Spring Sports Update

Baseball

U*N*I Baseball is 9-2 overall and 2-2 in the PCL.  The team travels to Beckman to play this afternoon at 3:30.  The U*N*I Team is going to participate in the Ryan Lemmon Tournament over the Spring Break; Sat, 8:30 vs Bountiful HS at Cypress Park, Mon, 8:45 vs Dana Hills Windrow 2, Tues, 5:15 vs Tustin at Ryan Lemmon Stadium, Wed TBD.

Boys Golf

The team had a busy week. Since last Thursday, we played 3 matches…CDM, Woodbridge, and Irvine.  We lost a close one against CDM at home last Thursday. It was a match we should have won. The score was tied at 202.  We lost on the 6th player tiebreaker.  In case if a tie, we look at the highest score out of the 6 players and whoever has the lowest score wins.  It shouldn’t have had come down to the tiebreaker because one of CDM players should have been accessed a 2 stroke penalty but our boys didn’t catch the rules violation.

We lost to the defending PCL and CIF champions Woodbridge HS this past Monday at Rancho San Joaquin.  On Tuesday, we won our 1st league match against Irvine 209 to 239. It was a good score considering we were without one of our best players, Connor O’Brien.

League play continues after spring break with 3 back to back matches 4/10 through 4/12.  The matches will be Tuesday with Beckman at Tustin Ranch Golf Club, Wednesday with CDM at Newport Beach Country Club, and back home at Strawberry Farms against Northwood on Thursday.

Wish us luck. Go Trojans!!

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team played two important league games this week. On Monday Irvine HS visited Uni HS for their first of two matchups. The Trojans came out strong and energetic, controlling the ball and game from start to finish. With an efficient offense, lead by senior Nick Khamseh and junior Oliver Kubit and stellar defensive play by senior Ryan Hane and Junior goalie Rustin Sorat the team lead 8-4 at halftime. The second half would be even better as the Trojans would outscore IHS 7-1. Final score 13-5.

On Wednesday the Trojans faced a senior dominate Woodbridge team which they had lost to last year twice by a combined 3 points. WHS was determined to put some distance between the two programs this year with a strong effort right from the first whistle. The Warriors won the ground ball war and the game literally running away with it 15-4.

Girls Lacrosse

Girls lacrosse is having a tremendous season.  The girls have won their last three games.  Last Friday, they beat Yorba Linda 17-5, on Monday they came out on top of Irvine, beating them 18-4 and in their game against Woodbridge yesterday, they won 17-7.  Congratulations girls!

Softball

Congratulations to the Uni Softball Team.  Varsity went undefeated at the two-weekend Katella tournament!  On March 17th, the Trojans beat Orange High School 12 – 2 and they beat Calvary Chapel 9-7.  On March 24th, Uni beat Loara 12-5 and the Trojans also defeated Santa Ana, 12-0.  Way to go ladies!

Come out and support the team today at 3:30 for their home game against Rancho Alamitos.  Best of luck ladies!

Boys Swimming

The boys will be training over the break and will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11th against Irvine.  The meet is at Woollett Aquatic Center at 3:15.  After that they will be competing at Portola High School on Thursday, April 12th at 3:00.

Girls Swimming

Yesterday, the Uni swimmers traveled to Northwood for their second league meet, falling to the Timberwolves in all 3 Girls Divisions: Varsity, JV and Open.   Nevertheless, there were several strong swims and time improvements. For the Varsity, Alondra Ortiz was a double winner in both the 100 fly and the 100 backstroke, lowering her CIF consideration times in both.  Claire Jang was second in both the 50 free and the 100 fly, only 0.2 seconds behind Ortiz in the fly.  Freshman Chloe Johansson had a 2.59 second drop in her 200 free, Kristina Yan, Yuuri Yoshikawa and Marta Meinardi all had significant time drops in the 200 IM, Danica Wong had a 1.74 second drop in her 100 breaststroke and Angela Yan had a whopping 10 second drop in her 500 freestyle. The 400 freestyle relay team of Jang, Anne Iwata, Ortiz and Leila Mirsafian had a season best time by 2.61 seconds to lower their CIF consideration time once again.

First place finishers in the JV division included Ira Chaturvedi  in the 100 fly, Maria Langlois in the 500 free,  and Sabine Saivucci in the 100 back.  First place finishers in the Open division included Aeven Mooney in the 50 fly, and Jessica Wong in the 100 free.

