Irvine fends off late challenge from University to win crucial PCL game

By TIM BURT | tiburt@scng.com | Orange County Register

IRVINE – Irvine held off a comeback bid by University in the fourth quarter to capture a wild 31-30 Pacific Coast League victory Friday night at Irvine.

Irvine (5-3, 2-1) made a big defensive stop late in the game, stopping University (5-3, 1-2) on a fourth-and-one play at the Irvine 25 with 4:41 remaining.

University got the ball back again on the Trojans’ 46-yard line with 2:15 left following an interception by Jackson Muniz.

But the drive stalled and Irvine took over with 1:34  left, then celebrated the victory which helps the Vaqueros keep their CIF-SS playoff hopes alive.

Irvine led, 31-27, after three quarters but University cut the lead to 31-30 on a 22-yard field goal by Sam Kelley with 6:55 remaining.

Quarterback Marc Filia led Irvine passing for 295 yards and two TDs. Irvine’s Bryce Tanikawa hauled in four catches for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Rian Fields had three catches for 87 yards for the Vaqueros.

University was led by Daniel Dolan, who rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Dolan also hauled in a 39-yard pass from quarterback Tristan Lucas to set up one of the scores.

But Dolan came out of the game with an injury with 10:07 left and did not return.

Dolan capped a big first half when he ran from 42 yards out to put the Trojans ahead, 20-17, with 1:04 left in the first half.

But Irvine battled back.

Filia connected with Tanikawa on a 39-yard TD pass with 18 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Vaqueros a 24-20 halftime lead.

University was victimized by two turnovers in the first half, including a fumble on the opening drive after it advanced the ball to the Irvine 26 yard-line.

Irvine capitalized, moving ahead, 3-0, on a 27-yard field goal by Jacob Yi midway through the first quarter.

Austin Lake was also solid for University, rushing for 46 yards on nine carries for University.

Irvine won despite having three turnovers.

Girls Golf

The Girl’s Golf Team completed league finals last week and qualified 5 individual players for the CIF Individual Girl’s Golf Regional that was played this past Tuesday.  Three members of our team finished in the top 36 which qualifies them for the next level of CIF. Dana Choi finished in 5th place with an even par 71 at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim. Nodoka Honda and Alexis Kim also qualified with scores of 76 and 77 respectively. They move on to the Southern California Championships to be played in Oxnard next Thursday. As for the whole team, we play in the CIF Team Divisional this coming Monday at Mile Square.

Cross Country

Uni Girls cross country raced at the Riverside Invitational this past Saturday on the CIF SS Prelims/Finals course. Our Varsity girls placed 10th overall in a competitive field with some of the best in the Southern Section. Collette Lowengrub led our team once again, finishing 9th overall with a time of 18:41. Avery Klauke finished in 13th place with a time of 18:56. Rounding out our varsity team was Cecilia Langlois, Marta Meinardi, Sydney Field, Mackenzie Field and Vani Tankha. We compete at the Pacific Coast League Finals next Wednesday, November 1st at Irvine Regional Park. We are looking forward to some great performances and possibly sending multiple runners to CIF this year. Races start at 2pm, come support! GO UNI XC!

This last weekend the Boys Cross Country team competed at the Riverside Cross Country Invitational which is the site of CIF prelims and finals. At this meet we were allowed to run 12 athletes at the varsity level which was a great opportunity for our boys team to determine the varsity runners for league finals. Our #1 runner was out sick with #2 and #3 out injured but all with standing we had some great performances by Ryan Duffy, Nick Choi, Justin Soliman, Abhi Nisha Anesh, Chris Lohmyer, Raja Batra and Micheal Blinstrub. League Finals will be next week at Irvine Park.

Girls Golf

The Uni Girl’s golf team has had a busy week. On Monday, we played the first day of league finals. During this day of the tournament we were making up a match against Woodbridge that was cancelled due to the canyon fire last week. We beat Woodbridge to secure a co-championship with them for the PCL. Yesterday, 5 of our starters advanced on to the CIF first round.  There are only 9 golfers that can qualify from our league and Uni has 5. Here are the results of the Pacific Coast League Finals:

Dana Choi finished 2nd, Nodoka Honda 4th, Alexis Kim 5th, Samantha Cabunag 6th, and Coco Yang 7th. They move on to play CIF as individuals next Tuesday. The team also qualified for the CIF Team Division to be played 10/30.

