Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

The Trojan Baseball team played in the Newport Elks tournament the past two weeks and finished with a record of 3-2 in the tournament. This takes their overall season record to 4-3.  There have been no games this week as our boys have been practicing hard for their league opener that will take place on Friday at Ryan Lemmon stadium v Woodbridge. Game time is 3:30. Good Luck Baseball!

First win in the bag!  The ladies defeated Costa Mesa on Tuesday (3/14).   They were a hitting machine!   The girls had some give and take but started strong with a 5 run 1st inning!  Our freshman catcher is AMAZING!!!  We had one HR and a few warning track teasers!  Did some great things and ended with the “W”!  I think that they love the taste of it!

Boys Lacrosse:

Boys Lacrosse will play at home tomorrow (3/17) against Valencia High School. The game starts at 6:00 PM in the Uni Stadium.  Come out and support!

Girls Swimming:

The swim team participated in the fast Capistrano Valley HS Relay Invitational last week, with girl’s prelims on Thursday and combined finals on Saturday afternoon. This meet included most of the top teams in Orange County and many meet records were broken. The Uni girls qualified for finals in 7 out of 7 possible relays in both the Frosh/ Soph and Varsity divisions, with the Varsity showing significant time improvements between prelims and finals in every single relay.  The 200 medley relay team of junior Alondra Ortiz (backstroke), freshman Kate Weiland (breaststroke), junior Claire Jang (butterfly) and her sister, senior co-captain Anne Jang (freestyle anchor) lowered their CIF consideration time again, this time posting a 1:54.35.   Anne Jang also lowered her CIF consideration time in the 50 free to 25.51 as the leadoff swimmer on the 6 x 50 freestyle relay.  Uni Varsity girls finished 10th out of 19 invited high schools which included 3 out of the top 5 finishing CIF teams from 2016.

Today (3/16) the team travels to Santa Margarita HS for their dual meet against the two time, back to back defending CIF Division 1 Champions. It is a fast pool and with the excellent competition and fast swims with some nice time drops are expected.  Good luck swimmers!

Boys Swimming:

The Uni boys varsity swim team had an incredible week! At the Capo Valley relay meet this past weekend, our team placed first overall in a field that included 9 out of 10 of Orange County’s top 10 teams. This was truly a team win, as the victory was achieved without placing first in any relay. The team will look to continue this momentum into today’s dual meet against top-ranked Santa Margarita.

Track & Field:

UNI Girls Track had a great win against Godinez last week with a blowout score of 95-31. We finished first in almost every event, and went 1-2-3 in the 100m (Leyna Wood, Lauryn Wood, Rovinya Ruhunage), 800m (Paige Metayer, Sara Sussman, Cecilia Langlois), 200m (Rovinya Ruhunage, Lauryn Wood, Daria Shkel), Long Jump (Alexis Robertson, Emma Goolsby, Leyna Wood) and Triple Jump (Leyna Wood, Emma Goolsby, Alyssa Stapinski). There were also wins in the 1600 (Cecilia Langlois), 100m hurdles (Daria Shkel) , 400m (Paige Metayer), 3200 (Avery Klauke), and high jump (Alexis Robertson). In addition, we took home wins in both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. We also had a group compete at the Irvine Asics Invitational this past weekend. Cecilia Langlois ran an impressive 5:24 in the 1600m, placing 10th in a competitive varsity heat. Alexis Robertson also jumped 15’10 in the long jump. Our first league meet is at Uni next Thursday 3/23 against Woodbridge. Come out and support, GO UNI TRACK!

Uni Boys also had a great outing against Godinez with a win. Final score 69 to 58. Some of our outstanding performances in the distance came from Zach Dignan, Lee McEligot, Ayush Nair. For sprints our top performers included Harry Baker, Faris Qaisi, Darius Outland, Jeremy Koo. In the hurdles, Morias Burge, Charles Feurborn, Michael Wu and Luke Ruan. For the field events, Harry Baker, Aaron Huang, Kevin Yahampath and Nick Loveland earned points for the team. This last weekend, the team also competed at the Irvine Invitational. Our top performer was Harry Baker with a 1st overall in the 100, 2nd overall in the 200, 4th overall with his team mates in the 4 x 100 (Faris Qaisi, Jeremy Koo and Darius Outland). This week the team will be up against Huntington Beach High School. Go Trojan Track!

Boys Tennis:

The boys tennis team moved to 5 and 2 on the season defeating Fountain Valley 17 to 1 in a non-league match on Tuesday (3/14).  Freshmen Cameron Sepahi swept at third singles to lead the Trojans.  Captain Hans Hwang and Michael Rudin won their two sets playing first doubles.  The boys are currently the third ranked team in CIF Southern California and will be back in action on Thursday at San Clemente.

Boys Volleyball:

Boys Volleyball starts league play next Friday (3/24) with a home game against Beckman. Lower levels play at 4:00 and Varsity follows at 5:15. Come out and support!