The girls will be training hard over spring break, and then open the second half of the season on 4/11 against Woodbridge HS with a second meet that week against Portola on 4/12.  Good luck, girls!

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team moved to 2 and 0 in league with a 16 to 2 win over Irvine high school.  Last weekend the boys lost in the semi-final of the National All-American tournament.  Junior Aditya Gupta was named to the prestigious “All-Tournament” team.  The boys will be back in action today with a match at home against Woodbridge.  Unfortunately, the Trojans will be without their #1 player, Aditya Gupta who has made it to the quarter-final of the Easter Bowl in Palm Springs.  We wish Adi best of luck in this top national singles tournament.

Track & Field

This past Saturday, girls track had a small number of athletes who competed at the Beach Cities Invitational. Daria Shkel finished 2nd in the entire meet for both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Katherine Loritz also finished 2nd in the meet for the girls frosh/soph high jump with a new personal best of 4’8’’. Harini Venkataganesh had solid performances in the discus and shot put as well as Amber Sun in the high jump. We started our league competition this past Tuesday against Northwood. Freshman standout Collette Lowengrub ran the fastest 1600  in the PCL so far with a time of 5:17. Lowengrub also won the 800. Other top varsity performers were Sara Sussman, Avery Klauke, Mollie Kessler and Harini Venkataganesh. This a big week for UNI track as we compete against CDM+Irvine today, 3/29. Come out and support!

Boys Track was rained out last Thursday but had a great outing at the Beach Cities invitational. Evan Pariser and Sam Kamerman both medaled in the high Jump at 6’, Faris Qaisi medaled in both the 100 and 200, and Matt Tang medaled in the 100. Our best performance of the day came from our boys F/S Distance medley. Not only did they win but they set a new meet record. The team was made up of Adam Gish, Ethan Jenkins, Raja Batra and Ryan Duffy. This last Tuesday we made up our first league meet with Northwood here at Uni. At the meet, we had some great performances from Ryan Duffy and Adam Gish in the 1600, Evan Pariser in the 110 HH, Daniel Vilchis in the 400, Faris Qaisi in the 100, Lee McEligot and Adam Gish in the 800, Raja Batra in the 3200 and our 4 x 400 team ( Chistian Go, Michael Blinstrub, Neel Chowdary and Daniel Vilchis). Today we have a Tri meet with Irvine and CDM here at Uni. Come support. Go Trojan Track and Field!

Track 3.29.18

Boys Volleyball

All levels of the Boys Volleyball team are doing good.  J.V. and the Frosh/Soph team beat Northwood last week and the Varsity also won, 3-1.  We were bested by CDM’s talented team once again on Tuesday.  Bringing our league record to 1-2.  We go to Irvine tonight with hopes of evening out our league record.  JV and Frosh/soph game is at 4pm and Varsity is at 5:15 at Irvine High school.  We’d love to see you there supporting our boys!!  GO TROJANS!!

Spring Sports Update

Baseball

Baseball is 7 and 2.  They lost a close game to Northwood 3-1 and ran into a hot CDM team on Tuesday and lost 13-5.  The U*N*I team plays at IHS on Friday, hosts WHS on Tuesday and completes the first round of PCL play with an away game at Beckman next Thursday.  The U*N*I team will play in the Ryan Lemmon Tournament over the Spring Break.

Boys Golf

We started league matches this week with Northwood yesterday at Oak Creek and CDM today at Strawberry Farms. Due to the music festival at Uni, we were shorthanded 2 of our staters Dylan Kurnnemann and Steven Li. We lost to to Northwood 192 to 181.  I am extremely proud of the team as they collectively played our best round even without the 2 starters. 192 is our best so far this year!  Freshman George Lu shot even par 35 for our best score. Today we match up against CDM at Strawberry Farms Golf Course. They return all but one player from last year’s talented team. But we are also better this year and will go for the win today!

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team played their first Pacific Coast League game versus Northwood on Monday.  The Trojans came out firing and pulled ahead early 6-3 with goals from Nick Khamseh, Oliver Kubit, Lucas Hall and Matt McCarthy, but the Timberwolves stormed back to tie the game. There would be 5 lead changes going into the 4th quarter. The game was very heated, both sides battling every possession. The Trojans had many Man-Up opportunities, due to NHS overzealous play, but came away with few points. This would prove to be the difference as the game would end 14-13.

