A big Congratulations to our Girls Basketball Coach, Nicole Bradshaw and our Boys and Girls Soccer coaches, Martin Carrington and Nacho Cid. All three coaches have been selected to coach this year’s Orange County All Star Games for Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer and Girls Soccer. This is a huge accomplishment for these coaches. Way to go!
Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing
Our Trojan Baseball team played an exciting game on Tuesday v Northwood. Our boys got out to an early 1-0 lead as Andie Masotto led off with a hit and stole second base. Nick Wetzel drove him in. Northwood responded and tied the score at 1 in the third inning. Both teams had several opportunities to score in the middle innings but the score remained 1-1 until the 6th inning. In the 6th Northwood scored 3 times to push the score to 4-1. David Schlomovits pitched 6 very strong innings for the Trojans but in the end we could not push enough runs across. The final score was 4-1. Our boys will battle it out with Northwood again on Friday at 3:30. This game will be played at Northwood. Good Luck Baseball!
Come out and support the Uni Girls Softball team today (4/13) for their league game against Northwood. Both Varsity and JV play at 3:30 on the Softball Fields. On Monday, April 17th, come out for the girls GOW!!! They will be playing Beckman at 3:30 on the Uni Softball Fields. Hope to see you there!
The University Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team is currently in 3rd place in the Pacific Coast League and had a great week of lacrosse.
On Monday they played Irvine HS under the lights at IHS. It was a dominant performance from start to finish for the Trojans winning 13-2. Senior captain Isaiah Bonnafoux won 90% of his face offs and tallied 7 goals and 1 assist. Junior captain Nick Khamseh had a record night with 3 goals and 10 assists. Rustin Sorat played amazing in the goal.
On Wednesday Uni played at #2 Northwood. It was a better contest, but Uni had too many unforced errors that NHS capitalized on and eventually won the game. Uni’s defense started slow, the offense started too fast and team chemistry was at a low. This added up to a 17-7 defeat.
University lacrosse has definitely improved and this year’s team has been a pleasure to coach.
The Uni swim team returned after break for a tough GOW meet against cross town rival Northwood and came up short, the Varsity girls losing 95 to 75, although both the JV and open girls won their divisions. A few bright spots in the meet were the Varsity 200 Medley relay (Alondra Ortiz, Kate Weiland, Claire Jang, Anne Jang) and the 200 Free relay (A.Jang, Leila Mirsafian, Vanessa Yang, C.Jang) turning in season best times, with the free relay taking first place. Senior captain Anne Jang was a double individual event winner in the 50 free and the 100 backstroke, with a season best CIF consideration time in the backstroke. She and Ortiz went 1-2 in that event; Claire Jang and Ortiz went 1-2 in the 100 fly.
Next week will be busy with a dual meet away at Corona del Mar on Wednesday, and the always competitive Foothill Swim Games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Good luck girls!
The boys travel to Corona Del Mar next Wednesday (4/19) for a league meet. The boys will also be competing in the Foothill Games on Thursday and Saturday. Good luck boys!
Track & Field:
UNI Track competed at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational on Saturday, April 8th. This is the first time we have ever had sprinters qualify for this meet. Senior Harry Baker broke the school record in the 200m running an impressive 22.27! Here is a picture of our 4x100m relay team who also raced today: Darius Outland, Harry Baker, Faris Qaisi, and Jeremy Koo. Please congratulate Harry and these boys on this awesome accomplishment. Go Uni Track and Field!
Today, Thursday, April 13th the track team will be taking on Northwood at the Uni Stadium, come out and support!
The boys varsity tennis team defeated Irvine high 16 to 2 in their first match after Spring Break. The boys are now 11-2 overall and 5-0 in PCL play. Currently the Trojans are the #1 ranked team in Orange County and #3 in the CIF Southern Section. The boys will be back in action on Thursday (4/13) at Northwood.
This past Tuesday the Trojan Boys Volleyball Team played Northwood in a league match at home. The varsity and frosh/Soph teams both were victorious in what was a exciting matchup. Frosh/soph won the match in 3 sets, while varsity won in 4. The varsity team came out swinging and recorded a total of 65 kills on the match with huge contributions from Alhasan Hussein (21 kills and 7 blocks), Aiden Wolf-Neilson (15 kills), Nick Lui (10 kills) and Jack Wirth (9 kills and 4 blocks). The offense was conducted by setter Christian Beltran who racked up a team high 56 assists along with 18 digs.
Friday, April 14th your Trojan Boys Volleyball team is host to inner league rival Irvine High. Jv and Frosh/Soph start play at 4pm, Varsity will play following the Jv match on center court (roughly 5:30pm). The Boys volleyball team needs you and your school spirit as we are seeking back to back league wins!! GO TROJANS!!
Girls Lacrosse has had an amazing season thus far. Sitting in 3rd place in league, the Lady Trojans have defeated Northwood, Woodbridge, and Irvine, dropping matches only to league powerhouses CDM and Beckman. Both of those losses were only by three goals, which is remarkable for the program. Fresh off a 21-3 victory yesterday, 4/12, over Northwood, the Girls are looking forward to their Senior Game this Friday (4/14) against Sage Hill in the stadium, so come out and support the team, especially the Seniors, and watch some amazing lacrosse.
Some fun facts about this year: Senior Ashlyn Wang is currently #2 in league for goals scored with an impressive 50 goals in only 8 games! This also puts Ms. Wang in the top 50 nationwide for goals scored. Senior Raeann Artim is also one of the top scorers with 21 goals so far. To put this in perspective, the national average for goals scored is only 8. Other top goal scorers include Senior Honia Mohtashami (16), Senior Anneke Gustafson (12), Senior Amanda Shubin (11), and Junior Ashley Chandler (11). Senior Amanda Shubin and Junior Ashley Chandler lead the team in ground ball control, scooping up 18 and 23 loose balls respectively. Senior Phoebe Solomon and Junior Kaylor Chott are keeping the pressure on with groundballs as well, recovering 11 each. Last and definitely not least, Sophomore Goalie (and first year Varsity player) Grace Caceros is above the national average in save percentage, which is a key factor in the success of the team. This is a fantastic season for Girls Lacrosse and it is quickly coming to a close, so take the time to come out and watch a match!
The boys will be competing against Portola High School today, Thursday (4/13) at Strawberry Farms. On Tuesday (4/18) the boys will be traveling to Tustin Ranch Golf Course for their match against Beckman High School. Good luck boys!