Cross Country

UNI Cross Country competed at the Orange County Championship meet this past Saturday at Oak Canyon Park. We had some exciting performances in the varsity girls race. Freshman Collette Lowengrub continues to impress as she was named “All County” by finishing as the #3 fastest freshman of the entire day with a time of 18:49. Avery Klauke also had a great race, finishing 14th overall (time 19:18) in the varsity race against some tough competition. Lowengrub and Klauke both finished in the top 100 in the county, placing 31st and 72nd respectively. The rest of our varsity finishers included Marta Meinardi, Sydney Field, Vani Tankha, Roseanne Yu and Harper Klauke. This weekend we will be at the Riverside Invitational where we look forward to racing on the CIF SS championship course. GO UNI XC!

The boys Cross Country had another tough weekend at the OC Cross Country Championships. Uni’s true nature was seen with 55% of the team out for ACT and PSAT testing. Our top performance for the day came from Christian Go, Chris Lohmeyer, and Daniel Vilchis. Our next meet will be this Saturday at the Riverside Invitational. The team will be at full strength and we look forward to some more PR’s on the season. Go Trojan Cross Country

Girls Volleyball

Come out and support the girls next Monday, Oct. 23rd.  The girls will be taking on Beckman in the Uni gym for their last game of the season.  It is also their senior night. Varsity plays at 5:15 PM.  Hope to see you there!

Girls Tennis

The Uni girls varsity tennis team defeated Irvine on Tuesday.  On Wednesday the girls lost to CDM.  Sophomore Cami Brown had her best performance of the season winning two out of her three sets against some of the top girls in So Cal.  Playing on center court at the Racquet Club of Irvine, Cami capped off her impressive day with a 6-2 win over a girl who had defeated her a week earlier.  The girls are now 5-2 in the Pacific Coast league and 9-4 overall and will be on the road at Woodbridge today.

Boys Water Polo

The University Boys water polo team beat Irvine on Tuesday with a close victory of 13-12.  With it being senior day, the game had plenty of pre game distractions.  Starting the game, the Irvine High team jumped up with 2 quick unanswered goals, and it was an upward climb to catch up in the first half.  However, pulling his team from a 3 goal deficit, Co-team Captain Joe Nagy rallied in the 3rd quarter.  With help from seniors Bennett Kidder, Nelson Tello, Kyle Mumm, and freshman Matt Wallin and Stewart Campbell all adding clutch goals.  Contributing to this top performance was the defensive efforts of Bennett Kidder and Andrew Weller.  An overall effort by the entire teams efforts is what brought UNI to victory, and gave our athletes the best league record they have had in their 4 years here.

University football team takes control early and tops Northwood, 28-7, in PCL game

Brent Shaver

OC Varsity.com

The University High football team dominated early and then held on late for a 28-7 win over Northwood in a Pacific Coast League opener last Friday, Oct. 6, at Portola.

The Trojans marched right down the field for a score on their first three possessions and later led, 28-0, early in the third quarter.

But Northwood never gave in and made it a game in the second half before Uni closed out the win.

University improved its record to 5-1 overall, while Northwood fell to 1-5.

“We played very well in the first half, but got sloppy and made some mistakes in the second half,” University coach Mark Cunningham said. “We have to correct those things. You have to give credit to Northwood too. They just kept on battling back. They never quit. It was a great tribute to those kids.”

University started the game with a six-play, 58-yard drive that was capped by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Lucas to Jack Hausam.

Lucas rolled to his right and found a wide-open Hausam in the right corner of the end zone.

University then forced a three and out by the Timberwolves and went to work on offense again.

A 13-play, 53-yard drive resulted in another score. Eleven of the plays were runs behind the offensive line of Andre Le, Shawyon Ezzati, Ariyan Golbad, Parker Selbo and Sky Roberts and the Trojans converted on two short fourth down plays before scoring.

Lucas ended the drive with a five-yard touchdown run on a bootleg to help give University a 14-0 lead with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

“I was really pleased with the way that we started,” Cunningham said. “Everything was clicking.

Northwood looked like it might get back in the game on its next possession, but a long touchdown pass was called back for holding and the Timberwolves ended up having to punt.

University took advantage with another sustained drive – this one for 75 yards.

