Winter Sports Update
The Boys Varsity Basketball team scored two big wins to start the St. Margaret’s (San Juan Capistrano) Tournament and improve their record to 3 – 0. University defeated Sage Hill 68 – 29 on Tuesday. Alex Bray had 16 points and 14 rebounds while Kevin Yahampath added 15 points and nine assists. Yesterday the Trojans beat Pacifica Christian of Newport Beach 109 – 69 behind Bray’s 27 points and four three Pointers. Yahampath dished out 15 assists and scored 11 points. Bryan Nguyen added 13 points and ten rebounds while Shan Dharod hit three 3pters and scored 11 points. Uni made 17 threes during the game. On Friday (12/8) the Trojans take on San Juan Hills in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday night the team will face either Mission Viejo or Newport Harbor. Admission is free which means that Coach Dinneen will pay for your ticket.
The Trojan Girls Basketball team finished off the South Coast Classic in 5th place with only one loss and that was to Mater Dei. It was a very successful start to the season. Ashley Chandler and Malia Goldsmith were named to the All-tournament team, but the victories were truly a team effort. Stand out performances from Neeyaz Cyrus, Monique Meriwether and Karissa Shin added to the wins! They will now travel to Katella Thursday night for a non-league game at 7pm.
The Uni Boys continue their winning season with a 2-0 win over El Modena on Tuesday. The entire Boys Soccer program will be heading to Esperanza High School tomorrow, Dec. 8th for a non-league match-up. All games start at 3:00 PM. Good luck boys!
UNI Girls Soccer has started off the year strong, with a 3-1 victory over Capistrano Valley High School putting our season at 3-1-0. Emma Goolsby has already started off the season strong as our lead scorer with 5 goals already this preseason! This great start can only be due to the bond these girls have as a team, and the commitment they have to their UNI soccer family. Today we look to strengthen our standings as we take on Marina High School on their home turf, today at 3:00pm. We will be returning to our own field for our game next Friday (12/15) against La Habra High School at 5:00pm. You don’t want to miss out on this game as we will have giveaways and free tacos to the first 100 students during half time! The boys’ soccer game will also have their game that night, so don’t miss out!
Girls Water Polo
University Girls Water polo conquers Portola once again. For the third time running, UNI’s JV team beats Portola in a close game. In the first quarter, UNI was winning with a 4-2 lead. Joy Chen (So.) scoring 2, with Mae Altarac (So.) and Savanna Cruz (So.) scoring 1. During the second quarter Portola earned 2 goals to bring the score to a 4-4 tie. In the third and fourth quarter a standstill kept up the suspense until player Joy Chen (So.), scored in the last few seconds, earning the game winning goal against the bulldogs. Bringing the score to 5-4 win for UNI. UNI’s frosh team hopes to be successful in the next round against Portola; for now all other UNI water polo girls are practicing hard and looking forward to a promising season.
Last night, JV and Frosh/Soph wrestled Portola High School and both teams won their duals, 48-18 and 39-12. This Saturday Lorena Egea will look to win her first tournament of the season at Santa Ana High School. The boys will be wrestling Saturday at the Tustin tournament. Next week wrestling will kick off league with an away dual at Northwood on Wednesday December 13th.
