A big Congratulations to our Girls Basketball Coach, Nicole Bradshaw and our Boys and Girls Soccer coaches, Martin Carrington and Nacho Cid.  All three coaches have been selected to coach this year’s Orange County All Star Games for Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer and Girls Soccer.  This is a huge accomplishment for these coaches.  Way to go!

Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

Baseball:

The Trojans opened up league play last Friday as they defeated Woodbridge by a final of 9-1 on St. Patrick’s Day thanks to an outstanding day by starting pitcher Jacob Collins. Jacob pitched a complete game giving up only 4 hits and 0 earned runs to record the win. Jacob struck out 11 Warriors and walked 0. The Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Kahi Rodrigues led off the inning with a single. He was advanced to third on Steven Reas single and plated by Jake Rome. The Trojans secured the victory thanks to six runs in the sixth inning. Andie Masotto, Jacob Collins, Kahi Rodrigues, and Steven Rea all had RBI hits in the 6th inning. On the day, the Trojans collected 13 hits. Kahi Rodrigues, Jacob Collins, Steven Rea, David Schlomovits, and Andie Masotto all collected multiple hits for UNI. Collins and Rodrigues had three hits each.

On Tuesday our boys squared off with Beckman. Beckman is ranked #3 in orange County. Beckman got off to an early lead and never looked back. Our boy fell by a final of 8-0. Andie Masotto, David Schlomovits, and Steven Rea supplied the hits for the Trojans. Our boys are back on the road tomorrow afternoon as they travel to CDM for a 3:30 start. Good Luck Baseball!

Softball:

The varsity girls competed in the Katella Softball tournament last weekend. They played two games, the first was a loss to Segerstrom, 11-8, the game was called for time. The girls then defeated Western with a score of 18-10! Great job girls! The girls have away games today (3/23) at Fountain Valley High School. Both JV and VR play at 3:15. Good luck girls!

Boys Lacrosse:

The University boys lacrosse team has a record off five and two with the Pacific Coast League games beginning this week. The team is captained by seniors Omar Salah, Isaiah Bonnafoux, Jeffrey Ly and junior Nick Khamseh. With 10 games to go, come root on your Trojans. www.unilacrosse.com

Girls Swimming:

The Uni girls swim team had two challenging meets this past week against the two time defending CIF-SS champions, Santa Margarita HS last Thursday and the 2016 CIF-SS 2016 runner up, Woodbridge, yesterday.

Although the champions prevailed, both meets produced some fast times for Uni. At Santa Margarita, juniors Clarie Jang and Alondra Ortiz each had significant time drops in their specialty events, with Jang dipping under a minute in the 100 fly (59.92) making a CIF consideration cut, and Ortiz lowering her prior CIF consideration time in the 100 back to 1:01.28.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Senior Anne Jang, freshmen Leila Mirsafian and Kate Weiland and sophomore C. Jang, lowered their CIF consideration time by over a second (1:44.14).  Anne Jang was only .06 off the CIF consideration cut in the 50 free (25.36). Several other varsity swimmers had big time drops with sophomores Marian Lu and Angela Yan dropping 5 seconds and 2.6 seconds respectively in 200 IM, and freshman Savanna Cruz and junior Alison Huxman dropping 2.5 and 4.4 seconds respectively in the 500 freestyle.  Senior Erika Ervoes dropped 2 seconds in the 100 fly.

Yesterday, in their first league meet, against defending PCL champions (and runner up CIF-SS champions) Woodbridge, more than 15 season best times were achieved by the varsity girls. Senior co-captain Anne Jang dropped 3 seconds in the 100 breaststroke to make her CIF consideration cut in that event. Alondra Ortiz made her CIF consideration cut in the 100 fly (1:00.98) and lowered her cut time in the 100 back.  Junior Claire Jang had a 2 second drop in her 100 free (55.80) just missing the CIF consideration cut. Other impressive time drops were Marian Lu in the 200 IM (2 more seconds), Alison Huxman in the 500 free (4 more seconds), and Angela Yan in the 500 free (3 more seconds).

The team has a non-league home meet today against Portola HS and another home league meet next Wednesday against Beckman. Come on out and support the swim team!  Good luck, girls!

University’s boys swimming team backed up its title at the Capistrano Valley Relays with another big victory Thursday.

The fourth-ranked Trojans defeated top-ranked and host Santa Margarita, 88-82, in a nonleague showdown between CIF-SS Division 1 teams.

University, which captured the Capistrano Valley Relays on Saturday, won two of the three relays against the Eagles, ranked No. 1 in The Register’s dual meet poll.

The Trojans clinched the upset by touching first in the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3 minutes, 10.56 seconds. The team of Andrew Knoell (45.81 seconds leadoff), George HorvathAidan Yong and sophomore anchor Aaron Lee outdistanced Santa Margarita’s top team by just over a second to snap a 78-78 tie.

“That was insane,” University second-year coach Ryan Vande Wydeven said of the victory. “We’re really starting to roll right now. … Santa Margarita, they’re really tough.”

University won the meet-opening 200 medley in 1:37.42 and also touched third in the race. In the medley and 400 free relays, the Trojans outscored the Eagles, 20-8.

“I knew we had to win the medley and knew we had to win the 400,” Vande Wydeven said. Knoell won the 100 free (46.22) and 100 backstroke (51.38) while Lee took the 50 free (22.16) and 100 butterfly (51.52).

Vande Wydeven praised his breaststroke duo of Yong (59.77) and David Lowengrub (1:00.76), who finished second and third behind Alexander Qu of Santa Margarita (59.19). Yong posted a lifetime-best time.

Santa Margarita’s Noah Brune out-dueled Horvath in the 500 free by clocking a 4:37.53.
