Boys Basketball

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team opened their season last night with a 67-62 victory over Corona Santiago.  Senior guard Alex Bray led the way scoring 34 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  Junior forward Brandon Liu posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.  Senior guard Kevin Yahampath dished out 16 assists.  The score was tied at 18 after the first quarter.  The Trojans got the lead midway through the second quarter and never relinquished it the rest of the way.

Next week the boys will participate in the St. Margaret’s Tournament.  On Tuesday the Trojans face Sage Hill at 5:00 and then play Pacifica Christian on Wednesday at 3:30.  Admission for the tournament at St. Margaret’s is free.

Girls Basketball

The University Girls Basketball team got off to a great start last week defeating Mission Viejo 62-19.  Junior Malia Goldsmith lead all scores with 16 point.  Karissa Shin added 12 points, Ashley Chandler had 12 points and Claire Kawata had 11 points.  Monday, the Lady Trojans opened the South Coast Tournament playing Mater Dei.  The team lost but had a valiant effort.  Malia Goldsmith had 13 points against the Monarchs.  The girls took on El Toro Wednesday night and came out victorious 58-38.  Malia had 19 points, 6 assists and 6 steals.  Ashley Chandler had 10 points and 13 rebounds. The team will now play Foothill Friday Night at 630pm.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer started their pre-season with a big 7-0 win over Kennedy High School. They were the only team we failed to beat last year in preseason with a 1-1 tie.   Fittingly, Ryan Romero captained the side with a heavy heart and scored his and our first goal of the year. The courage he showed is remarkable.  Senior Darious Abdollahi scored a hat trick, the first time that has been done on opening day in recent history.  Goals were scored by: Darious Abdollahi 3, Ryan Romero, Omar Sabbagh, Ivan Ma, and Kian Mohseni.

Assists for: Aydin Abdollahi, Dhanvi Desu, Lee McEligot 2, Shadman Shaker, and Giorgio Conta.

Next up is D1 powerhouse Huntington Beach on Friday here at Uni at 3:15.  Come out and show your support!

Girls Soccer

The Girls’ Soccer team has gotten off to an amazing start.  They defeated Godinez 3-0 on Monday and El Modena 3-1 on Wednesday.  They will be taking on Orange Lutheran away on Friday, 12/1.  Best of luck girls!

Girls Water Polo

The Girls Water Polo team will be participating in the El Dorado tournament this Friday and Saturday.  Friday’s games will be played at Yorba Linda High School.  Best of luck girls!

Wrestling

The Wrestling team has been practicing hard preparing for the season.  Varsity and JV will be competing this weekend at the Millikan Duals Tournament.  Next Wednesday is the first home dual of the season vs Portola, wrestling will start at 5:00PM.

The Uni Girls Golf team finished 3rd last Thursday in Oxnard at the CIF SCGA Qualifying Tournament.  They have made it further than any Uni golf team has in our history!  The girls are competing today in Riverside for a spot at the state tournament in Pebble Beach.  They need to finish in the top three to qualify.  Congratulations and best of luck!

Girls Tennis

The girl’s tennis team defeated 2nd seeded Peninsula high, 12 to 6 in the CIF D-I semi-final played at Peninsula high school yesterday, Nov. 8th!  The 6th seeded Trojans were led by sophomore Cami Brown who swept her three sets playing singles.  Junior Dana Feng also won 2 of her 3 sets at 3rd singles.  In doubles, freshmen Emily Markus and Mya Wang continued their incredible season winning all three sets and senior captain Kayla Agustin and freshmen Therese Garcia won 2 of 3 sets at third doubles.  The girls will now move on to the CIF final on Friday against Pacific Coast league rival, CdM.  The teams have already met twice this year with the Sea Kings coming out on top both times.

Girls Golf

The girl’s golf team won a CIF Championship on Monday at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. The team score of 365 (5 over par) was 12 strokes better than second place Woodbridge. Nodoka Honda shot a three under par 69 to tie in first place of all individual scores. Coco Yang shot a two under 70. Alexis Kim came in at 1 over 73. Samantha Cabunag scored a 75. Dana Choi shot 78 and Kristin Shea, 82.  The girl’s played really well as a team.

Today we are in Oxnard playing for a shot at the next round of CIF. We are playing against 12 teams. The top four move on to CIF team qualifying for CIF state. If we place top four we will play next week in Riverside for a chance to go to state in Pebble Beach.

In addition, three players, Nodoka, Dana and Alexis are playing today for the CIF Individual Championship.

University stays calm, wins CIF-SS Southern Divisional team championship

Golf championships 11.02.17

By DAMIAN DOTTORE | ddottore@scng.com | Orange County Register

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Nodoka Honda has become very good at multi-tasking, and that, University girls golf coach Kevin Kasper said, has improved her scores on the golf course.

“I know it is a cliché when people say that this game is one shot at a time,” he said, “and so I think it (multi-tasking) helps her zero in when her thoughts are going in 100 different directions.”

