What’s Happening on Campus

A big Congratulations to our Girls Basketball Coach, Nicole Bradshaw and our Boys and Girls Soccer coaches, Martin Carrington and Nacho Cid.  All three coaches have been selected to coach this year’s Orange County All Star Games for Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer and Girls Soccer.  This is a huge accomplishment for these coaches.  Way to go!

Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

Last Friday our baseball team fell to CDM in a back and forth affair. UNI had their opportunities but it was CDM that prevailed 5-4. Jacob Collins threw a great game for the Trojans. He struck out 6 and walked none. Kahi Rodrigues and Jake Rome each collected multiple hits for the Trojans. Andie Masotto and Rodrigues each drove in two runs.

On Tuesday we traveled to Northwood for a game with the T Wolves.  The Trojans watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 6-2 loss to Northwood. Our boys lost despite out hitting Northwood 9-6. Kahi Rodrigues, Andie Masotto, and Jacob Collins all collected multiple hit games for the Trojans. With the loss the overall record goes to 5-6 on the year and 1-3 in League Play. Our boys are back home for a matchup with Irvine this afternoon.

Come out and support the girls today, 3/30 as they take on Schurr High School on the Uni Softball Fields. Both JV and VR play at 4:00 p.m. Good luck girls!

Boys Lacrosse:

The University Boy’s Lacrosse team played Woodbridge in the GOW and played well.

It was a hard fought game from the beginning with Uni scoring first and keeping WHS scoreless for almost the entire first quarter. Uni was more physical and dominated the face offs and ground balls all game. Uni out shot WHS 2-1, but the WHS goalie was on fire and saved the day for the warriors making save after save.

It was a great game for the Trojans and fun to watch, we hope everyone enjoyed the game.

Girls Swimming:

The Uni swim teams had two meets this past week. Last Thursday, Uni hosted Portola HS, with Uni winning all divisions by large margins in a non league meet against the newest high school in Irvine, which only has a freshman class.  Most of the swimmers had the opportunity to swim events that they haven’t raced in yet this year, giving them a chance to show their versatility.

Yesterday, the Uni swimmers had their second league meet hosting Beckman HS at the Uni pool.  The Varsity, JV and Open girls all again won their divisions by large margins. The varsity girls won 2 out of the 3 relays, getting touched out in the third by only 0.07 seconds, and  5 out of 8 individual events.   Anne Jang, Kate Weiland and Leila Mirsafian went 1,2,3 in the 100 free, Jang and Vanessa Yang went 1,2 in the 50 free,  Alondra Ortiz and Savanna Cruz went 1,2 in the 500 free and Kate Weiland and  Yuuri Yoshikawa went 1,2 in the 100 breaststroke.  Senior co-captain Anne Jang posted a CIF consideration time in the 100 back with a 1:01.46.  The 400 free relay team of Claire Jang, Weiland, Ortiz and A. Jang dropped 3.86 seconds off the team’s best CIF consideration time, finishing in 3:53.01.

The girls will be training hard over spring break, and then open the second half of the season on 4/12 against cross-town rival Northwood HS. Good luck, girls!

Boys Swimming:

The #1 ranked Uni boys swim team continued their undefeated season this week with dominant wins over Woodbridge and Beckman. Freshman Brian Lou shined in both meets placing 1st in the 200 IM with CIF qualifying times. Senior Andrew Knoell has continued to impress in all events after being named Swimmer of the Week by OC Varsity.

Track & Field:

We had our first league meet last week against Woodbridge. Our Varsity girls had some great performances, despite losing to a tough Woodbridge team. Paige Metayer was a top performer for us, placing 1st in the 400m and 800m with impressive times of 56.17 and 2:17 respectfully. Metayer was also second in the Triple Jump. Ceci Langlois won the 3200m and was second in the 1600m. More notable performances came from Daria Shkel, Leyna Wood, Melissa Finn, Noelle Lee, and Harini Venkataganesh. Our next league meet is at home on 3/30 against Beckman. Come out and support, GO UNI TRACK!

The boys also opened up with their first league meet against Woodbridge. It was a tough loss but one of best performances against Woodbridge since they joined the league. (Woodbridge 95 an Uni 52). Some of our top performers included Aaron Huang in the long jump, Charlie Feurborn in the 110HH, Harry Baker and Faris Qaisi in the 100, Harry Baker and Chris Vonn in the 200, Kevin Yahampath, Darius Outland and Evan Pariser in the High Jump, Raja Batra and Zach Dignan in the 3200, Kyle Mumm and Josh Lambert in the Discus. On Saturday at the Beach Cities Invitational, the boys 4 x 100  (Darius Outland, Faris Qaisi, Jeremy Koo, Harry Baker) improved their time and chance for an entry into the Arcadia Invitational. This week, we will be up against Beckman here at home. Go Trojan Track and Field!

Boys Tennis:

In boys tennis action, Junior Julian LaFond swept at singles and senior Hans Hwang and junior Patryk Kozlowski won their two sets at first doubles to lead the Trojan boys to a 14-4 victory over CDM.  The victory marked the 100th straight league win for the team.  In arguably the toughest boys tennis league in the nation, the boys have not lost a league match since April 2006.  Congratulations to all of those boys throughout the years to make this happen. One of the premier programs in Orange County added yet another monumental accomplishment to its already impressive resume as University’s boys tennis team won its 100th consecutive Pacific Coast League match against No. 3 Corona del Mar, 14-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Corona del Mar High.

Trojans junior Julian Lafond swept from his No. 2 spot in the singles lineup, while Patryk Kozlowski and Hans Hwang went 2-0 atop the doubles rotation. University led 5-1 after the first round and were up 9-3 headed into the third.

In what’s the best tennis league in Orange County – and one of the best in the nation – University has won the Pacific Coast League title 11 years in a row, and will be favored to capture a 12th straight crown this year as they are ranked atop the county poll and are now 8-2 on the season.

All six Pacific Coast League teams are currently ranked in the county top-10 poll. The Sunset League is the only other league with multiple teams represented in Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley.

The Trojans last league loss came all the way back in April of 2006.

Boys Volleyball:

Tuesday against Woodbridge the boys varsity volleyball team lost a tough league match in 4 sets. The Trojans took set one in dominating fashion but couldn’t sustain their level of play and lost the next three by a narrow margin. University was lead by the hitting of Aiden Wolf’neilsen with 12 kills, Alhasan Hussein with 10 kills and Jack Wirth with 9 kills. Christian Beltran orchestrated an offense in which he assisted on 31 kills.

Thursday the boys volleyball team will be traveling to CDM where they’ll face off with the Sea Kings for the first time this season. Jv and frosh/Soph start at 4pm, varsity will follow around 5:30pm. Come out to support your Trojans in this league match!!!