Girls Lacrosse

Come out and support Girls Lacrosse tomorrow as they take on Yorba Linda.  Varsity plays at 4:00 p.m. in the Uni Stadium.  The JV game will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Uni Stadium.  Come out and watch these amazing girls!

Softball

The softball game scheduled with La Quinta high school today was unfortunately rained out.  The girls will be competing in the Katella tournament this Saturday.  They will be playing Loara High School at Loara at 9:00 a.m. and Santa Ana at Katella High School at 12:00 p.m.  Best of luck girls!

Boys Swimming

The Uni boys swim team is starting to hit their stride this season! They followed up a nice finish at the Capo Valley Relay Invitational two weekends ago with a close win over Santa Margarita at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Open Divisions. Yesterday, the Trojans opened up their season against Pacific Coast League opponents by handily defeating the CDM team 110 – 60! All relays featured stand-out swims from multiple members. Additionally, senior Aidan Yong, junior Aaron Lee, and sophomores Brian Lou and Caedon Ng had particularly impressive individual performances! The team will be prepping for a challenging match-up against their rival Northwood next week! Go Uni!

Girls Swimming

The girls swim team had two challenging meets this past week.  Last Thursday they swam against the four-time defending CIF-SS champions, Santa Margarita CHS, and yesterday in the GOW (or MOW) hosted Corona del Mar.

Although the defending champions prevailed, the Santa Margarita meet resulted in some fast times for Uni.  Season best times were recorded by sophomore Kate Weiland in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke, and by freshman Marta Meinardi in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, with a 3 second drop in the 500. Both sophomore Leila Mirsafian and senior tri-captain Anne Iwata had season best times in the 50 free, with Iwata also posting a season best in the 100 free.  Senior tri-captain Alondra Ortiz and freshman Isabella Pagano swam to season best times in the 100 fly, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Pagano, Iwata, Mirsafian and senior tri-captain Claire Jang lowered their CIF consideration time to 1:45.14.

Yesterday, in their first PCL meet against CDM, the girls lost a close one, 88-81, with the meet coming down to the last relay.  All 3 relays dropped significant amounts of time, with the 200 Medley relay of Ortiz, Weiland, Jang and Mirsafian dropping 2 full seconds to lower their CIF consideration time to 1:53.04, the 200 free relay of freshman Kristina Yan, Iwata, Mirsafian and Jang winning with a time of 1:45.02, and the 400 free relay of Ortiz, Weiland, K. Yan and Iwata dropping 2.5 seconds with a time of 3:55.44.   Weiland dropped her 200 IM time by 2 seconds and also her 100 breast time for two  new season bests,  Ortiz made her CIF consideration time in the 100 fly with a season best  1:00.69, freshman Lia Ciu dropped her 100 back time by more than 2 seconds, as did senior Yuuri Yoshikawa in the 100 breaststroke. Meinardi dropped her 500 time once again, and freshman Ira Chaturvedi had a 3.6 second drop in the 100 fly.  Many other swimmers had time improvements as well.

The team will travel to Northwood next Wednesday.

Come on out and support the swim team!  Good luck, girls!

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team started league play on Tuesday with a 14 to 4 win over Northwood.  Naevin Anukornchaikul won his two sets playing first singles.  Freshmen Rithvik Krishna also won two sets playing 3rd singles.  In doubles play, Patryk Kozlowski and Julian Lafond continued their incredible start to the season winning their two sets to remain undefeated.  And, Luis Moros and Cameron Sepahi spet their three sets at 2nd doubles.

The boys are the top ranked team in Orange County and the #1 team in CIF D-I.  Uni will also be the 2nd seeded team in the prestigious National All-American tournament taking place tomorrow and Saturday at the Uni courts and other local clubs.  16 teams will be competing from around the nation for the title that Uni has already won 3 times.

Track & Field

Girls track had another solid performance against Huntington Beach last week, despite a close loss. It was our last pre-season meet, and we are feeling prepared and looking forward to starting our actual season.  Collette Lowengrub and Avery Klauke once again finished 1-2 in the 1600. Daria Shkel continues to dominate the hurdle events, winning both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Sara Sussman and Vani Tanka finished 1-2 in the 400, and we swept the 800m (Sara Sussman, Collette Lowengrub, Abigail Sanders). Other top varsity contributors were Amber Sun, Sandy Zhang, Harini Venkataganesh and Jamie Kim.