Daniel Dolan took a short pass from Lucas, sprinted to the left side of the field and dove into the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead for the Trojans.

The Trojans went up, 28-0, with 5:30 left in the third quarter on a nifty 78-yard punt return for a score by Claudell Martinez.

Martinez faked left and then went right after receiving the ball. He cut back to the middle of the field, spun out of a tackle just past midfield and then outran the rest of the Northwood coverage for the touchdown.

Northwood had its best drive of the game on its next possession, moving the ball inside the University 10-yard line, but Uni’s Josiah Henry picked off a pass by Seth Locke.

Northwood did score soon after, though.

Luke Demaio blocked a University punt deep in the Trojan end and Jake Simonian recovered the ball in the end zone to get the Timberwolves on the board with 10:18 left in the game.

That is the way the game ended. Northwood threw two more interceptions – Farbod Memarian picked off both passes – and University fumbled the ball inside the Northwood 20-yard line late.

Lucas completed 4 of 11 passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.

Zach Goodfriend had 60 yards rushing on 13 carries and, Max Haughey added 44 yards on the ground and Branton Lucas ended with 43 yards rushing. As a team, University had 215 yards rushing.

For Northwood, quarterback Trevor Littlejohn completed 9 of 20 passes for 97 yards on the night. Towne Allen had 2 catches for 21 yards and Demaio caught a pass for 37 yards.

“We got off to a rough start, but we played better as the game went on,” Northwood coach Pete Mitchell said. “University is a good ball club, but we shut them down in the second half. Our kids really fought. They never stopped fighting.”

Girls Golf

Girls golf has not had any matches since last Tuesday.  Their match on 10/10 was postponed due to the fire. League finals are coming up next week. Their final home match is today, 10/12 at 3 PM at strawberry farms.  If they win their last two matches of the season they will finish in first place in the Pacific Coast league.  Go Uni Golf!

Cross Country

Boys Cross Country had a tough league opener at Mason Park last Thursday. Our top performances on the day came from Christian Go, Ryan Duffy, Raja Batra, Amir Guity, Nick Choi, Ryan Liang and Justin Soliman. I was proud of our boys with one runner (Ryan Duffy) completing the race with a bloody nose and not giving up and another (Amir Guity) fracturing his foot in the first 400m of the race but still completed the race. This weekend we will at Irvine Lake for OC Champs. Go Trojan Running!

Girls Cross Country competed in the Pacific Coast League Cluster meet this past Thursday. We had two girls place in the top 5 in our league against some tough competition. Freshman Collette Lowengrub finished in second place in the varsity race, running an impressive time of 18:01 for 3 miles. Sophomore Avery Klauke was 5th place with a big PR of 18:26. Lowengrub is now #15 all time in UNI history and Klauke is #22 all time. Other varsity standouts were Sydney Field, Marta Meinardi, Mackenzie Field, Vani Tankha and Roseanne Yu. We look forward to seeing what this young squad continues to accomplish this season. GO UNI XC!

Girls Volleyball

The Lady Trojans gear up this week to play CDM Thursday night and head down to San Diego for a tournament this weekend. The team is very excited and amped up to have all these opportunities to show all the hard work they’ve been putting in this season.  Next Monday, 10/16 the girls play Northwood at home and then another home game on Tuesday against Irvine.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team, currently ranked 5th in CIF Division I and 2nd in Orange County, lost a close match to 2nd ranked Peninsula high on Wednesday. With the match tied at 9 sets all, total games were counted and the Trojan girls came up 4 games short.  Freshmen Emily Markus and Mya Wang won two of their three sets in doubles and Dana Feng and Cami Brown each won two sets at singles.

The girls are back in action on today, 10/12 at top ranked CdM.  Good luck girls!

Boys Water Polo

Boys Water Polo has been working hard and putting their time in at practice.  Despite practice and game cancellations due to the fires, our team is showing spirit.  We are improving from last years performance in league, this year with a 1-5 record (7-8 overall).  We will have a tough game today against league leader CDM, but look for our next hard fought win to be vs. Irvine on Tuesday  10/17/17… Senior Day @ Home.  Come out and cheer for our Trojan polo players as we wrap up a senior heavy roster year led by team captains Andrew Weller, Bennett Kidder, and Joe Nagy.