She was definitely preoccupied Monday at Mile Square Golf Course, knowing that she had a big chemistry test Tuesday.  While she was waiting to take her next shot during the CIF-SS Southern Team Divisional, she pulled out some flashcards to give herself a quick pop quiz. By the end of the round she had 15 of the 24 answers memorized.

“I do that to calm myself down. It relaxes me,” she said. “I know it made me play better.”

While she clearly needed to do more studying to secure an A on her chemistry exam, she aced her test for the Trojans at Mile Square, shooting a 3-under-par 69 to help University win the divisional championship.

The Trojans finished 5 over par as a team, posting a 365 to beat Pacific Coast League rival Woodbridge by 12 strokes. Huntington Beach placed third with a 396. All three teams advance to the WSCGA team qualifying tournament on Thursday, Nov. 2, at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

“It feels really nice. We came together as a team,” Honda said. “We played very well, and we were really motivated to win.”

The Trojans were the only team in the field to have two players card a sub-par round. Coco Yang fired a 70, and all five of University’s scoring players finished in the 70s. Alexis Kim finished with a 73 while Samantha Cabunag and Dana Choi added a 75 and 78, respectively.

“We really don’t have a true No. 1 player. Every girl can score,” Kasper said. “Our strength is in our depth.  That has been the case for this team for the past three years, and each year we have seen improvement.”

Two years ago the Trojans finished third in this divisional, missing a victory by one stroke. Last year, they finished in second place, three shots back.

“I think it motivated the team this year. We talked about it as we were going into league finals and then this,” Kasper said. “It is sometimes hard to tell with girls how much it motivated them, but I think they all wanted to play well today. I think this shows too that we have one of the strongest leagues around.”

This kind of success is rare for Woodbridge. It is the first time in school history the Warriors have advanced out of a girls golf divisional.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Woodbridge coach Tracy Roberts said. “We have never had the depth to get it done before. When you have four in the 70s and one on the 60s, how can you complain?”

Woodbridge’s Yuki Yoshihara, the Pacific Coast League champion, shared medalist honors with Honda and West Torrance’s Reina Tain by shooting a 69.

The highest score the Warriors had to keep Monday was Ashlee Chung’s 79. Azuma Arai finished with a 74 and Briana Park and Caylee Chung rounded out the scoring for Woodbridge with a 77 and 78, respectively.

“We are finally happy to make a road trip,” Roberts said. “Look at how they are jumping around giggling and laughing. The young players stepped up when they needed to, and that was the difference for us.”

Cross Country

Uni Girls Cross Country had some exciting performances at the Pacific Coast League Finals this week. Junior Cecilia Langlois came back from an injury stronger than ever, running an outstanding time of 17:23 for 2nd overall in the varsity girls race. She is now the #6 fastest girl in school history, even placing her ahead of Uni legend Polly Plummer. Freshman Collette Lowengrub finished 4th overall, with an impressive time of 17:54 over three miles. Avery Klauke also had a strong race, finishing 10th overall with a personal best time of 18:23. Lowengrub and Klauke are now #14 and #20 all time. Unfortunately, our varsity team barely lost a tie for 3rd place and will not be competing as a team at CIF. However, we are excited to cheer on Ceci and Collette as they will be competing as individuals at the CIF SS Prelims next Friday, 11/10 in Riverside. We are happy to be returning our entire varsity team next year and we look forward to cheering these two girls on in the post season. GO UNI XC!!!

Uni boys competed in the PCL league championships yesterday at Irvine park. Most of the team came home with their best performance of the season. In the boys varsity race, our boys had to be at their best with the entire field coming through the first mile at 5 min and to be in the top 20 out of the field of 42, they had to run sub 16 min for the 3 miles. We had one individual do that for the first time and that was Ryan Duffy who was our top performer. Other great performances came from Christian Go, Raja Batra, Nick Choi, Abhi Nisha Anish, Chris Lohmyer. With a young team, we look forward to next year in the new league.

Go Trojan Cross Country!

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team started the CIF D-I playoffs with a 16 to 2 win over Sage Hill.  Cami Brown, Kamar Alajeely and Dana Feng all swept their three matches at singles to lead the Trojans.  Freshmen Mya Wang and Emily Markus won 2 sets playing 1st doubles, Sasha Iraniha and Tiffany Markus won 2 sets at 2nd doubles and Ashi Parashar and Therese Garcia won 2 sets at third doubles before all three teams were subbed out in the third round.  The girls will travel to Manhattan Beach on Friday to take on Mira Costa for a 2nd round match.

In the Pacific Coast League individual tournament, sophomore Cami Brown had an incredible run in the singles draw before losing in the championship match.  Mya Wang and Emily Markus finished in third place in the doubles competition.  All three girls were named to the Pacific Coast All-League first team!  We are so proud of them and all of our girls.
