Winter Sports Update

Boys Basketball

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team dropped a tough one last night 67 – 60 ending their season to the Crean Lutheran Saints.  The Trojans were paced by Alex Bray with 19 points.  Uni led at halftime by four but were outscored in the second half by the bigger Saints.  Bray was the leading scorer in Orange County averaging 27 points a game.  He set the school single season scoring record by scoring 729 points breaking the old record 662 points held by Ben Kwan in the 2009-10 season.  Kevin Yahampath led the county in assists averaging ten a game.  The Trojans made 306 three point field goals which place them fifth all time in CIF history.

Girls Basketball

After taking the league title, the girls basketball team heads into CIF. They finished the regular season 22-5 and 10-0 in league. The lady Trojans will take on Thousand Oaks High School Thursday night at 7pm in the Uni Gym.  Come out and watch these spectacular ladies!

Boys Soccer

Come out and support the boys this Friday at 3:15 as they take on Long Beach Poly in the first round of CIF Playoffs.   The game is here in the Uni stadium.  Kick off will be at 3:00 p.m.  Hope to see you there!

Wrestling

This weekend Dylan Ohashi, Kea Sadri, and Sam Xie will be competing at CIF.  Best of luck!

Last weekend Lorena Egea wrestled at the Southern Section CIF Finals and came away as the Champion for the 143 lb weight class!  Lorena won all 5 of her matches with 4 coming as pins and 1 default forfeit.  Lorena wrestled on the mat for a total of 5 minutes and 38 seconds for all her matches.  This is a HUGE accomplishment for Lorena as she is the first wrestler in University Wrestling history for both girls and boys to win Masters!

Lorena’s efforts have been recognized by OC Varsity as she is this week’s OC Girls Wrestling Athlete of the Week.  A huge congratulations to Lorena, and now onto state!!

Winter Sports Update

Boys Basketball

Tonight the boys travel to Woodbridge to take on the Warriors with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.  The Trojans have split their two previous meetings with Woodbridge this season.   On Tuesday, the Trojans dropped a tough game to Beckman 66 -61.  Sunday the CIF playoff pairings will be announced and the Trojans hope to secure a wild card berth.

Girls Basketball

The Uni girls basketball team is currently 9-0 and guaranteed at least a share of the league title.  Friday they took home a win over Irvine 59 to 27 with standout performances by Malia Goldsmith with 23 points and Karissa Shin added 12 points.  Tuesday, they continued their run with a win over Beckman on a fantastic Senior Night.  The 69-43 win capped off the league title with great games by Ashley Chandler with 17 points, 10 rebounds and Karissa Shin with 13 points, 13 rebounds.  We had a special night honoring our seniors – Monique Meriwether, Alexis-Brooke LoBianco, Nicole Mori, Karissa Shin and Ashley Chandler.  The Lady Trojans travel to Woodbridge tonight in their final league game at 5:30pm.  CIF games will begin next week so stay tuned for dates and times.  Go Trojans!

Boys Soccer

Boys Soccer won their first game of the week on Monday evening away at Beckman to move to 16-1-2 overall and 9-0-0 in league. We won 4-1 with goals from Giorgio Conta, Sam Kammerman and 2 from Kyle Schaal. Assists went to Sam Kammerman, Giorgio Conta, Lee McEligot and Sebastian Hertel.

Our final league game yesterday ended in a frustrating 0-0 tie as Woodbridge needed only a tie to make CIF so put everyman behind the ball for the whole game and defended on the edge of their own box with all their players.  We couldn’t find a way through but hit the post and crossbar coming very close.

This means no perfect season but the first undefeated one in school history we believe at 9-0-1 (16-1-3 overall). Fantastic achievement from the boys.

CIF will start at home next Friday.
Lower levels both won their leagues too.
JV finishing league with a 7-0-3 record
Frosh finishing league with a 8-1-1 record.

Congrats to all involved in our program.

Girls Soccer

Varsity Girls Soccer lost to Woodbridge last night in their final league game of the season with a score of 1-2.  Play-off placements will be announced on Sunday.  Stay tuned for more information.