We also competed at the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational this past weekend where Collette Lowengrub and Daria Shkel put up impressive performances among the best in Orange County. Lowengrub raced in the prestigious Eric Hulst 3200m and finished as the fastest freshman in the entire meet with a time of 11:28 over 8 laps. Shkel placed 3rd overall in the 100 hurdles and 4th overall in the 300 hurdles. We look forward to more exciting performances from these ladies.

Come support the girls this Thursday, 3/22 for our first PCL meet against Northwood on our home track. GO UNI!

The Boys track lost another close preseason meet coming down to the 4 x 400 relay. The athletes are coming together and we had some very good performances. In the 1600, Adam Gish and Ryan Duffy, in the 800, Raja Batra, in the 110 H, Charlie Feuerborn and Evan Pariser, in the 300 H, Michael Wu, Charlie Feuerborn and Yarin Heffes, In the 400, Daniel Vilchis, Michael Blinstrub and Neel Chowdhary, in the 100, Faris Qaisi, in the 200, Faris Qaisi and Matt Tang, in the 3200, Ryan Liang, In the long jump, Won Suk Choi, in the High jump, Won Suk Choi and Evan Pariser. We also won the 4 x 400. Our first league meet is set for Thursday against Northwood weather permitting. Go Trojan Tack!

Boys Volleyball

The Boys Volleyball team is off to a great start this season!  We won the Foothill Classic Varsity tournament last weekend and we are starting to hit our stride.  We took a tough loss to a very talented CDM team last night but the boys are ready to come back strong this Friday against Northwood.  With 12 very talented seniors on the team this year we have a very good shot of being one of the top teams in the league and I’m excited for what the rest of the season has in store.  Our first home league game is next week on Tuesday 3/27/18 against CDM and we would love to see you there!  Go Trojans!!

Spring Sports Update

Baseball

Baseball went 5-0 in the Newport Elks tournament.  They were Champions of the Orange Division.  The 7-0 U*N*I Baseball Team opens up PCL action on Friday, 3/16, 3:30, versus Northwood HS.

Boys Golf

As we finish up the non-conference pre-season portion of our schedule today at Talega Golf Club against San Juan Hills, I can’t but help to have a sense of optimism.  Although I have anticipated better overall team scores, I have seen our talented freshman gain confidence and it has reflected in lower scores.  Our returning players have also improved. We still have a long ways to go but we are moving in the right direction!!

Next week starts league play with Northwood HS at Oak Creek Golf Course on Wednesday and then CDM on Thursday at Our home course of Strawberry Farms.  We are looking forward to playing in one of the toughest golf leagues in Orange County and making a push to CIF.

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team is 3-3 going into their last preseason game this Friday night at Dana Hills. On Monday the squad dominated the Tustin Tillers 15-5 with solid second half team play. Lacrosse is a combination of brutality and finesse and the team is competitive and in the hunt for the PCL title. FUN FACT: In 2017/2018 there is a 13% chance of getting a full-ride scholarship in lacrosse compared to a 2-5% chance in all other sports combined.

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse had a good week, earning two wins against El Dorado and El Toro.  Last Friday, the girls were in action against a very feisty El Dorado squad.  Despite falling behind by three goals and trailing at halftime by one, the team worked hard and played some phenomenal lacrosse to tie the match, 10-10, in regulation.  Mya Wang (Fr.), in overtime, ran the ball up field, drew a penalty shot, and rocketed home the game winner.  It was a deserved win and the girls stayed strong in a game where officials showed El Dorado players 4 different yellow cards.

In their first home match of the season, the girls played El Toro and, again, were down by one at half time, 4-5.  However, the offense lit up El Toro during the second half, scoring 4 unanswered goals in the first four minutes, and they never looked back.  Netting twelve total goals in the second half, the team dominated play all over the field.  The defense and goalies worked tirelessly to stifle El Toro’s offense, and though they managed some goals, the girls were simply too much for El Toro to get back into the game.

The squad is back in action tomorrow night (3/16), away, against Valencia and league play starts next week.  The first home match, against Corona del Mar, is slated for Wednesday, March 21.  Please come and support!

Softball

Softball is headed to Ocean View High School today for a non-league game.  Both JV and Varsity play at 3:15.  Best of luck ladies!

