire Jang swam to individual CIF consideration times in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly as the leadoff swimmer on the 6 x 50y freestyle relay and the 4 x 100 yard butterfly relay, respectively. Freshman Kate Weiland lowered her prior CIF consideration time in the 100 breaststroke to 1:09.35 as the lead swimmer on the 4×100 Breaststroke relay.
Yesterday the swim team hosted Laguna Hills High School, and won all divisions, with the Varsity Girls winning by a score of 107-62. Uni won two of the three relays, lowering their CIF consideration times in both. The 200 Medley relay team of Alondra Ortiz, Kate Weiland, Claire Jang and Anne Jang lowered the team’s CIF consideration time by 2 seconds to 1:45.37, and the 200 freestyle relay team of the Jang sisters, Weiland and Vanessa Yang dropped the best time by 1.3 seconds. Freshman Savanna Cruz placed second in both distance freestyle events, the 200 and 500 with best times of any Uni girl this season. Junior Alison Huxman had a 7.5 second drop in her 500 free. Senior Anne Jang posted the fastest Uni time in this season in the 100 free with a 56.81. The team travels on today (3/9) to Capistrano Valley High school for the preliminary session of the annual Capo Valley relay meet against most of the fastest high schools in mid and south Orange County. The relays that advance to finals will swim again on Saturday afternoon at the same venue.

The Girls Lacrosse team participated in the Rose Bowl tournament for the second year. Placed in the highest division, the girls had a remarkable showing. They dropped their first two games to Agoura and Oak Park by one and two goals respectively before defeating El Dorado to round out the day. The girls played well and were matched against teams ranked much higher than Uni (Oak Park wen to the CIF finals last year). Sophomore Goalie Grace Caceros had a remarkable day making a whole lot of saves. The girls then played Esperanza on Tuesday dropping that game 11-6. Anneke Gustafson (Sr.) led Uni’s attack netting 3 goals. The girls are ready to rediscover their winning ways when they face Yorba Linda tonight in what promises to be an exciting match.
