Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

The Trojans ran into a hot Beckman team last Friday and lost by a final of 10-0. Early in the game our boys had several chances to score as we left 6 men on base through the first 4 innings. Beckman had a big 4th inning to put the game away.

On Tuesday Corona Del mar came to UNI and our boys put up a good fight v the first place team in league. Our boys tied the game at 1 in the first but were not able to push any more runs across and CDM pulled away for a 5-1 victory. Our boys will travel to CDM for the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 game. Good Luck Boys!

Uni Softball will be competing against Corona Del Mar today (5/4) at Home. The game begins at 3:30 p.m. Come out and support!

Boys Lacrosse:

Boys Lacrosse had a great season! The team did very well this year finishing 10-10.  I’m very proud of this bunch. We return 7 starters and only lose 3 seniors, with depth being young and building the future is looking good.

Girls Swimming:

The girls swim team is competing in the Pacific Coast League Championship meet this week. Prelims for Varsity and JV and Championship Finals for the Open division took place Tuesday at the Beckman HS pool.  The Open girls finished 2nd overall to Irvine HS in their division.   The top 16 JV and Varsity swimmers in each event will compete again in finals this Friday.  Uni goes into finals with 18 individual Varsity top 16 qualifying swims, and 30 in the JV division.   Senior Captain Anne Jang, Juniors Claire Jang and Alondra Ortiz, and Freshman Kate Weiland each qualified in the top 8 in all their events.   Freshman Savanna Cruz had the biggest time improvements of all the Varsity Girls, dropping 4.17 seconds in the 200 free and 6.1 seconds in the 500 free. Both she and Alison Huxman will be returning to swim those events again on Friday.  Weiland, Marian Lu and Yuuri Yoshikawa all had time drops in the 200 IM and made finals.  In the 50 free, Anne Jang, Anne Iwata and Vanessa Yang will be returning for finals.  Iwata will be returning in the 100 free as well.  Claire Jang and Alondra Ortiz will be returning in the 100 fly; senior Erika Ervoes dropped a full second in her 100 fly for a season best time.   Ortiz and Lu will swim the 100 back in finals, and Weiland, A. Jang and Yoshikawa will compete again in the 100 breaststroke at finals.  All relays will be contested on Friday.   Friday will also be the swimmers last chance to make CIF cuts in preparation for the CIF-SS Division I prelims and finals next week.  Good Luck Girls!

Boys Swimming:

Come out and support the boys tomorrow, May 5th as they compete in the Pacific Coast League Swimming Finals at Beckman High School. Good luck boys!

Track & Field:

On Tuesday, Track participated in League prelims here at Uni. We had a lot of personal best and a lot of athletes moving on to Friday for League Finals. Come out and support. Go Trojan Track and Field!

Boys Tennis:

The boys tennis team finished the regular season on Monday with an 11 to 7 victory over Woodbridge.  Uni won all 9 point in doubles with Michael Rudin and Kai Soto-Dessen leading the way playing third doubles and Hans Hwang and Soomin Lee winning all three of their sets at first doubles.  Patryk Kozlowski won a critical set at first singles to also lead the Trojans.  The boys won their 12th straight Pacific Coast League title finishing with a record of 10 and 0.  Uni has now also won 108 straight Pacific Coast League matches dating back to 2006!  The PCL individual tournament will take place this week with team playoffs starting next week.

Boys Volleyball:

Last Thursday the Boys Volleyball team was victorious against league rival Irvine. The varsity team won in 5 sets while being led by Alhasan Hussein and Aiden Wolfnielson who each had 23 kills, Jack Wirth had 8 kills and Christian Beltran had 59 assists.

Tuesday the Trojan boys remained focused as they beat Woodbridge in 4 sets at home on Senior Night to clinch a playoff spot. Boys Volleyball will likely be traveling to play in round one of the playoffs. The details have not yet been released but stay tuned for more information. We Hope to see you come and support Boys Volleyball in the playoffs!! GO Trojans!!!

Girls Lacrosse:

The Lady Trojans Lacrosse team ended league play with a solid win over Woodbridge, 12-2.  More impressive was the fact that eight girls contributed to the goal tally: Sr. Honia Mohtashami, Sr. Raeann Artim, and Jr. Ashley Chandler all netter twice, while Sr. Megan Lee, Sr. Dena Parsa, Sr. Ashlyn Wang, and Sr. Anneke Gustafson all added one each.  Ashlyn Wang ended up second in league for number of goals scored, with an impressive 67 goals over 14 games, for an average of 5 goals per game.  All of that makes it sound like Woodbridge wasn’t much of a threat, but in addition to having to find their way through a stifling defense, So. Grace Caceros had 8 saves in goal, which contributed to the woes of Woodbridge.  The win secured a third place finish in league with an overall record of 6-4.

It also propelled the team, for the first time in the history of the program, to the CIF post-season tournament.  On Tuesday, May 2, the team played Mater Dei and lost, 19-5.  Despite the scoreline, it was a phenomenal match against the best team in Orange County and, as a consolation, the team scored more goals against Mater Dei than CdM did when they played earlier in the season!

This year, the team bids a sad farwell to fifteen (yes, fifteen!) Seniors, all of whom have been an integral part of the program for the last four years.  They will be missed and the remaining players are already strategizing about next season.  Thank you to everyone who came out to support!

Boys Golf:

Next up will be 1st round of Individual CIF at SkyLinks Golf Course in Long Beach on Monday 5/8/17.

Representing University will be our very own sophomore Connor O’Brien! He shot 1 under par 71 Tuesday to qualify for individual CIF! He shot 3 over par 147 for 2 days 36 holes. That is good for a tie of 3rd place in Pacific Coast League. That is an impressive feat in PCL, arguably the strongest league in Southern California.

Let’s all wish him luck!

Please congratulate him if you see him on campus.