Boys Swimming

The Trojan boys swim team performed exceptionally at the Capo Valley Relay Invitational, a meet featuring 25 of the top teams in Orange County and Los Angeles. The Varsity boys dropped season-best times and placed 4th overall, while the Frosh-Soph team stepped up and placed 2nd overall. The boys team will look to continue their success today (3/15) as they battle the always-challenging Santa Margarita team. Go Uni!

Girls Swimming

The swim team participated in the fast Capistrano Valley HS Relay Invitational last week, with girls prelims on Thursday and combined girls and boys finals on Saturday afternoon. This meet included most of the top teams in Orange County and many meet records were broken.  The Uni girls qualified for finals in 7 out of 7 possible relays in the Frosh/Soph division and 6 out of 7 in the Varsity division. The Varsity 200 medley relay team of Alondra Ortiz (backstroke), Kate Weiland (breaststroke), Isabella Pagano (butterfly) and Claire Jang (freestyle anchor) lowered their CIF consideration time again, posting a 1:55.08 in Saturday’s final.  The Varsity girls finished 14th and Frosh/Soph finished 9th out of the 21 participating high schools which included 12 out of the top 20 teams from the 2017 CIF-SS  Division 1 Championships.

Today, March 15th, the team travels to Santa Margarita HS for a challenging dual meet against the 3 time defending CIF-SS Division 1 Champions.  It is a fast pool, and with the excellent competition some nice time drops are expected.  Good luck swimmers!

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team defeated Dana Hills 17 to 1 last Thursday to improve to 10 and 0 on the year.  The boys were rained out against Fountain Valley on Tuesday but will be back in action against San Clemente today at Uni.  Currently the boys are the top ranked team in Orange County and #1 in the CIF Southern section for Division 1.  Go Trojans!

Track & Field

Girls track had another successful preseason meet against Godinez this past Thursday, winning 84-38. Collette Lowengrub and Avery Klauke went 1-2 in the 1600m and 3200m. Daria Shkel once again took the win in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles. Harini Venkataganesh placed first in both the shot put and discus. Other top performers included Mollie Kessler, Abigail Sanders, Roseanne Yu, Sandy Zhang, and Amber Sun. This week we are up against Huntington Beach on our home track. Come out and support. GO UNI!

Boys Track had their second preseason meet against Godinez High School here at Uni. We had another tough loss but still had some fine performances. Raja Batra in the 1600 and 3200, Adam Gish, Christian Go and Chris Lohmeyer in the 800, Charlie Feuerborn and Evan Pariser in the 110HH, Micheal Wu and Oliver Corpus in the 300H, Daniel Vilchis in the 400, Faris Qaisi and Austin lake in the 100 and 200. Juan Rodriguez and Matt Naranjo in the Long Jump, Won Suk Choi and Aaron Haung in the Triple Jump, Evan Pariser and Juan Rodriguez in the High Jump. This week we are up against Huntington Beach High School here at Uni. Go Trojan Track!

Boys Volleyball

The boys are headed to Tesoro today for a non-league match up.  Lower levels play at 4:30 at Tesoro high school and Varsity plays at 5:30.  Best of luck!

IRVINE – University was banged up and tired just four days after winning its first CIF-SS boys soccer title, but the Trojans found a way to beat La Habra 2-1 in overtime Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Division III Southern California Regional playoffs.

The Trojans were missing two of their best players – Pedro Palmaka, who scored four playoff goals, and Zach Howard, the team’s lock-down defender – because of knee injuries.

Good thing they still had Sebastien Hertel. He provided a goal and an assist on the winning goal to beat the visiting Highlanders (15-12-3).

The Trojans (23-1-3) will face Villa Park in the SoCal  semifinals Thursday, which is a rematch of Saturday’s CIF-SS Division 3 championship game that University won 2-0.

The Trojans came close to having to send Hertel to the bench early in Tuesday’s game.

As he followed through on the shot that gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, he injured his ankle. It swelled close to the size of a tennis ball, University coach Martin Wallwork said.

“He was on one leg after that,” Wallwork said. “I asked him if he could go and he told me he would give everything he had. And he plays nearly every minute after that.

“He is the best high school player, bar none. Period. On one leg he is beating players (for La Habra) that are fresh.”

Four minutes into the 15-minute overtime period, Hertel dribbled around and through at least four Highlanders, making his way into the box. He eventually flicked the ball to Darious Abdollahi, who guided a shot inside the far post.

The Trojans defeated the Highlanders by the same score in the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals on Feb. 27, but that game didn’t go to overtime.