Girls Water Polo

The girls finished their season Wednesday with a tough loss to Woodbridge who they had beat the previous two times they played.   Only putting away 2 of 16 attempts.  It is always hard to win three times against a tough opponent, but they walked away with their heads up high and excited for the future of next year.  The JV team outplayed Woodbridge with a 5-0 score by the final buzzer.  Great defensive effort and a true sense of what our team will look like in the years to come. The girls have committed to swimming and playing more water polo together over the next few months.  We are very excited to see what the future will bring us.

Wrestling

The boys continue practicing and preparing for the CIF next weekend at Great Oak HS in Temecula valley.

Lorena Egea will be competing this weekend at Southern Section CIF Finals in order to qualify for the Girls State tournament.

Big changes ahead for University High School Athletics.  After 32 years as our Head Football Coach, Mark Cunningham has decided to retire this year.  Check out this article from OC Varsity.

Mark Cunningham to retire after 32 years as University’s football coach

IRVINE – Longtime University football head coach Mark Cunningham announced Sunday night, Jan. 28, at the team’s annual banquet that he will retire at the end of the school year after 32 years, saying, “it was just the right time to do it.”

No replacement has been made for the 67-year-old Cunningham, who started at University in 1986.

“It went really well. There were a lot of former players who showed up and I guess the boosters suspected it so they had something set up,” Cunningham said in an interview Sunday night.

“It was quite a tribute. It was an amazing night. It was emotional.”

Cunningham said he did not want word of his retirement to be released before he could tell his players, and he did so at the end of the banquet on campus. News of the retirement had reached the University boosters, who honored the coach.

“Thirty-two years, that’s quite an accomplishment, especially when you take a look at the merry-go-round that was there before I got there,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said that during the banquet he had “a deep appreciation for everything that Uni has given me and the players and the experiences that I’ve had.”

He added, “I couldn’t have been more happy about my time at Uni and I think it’s time for someone new to come in, and they’re going to have a pretty darn good team next year and they’re going to be excited about it. There is going to be some new blood and some new ideas.”

Cunningham said he will continue to teach, run the offseason football program and be athletic director until a new coach is selected.

“The timing is right as it will provide University the opportunity to hire the best possible coach and not be restricted as to what their credential is in,” Cunningham said.

“If I were to stay one more year, and believe me with next year’s team it would be very easy to stay one more year, the same opportunity (for a new coach) would not be available.”

Cunningham was tied with Newport Harbor’s Jeff Brinkley for Orange County’s most active tenured years as a football coach. Brinkley announced his retirement on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Cunningham has been a high school coach for 41 years. He took half a season off to deal with cancer treatments in 2010 but returned that season for the league portion of the team’s schedule. He has been cancer-free for seven years, he said Sunday.

“What a year,” he said when looking back at that season.

University finished 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific Coast League this past season. The Trojans defeated Beckman 35-21 in what turned out to be Cunningham’s final game Nov. 2, but it wasn’t enough to help the Trojans qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs.

Cunningham said the highlights of his time as University’s coach include the 1991 season when the Trojans finished fourth in the league, got an at-large berth in the CIF-SS playoffs and upset No. 1 seed Garden Grove, which was undefeated.

Cunningham’s other top memories include three league championships and 14 CIF-SS playoff appearances.

He also mentioned the 1995 team which he called the “Dirty 30.”

“We made a decision that we would go with the players who really wanted to play and make a commitment,” he said. “We started with over 60 players but ended up with 30 and went to the playoffs that year. It was a great group and very gratifying season. There were more cheerleaders than football players.”

Cunningham also coached at Garey High of Pomona from 1977 to 1980, and held head coaching jobs at Chino from 1981 to 1982, Garey in 1983 and at Truckee from 1984 to 1985.

His family includes his wife, Cassie Parham, daughter Kelly Connor, son-in-law Kevin Connor, son Casey Cunningham and grandchildren Jamison Connor and Paisley Mae Connor.

Cunningham said he plans to ski, play golf and “maybe be an assistant football coach on a voluntary basis.”
