This week the team completed two league victories against Beckman and Northwood. Tuesday, the girls scored a 185 to Beckman’s 206. Dana Choi had the low round at 1-under par, 35, while team captain Samantha Cabunag shot an even par 36.  On Wednesday, Uni beat Northwood 181-212. Nodoka Honda came in with a low round, 32 (4-under par) and Dana Choi shot even 36. At this point, the Uni girl’s golf team is in second place in the PCL with a league record of 6-1.  The team has three matches to go and if they win all three they will repeat as league champions.

Cross Country

The Boys Cross Country had another awesome weekend at the Dana Hills Invitational. We had many new personal records and our standout performance came from Senior Christian Go, Senior Amir Guity, Junior Abhi Nisha Anish, Sophomore Ryan Duffy and Sophomore Raja Batra. Our next meet will be our first league meet at Mason Park which is next Thursday. Go Trojan Running!

Uni girls cross country had another great showing at the Dana Hills Invitational this past weekend. Our freshmen girls placed 4th as a team against some very tough schools. Leading our varsity group once again was Avery Klauke, running another solid time of 18:50 over 3 miles. Collette Lowengrub continues to improve every week. Collette broke 19 minutes for the first time, running 18:58 and placing 5th overall in the freshman race. Other top performances include Marta Meinardi, Sydney Field, Mackenzie Field, Vani Tankha and Roseanne Yu. Our GOW is next Thursday, October 5th at Mason Park. Races start at 3:00, come out and support! GO UNI XC!

Girls Volleyball

Girls Volleyball just finished another jam-packed weekend of volleyball, with Varsity at our home tournament and JV at Dave Mohs.  Varsity finished 2nd in pool avenging their loss to Northwood last Thursday and JV put up a strong fight against some pretty competitive teams like Mater Dei, Dana Hills and Mira Costa!  Talk about a tough pool….well played JV team!

Our weekday matches put us against CDM and the JV team fought hard on their second set albeit losing 27-25.  Nice work JV!!

This weekend will mark the last of our home tournaments. Our JV team will be competing against Costa Mesa, Beckman, Northwood, JSerra, and Laguna Hills so come out and support them!

Next week Tuesday, is our GAME OF THE WEEK against Woodbridge High School so Trojan army we need you to come out in masses to show our cross town rival that this is our house!

University finds a way past Calvary Chapel

By TIM BURT | tiburt@scng.com | Orange County Register

IRVINE – University was missing six injured starters, including junior quarterback Thomas Keeling, for Friday night’s nonleague game with Calvary Chapel at University High.

So Coach Mark Cunningham had to adjust his lineup to come up with a winning combination. The Trojans, with senior Tristan Lucas leading the way at quarterback, defeated Calvary Chapel, 43-14.

Lucas passed for 55 yards, including a 35-yard TD to Austin Lake which put the Trojans ahead, 30-7, late in the third quarter. “He’s a very good back-up quarterback,” Cunningham said of Lucas. “He did a very good job.”

Cunningham said that Keeling, who was injured in last week’s game against Pioneer, will be evaluated at the end of next week but may be able to play against Estancia on Thursday. With Keeling out, University used a run-oriented offense.

Zachary Goodfriend led the way, rushing for two touchdowns and 96 yards. Claudell Martinez rushed for 54 yards and one TD, Tristan Lucas rushed for 49 yards and Branton Lucas rushed for 45 yards and one TD.

“That was our plan (to run more) and even on the pass, we wanted him (Tristan Lucas) to, if it wasn’t there, take off because he’s a pretty good athlete.” Calvary Chapel (0-4) was led by quarterback Cole Boop, who passed for 118 yards. Noah Bustillos rushed for 88 yards for the Eagles.

University (3-0) jumped to a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Sam Kelley with 5:53 left in the first quarter then extended its lead to 9-0 on Goodfriend’s 3-yard TD run early in the second quarter. Boop scored on a quarterback keeper in the second quarter to cut University’s lead to 9-7.

But Martinez scored on a 30-yard TD run and Branton Lucas scored on a 9-yard TD run to put the Trojans ahead, 23-7, at halftime. Goodfriend and Daniel Dolan had TD runs in the fourth quarter for Uni to seal the victory. Jonathan Carnevale scored on a 10-yard TD run for Calvary Chapel late in the game to make it 43-14.

Congratulations to Coco Yang for being named the Orange County Girls Golf Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 4th!

She posted a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine at Strawberry Farms Golf Club to help the Trojans beat Irvine by 61 strokes. Her medal-winning round played a key role in the Trojans finishing 2-over-par as a team on one of the toughest courses used in high school girls golf.

Cross Country

UNI Girls cross country has had a great start to the season. At the Laguna Hills Invitational, our freshmen girls placed 2nd in their race, and our team finished 21st overall out of a total of 54 teams. At the Woodbridge Invitational, our freshmen girls also finished 3rd overall, and the large majority of our team ran their all-time personal best. Leading our team has been sophomore Avery Klauke who ran an elite time of 18:49 at the Woodbridge Invitational.  Freshman Collette Lowengrub has been a standout and is currently undefeated this season. She placed 1st in the freshman race at Laguna Hills and also won her race at the Woodbridge Invitational running an impressive 19:08. Other varsity standouts include Sydney Field, Marta Meinardi and Mackenzie Field. This weekend we compete at the Dana Hills Invitational where we look forward to more fast times! Go UNI XC!

Uni Boys Cross Country also had a great start to their season. At the Laguna Hills Invitational, our Sophomore boys finished 1st overall in their race with standout performances from Ryan Duffy, Nick Choi, Raja Batra, Adam Gish and Cole Carlson. At the Woodbridge Invitational which is now the world’s largest Cross Country invitational with over 14,000 entries our Sophomore boys finished 3rd overall and our Senior boys finished 3rd overall for their races. Our standout performances came from 5 individuals who broke the 17 minute barrier for the first time and included Christian Go, Ryan Duffy, Amir Gutiy, Raja Batra, and Ryan Liang. All five boys were within 7 seconds of each other from 16:22 to 16:30. Our next meet is this Saturday at the Dana Hills Invitational. Go Trojan Cross Country.

Girls Volleyball

We had an exciting week with both our JV and FS winning Saddleback Valley Christian in San Juan Capistrano last week and a very successful Frosh Soph tournament at home on Saturday!  Our Frosh Soph team played against some competitive teams and got better at every game! It was very exciting to see everyone improving and playing some good volleyball!  Great job Frosh Soph Team!

GVB 9.21.17

Yesterday, all three teams traveled to Tesoro and played a pretty competitive match but came up just a little bit short.  Today, Thursday, Sept 27 is our league opener against Northwood HS at NHS. 4pm JV/FS and 5:15pm Varsity.   This weekend we have some jam-packed action with JV playing at Fountain Valley HS in the annual Dave Moh’s Tournament and our Varsity hosting our own tournament here at home.  So come out to support our team across town today or at home this weekend!

Also, if you would like to pre-order corsage & boutonniere set for your Homecoming then you can do so through Uni GVB fundraiser – go to our website:  unigirlsvb.com and look for “Homecoming Flowers Order Form” and the link to order:

The senior captains swept at No. 1 doubles to help the Trojans push Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 1. Campbell Hall won on games, 81-80, after the teams were tied in sets, 9-9.

Boys Water Polo

Our team this year is focused on better defense around the pool. We have held 90% of our opponents to under 10 goals.  With very little returning players having varsity experience, our team is doing a great job.  We have great hope for our upcoming juniors and underclassmen with some very talented athletes filling the ranks. Our future is looking very promising. Go Trojan Polo!