“After winning the championship on Saturday, this game kind of had the feel of a preseason game,” Wallwork said. “It was hard to get them back up for it, and then there’s the fatigue. They hardly had any time to recover. They (La Habra) were fresh. I thought we were the better team, but that No. 17 (Rene Martinez) is a crakin’ player.”

Martinez scored the tying goal in the 48th minute, wrapping a free kick around Uni’s wall.

That was the only shot James Choi didn’t stop for University, as he finished with six saves.

Twice he slid and kicked the ball away at the last second, turning away Christian Bribiesca’s shot in the first half and Tanner Coombs’ scoring chance in the final minute of the second half.

“He (Choi) did a great job,” La Habra coach Joel Carlisle said of Choi. “We knew we were going to have to take advantage of opportunities, and we missed a couple. That was the difference for us.

“We are super-proud of what they have accomplished this year. We asked them to believe in themselves, and that is what they have done.”

As the No. 1 seed, the Trojans will be the home team for the SoCal semifinal on Thursday. An event is already scheduled for University High’s stadium on Thursday night, Wallwork said, so the semifinal match will likely be played at El Modena High.

Spring Sports Update

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team is off to a great start to the 2018 season.  The boys began the season with a 16-2 win over San Marino on Tuesday February 20th.  Later that week the boys won the So Cal high school pre-season championships defeating Peninsula high in the final.  Junior Aditya Gupta won a crucial set at first singles with the match tied at 2 apiece to put the Trojans up 3 to 2.  Seniors Patryk Kozlowski and Julian Lafond went undefeated at 2nd doubles.  16 teams were entered in this tournament and the Uni boys had to beat 6 of the top teams in Southern California to win the title.

Last Tuesday the boys defeated the defending D-I champs, The Harvard-Westlake school 11 to 7.  Aditya Gupta and senior Naevin Anukornchaikul led the team in singles and Kozlowksi and Lafond swept their sets in doubles.  Finally, yesterday the boys defeated Los Al high 16 to 2.  Freshmen Rithvik Krishna won his two sets playing singles.  The Uni boys look to be pretty strong this year and should make a deep run in the CIF playoffs.

Boys Volleyball

The boys will be competing in the Foothill tournament this Friday and Saturday.  Uni’s first game will be at 3:30 on Friday at Foothill High School.  Best of luck boys!

Track & Field

Girls track had our first pre-season meet against El Modena this past Thursday. Our distance squad swept the 1600m (Collette Lowengrub, Avery Klauke, Abby Sanders) and the 800m (Collette Lowengrub, Sara Sussman, Abby Sanders). Avery Klauke also won the 3200m, and Sara Sussman won the 400m. Top returner Daria Shkel started her season strong, winning both the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles. Other notable performances came from Mollie Kessler who won the long jump and placed 3rd in the 100m, Amber Sun who won the high jump, and Harini Venkataganesh who won the Discus and placed 3rd in the shot put. We continue our preseason meets today, March 8th against Godinez here in our home stadium. GO UNI TRACK!

Boys Track had their first meet against El Modena High School here at Uni. We had some great performances but came up short in the scoring. Some of our top performers included Ryan Duffy in the 1600, Adam Gish in the 800, Won Suk Choi in the long and triple jump, Faris Qaisi in the 100 and 200 and Charlie Feuerborn in the 110 and 300 hurdles. We have Godinez here for our next meet.

Go Trojan Track

Boys Swimming

The Uni boys swim team got underway with their competitive season this week, narrowly placing second in the Irvine City Relays and battling to the last relay with Laguna Hills. During both meets, many swimmers beat time standards to gain eligibility to compete at CIF.  CIF times were made by senior Aidan Yong, junior Aaron Lee, and sophomores Brian Lou, Hunter Kroll, and Caedon Ng. Uni will look to continue their success as they face off against the top teams in Orange County this Friday and Saturday at the Capo Valley Relay Invitational. Come out to support the Trojan swimmers!

Girls Swimming

The Uni girls swim team’s season began with four meets in the last week.  On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the annual Blue vs White Intra-squad co-ed meet came down to the last relay with the Blue team taking home the trophy.  Both Girls Blue and White 200 Medley Relays and 200 Freestyle Relays teams recorded CIF consideration times.