Ocean View arrives motivated, leaves with victory over University

By STEVE FRYER | sfryer@scng.com | Orange County Register

IRVINE – Quarterback Noah Hickman scored all four touchdowns for Ocean View and Nathaniel Washington had 107 receiving yards and an interception for the game’s only turnover in the Seahawks’ 28-21 win over University on Thursday at University High.

Ocean View needed the victory to soothe its psyche. Last week, the Seahawks lost for the first time in 2017 and it was a tough one – 34-33 to Katella. It was their first close game after three wins of 15 points or more.

Playing in such a tight game, win or lose, seemed to have Ocean View prepared for the tough four quarters it got from University.

“Last week we had a very similar game” Ocean View coach Luis Nunez said, “and we were ready.”

Washington said the Seahawks had an inspired week of practice.

“We had to redeem ourselves after last week,” Washington said. “We had to.”

Ocean View concluded the nonleague portion of its schedule with a 4-1 record. The Seahawks are ranked No. 7 in CIF-Southern Section Division 13.

University (4-1) plays its Pacific Coast League opener next Friday, Oct. 6, against Northwood at Portola High.

Ocean View plays its Golden West League opener Oct. 6 at Segerstrom.

Hickman’s fourth touchdown, a 5-yard run on which he dropped back before seeing the right half of the field unoccupied, provided the winning points with 5:57 to go in the fourth quarter. Those points also gave Ocean View its first and only lead of the game.

Washington, who finished with seven receptions, had two catches on that possession, both for first downs. The best of the two came on third down with 29 yards to go at the Ocean View 30-yard line. Washington jumped between two defenders for Hickman’s pass and out-wrestled the two Trojans for a 30-yard gain and a first down.

Earlier in the fourth quarter Washington made a leaping interception.

Hickman finished with 78 rushing yards and 187 passing yards.

Ocean View’s Noah De Loera rushed for 92 yards on 24 carries. He has 701 rushing yards over five games.

University senior quarterback Tristan Lucas passed for 146 yards and a touchdown and ran for a touchdown. It was his third start as the replacement for junior quarterback Thomas Keeling who is out for the season because of a knee injury.

University scored first on a 7-yard touchdown pass from one brother to another – Tristan Lucas connected with sophomore receiver Branton Lucas for a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The Seahawks tied it midway through the second quarter on Hickman’s first touchdown, an 8-yard run. University regained the lead, 14-7, on Tristan Lucas’ 1-yard touchdown run. Hickman’s second touchdown, a 20-yard run on the final play of the second quarter, made it 14-14.

University reclaimed the lead midway through the third quarter on an 8-yard scoring run by Daniel Dolan.

The Seahawks tied it later in the quarter on a 1-yard run by Hickman who in the fourth quarter would supply that 8-yard touchdown run that put his team ahead to stay.

Girls Golf

In girl’s golf this week, the team finished in first place at the annual Long Beach Wilson Invitational tournament for the third time in a row. Yes, it was a three-peat!  The second place team was 12 strokes behind the Uni girls. Nodoka Honda and Dana Choi finished with a 2-under par score of 72. That was a tie for the second best score for any individual golfer at the tournament.  Coco Yang shot a 1-under par 73, giving her a 5th place finish in the tournament. Alexis Kim, sophomore, completed her first official high school golf tournament with a 5-over 79, a very competitive score.

On Tuesday, the team beat Corona Del Mar 184-220.  Low scorer and medal winner was Nodoka Honda with a 33 (2-under par). Both Dana Choi and Coco Yang finished at even par 36. The team is now 7-1 in league and will face Woodbridge next Tuesday in a match at Strawberry Farms that could decide the PCL champion.  The final match of the regular season is next Thursday at Strawberry versus Beckman.

Girls Volleyball

The Trojans this week started off with a tough loss to Woodbridge. The university girls came out strong in the first game with a win. Then Woodbridge came back to win the next 3 games. The games were well fought and University girls showed promise. Although it was a tough loss the girls definitely competed to the best of their abilities. The girls are going to be hungrier than ever the next time we play them. The JV team for University High School beat Woodbridge in 2 games. The JV team is looking good with Coach Jamie Goto leading them to their victories. The freshman team is full of young talent and some very competitive girls. They competed hard against Woodbridge but came up short. Looking forward to today’s game against Beckman High School it’ll be a tough and hard-fought game.
