Spring Sports

Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing

Baseball:

Last Thursday’s game against Irvine was a heartbreaker for the UNI baseball team as they lost the lead late in a 2-0 defeat. The game was tied at zero with Irvine batting in the top of the sixth when Irvine homered driving in two runs. The pitching was strong on both sides. David Schlomovits pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs, striking out seven, walking zero, and only allowed five hits. The Trojans left several men on base throughout the game. Despite several chances, they were not able to push across any runs. A special congratulations to Peter Vu, Ben Hansen, and Farbod Markazi for playing in their final game as outgoing seniors.

Girls Swimming:

The CIF SS Div 1 Championship meet was held last week at Riverside Community College.

Preliminaries were Thursday with the top 18 in each event returning for finals on Saturday.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Alondra Ortiz, Kate Weiland, Claire Jang and Anne Jang qualified for finals, with Anne Iwata substituting for Anne Jang in Saturday’s finals, finishing in 18th place.

In the individual events, Alondra Ortiz had a lifetime best of 58.95 in the 100 butterfly finishing 25th overall, and also swam the 100 backstroke, finishing 27th. Anne Jang finished 27th in the 50 free. Kate Weiland finished 30th in the 100 breaststroke, and Claire Jang finished 33rd in the 100 free.

The 200 Freestyle relay team of A. Jang, Leila Mirsafian, Iwata and C. Jang finished 22nd and the 400 Freestyle relay team of Ortiz, Weiland, Mirsafian, and Iwata finished in 30th place.

Freshman diver Tamar Aizik finished in 23rd place.

This concludes the 2017 Swimming and Diving season.

Good-bye, good luck, and thank you to our graduating senior swimmers: Chandlyr Denaro, Erika Ervoes, Anne Jang,  Jacinda Kao, Annie Lee, Celine Nie, Madi Wakita, Vanessa Yang, and Diana Zhang.

Boys Swimming:

Best of luck to Aaron Lee, David Lowengrub, Brian Lou and Sidney Miller as they travel to Fresno, CA to compete in the CIF State Swimming Championships this Friday, 5/19 & Sat. 5/20.

Boys Tennis:

The boy’s tennis season came to an end on Wednesday (5/17) when the boys lost to Harvard Westlake of Studio City at the CIF Semifinals. Congratulations to the boys on what was still a very successful season.   We can’t wait to see what you bring to the table next year!

Track & Field:

Well, we had another great day at the Division 1 CIF Prelims at Trabuco Hills HS. We started the day off with our boys 4×100 team (Faris Qaisi, Darius Outland, Jeremy Koo, Harry Baker) breaking their own school record, running an impressive 42.88. They placed 9th overall for D1, which qualifies them for CIF Finals next weekend. Daria Shkel will also be moving on to finals next weekend in the 100m hurdles. She ran an amazing time of 15.21 for 6th overall, which is a new school record by over a second! Paige Metayer is still undefeated in the 800. She won her heat running 2:13 (after another soccer game) which automatically qualifies her for next week.  These six individuals will be competing in CIF Finals at Cerritos College this coming Saturday, 5/20.

It has been over 10 years since we have had anyone make it all the way to CIF Finals, and this year we have 6! We are super excited for these athletes, so if you see them tell them congrats!