Last Friday Uni swim participated in the annual Irvine City Relay Championships against Irvine High, Northwood, and Beckman, and Portola. The Varsity girls finished 2nd and the JV girls finished third, for a combined girls 3rd place finish.  Senior captains Claire Jang and Alondra Ortiz swam to individual CIF consideration times as the leadoff swimmer in the 100 yard butterfly relay (Jang) and the 100 backstroke relay (Ortiz) respectively.   The 200 yard Medley Relay team of Ortiz, sophomore Kate Weiland, Jang and  senior captain Anne Iwata finished 2nd with a CIF consideration time of 1:57.12.  The 400 freestyle relay of Iwata, junior Sarah Sharifi, and sophomores Savanna Cruz and Leila Mirsafian also finished 2nd with a CIF consideration time of 3:57.66.

This past Tuesday afternoon the team traveled to Laguna Hills High School, with the Varsity Girls winning by a score of 88-81, and the JV girls winning 115-52.  All three relays lowered their CIF consideration times, with the 200 free relay of Mirsafian, freshman Isabella Pagano, Iwata and Jang, dropping 2.5 seconds with their first place finish.  Savanna Cruz dropped 4.2 seconds in the 200 freestyle and 6.5 seconds in the 500 freestyle, winning the 500.  Jang, Pagano and Iwata went 1-2-3 in the 50 free with all three swimmers dropping time and Jang coming very close to the CIF automatic time, finishing in 24.79.

The team travels today to Capistrano Valley High school for the preliminary session of the annual Capo Valley relay meet against many of the fastest high schools in the LA and OC area. The relays that advance to finals will swim again on Saturday afternoon at the same venue.

Go Uni Swim!

Baseball

Baseball is off to a fast start…they are 6-0.  It has truly been a team effort—with the Pitchers, Offense, Defense and the important Bench all contributing to the team’s success.  They play Irvine HS on Friday in the Championship Game in the Newport Elks Tournament—Orange County Division.

Softball

The girls will be playing Costa Mesa at home tomorrow, March 9th at 3:15, come out and support!

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse officially kicked off their season yesterday with an away match against Mission Viejo.  Despite taking almost six minutes for either team to get on the board, Uni scored first and then never looked back as they cruised to a 9-1 victory!  Mya Wang (Fr.) was the lead scorer with 3 goals while Kaylor Chott (Sr.) and Olivia Holmes (Sr.) added 2 goals apiece.  Goalie Gracelyn Caceros (Jr.) had six saves to keep the Mission Viejo squad from getting in to the game.  It was a great first match for the team and they all hope to start a streak of wins beginning tomorrow when they play El Dorado.  The first home match for the girls is next Wednesday, 4:00 PM, in the stadium.  Come cheer on the team!

Boys Lacrosse

The University boys varsity lacrosse team heads into Friday night’s match against Martin Luther King high school at 5 PM in the stadium with a record of 2 and 2. The Trojans who finished in 3rd place in the PCL last year are looking to improve their defense in this game and protect their goalie Rustin Sorat better. There are only three preseason games left to continue to build chemistry until they start the regular season against Northwood.

Boys Golf

The boy’s golf team lost a close match yesterday at Seacliff Country Club against Huntington Beach 201 to 199. This was our 3rd preseason non-league match and we have improved as a team each and every time.

The league matches we play take the best 5 out of 6 scores from each team to determine the winner. Yesterday, however, since we were the visiting team, we played how Huntington Beach plays their preseason matches – best 5 out of 8. We finished tied 201 to 201 after 6 players and would have won the tie breaker (by looking at the 6th player’s score…lowest wins).  But their 8th player came in 2 strokes better so their score was 199. We will play them again next Monday at home…we will WIN!

We were led by one of our top talented freshman, George Lu. He shot an incredible 34, that’s 2 under par, for 9 holes at a very challenging Seacliff Country Club. He took Medalist Honors (lowest score for both teams) by 3 shots!

Up next will be Huntington Beach at home next Monday and San Juan Hills at Talega Country Club next Thursday.  League play starts the following week!  Go Trojans!!

IRVINE – A right-place-at-the-right-time goal has University’s boys soccer team in the right place for the first time in a long time.

Pedro Palmaka took a perfect cross pass from Lee McEligot and slammed it into the left side of the net for the eventual winning goal as the Trojans defeated La Habra 2-1 in a CIF-SS Division 3 semifinal Tuesday at University High.

The Trojans (20-1-3) will play Villa Park (14-5-5) in the championship match Friday at Corona High or Warren High of Downey. Details will be announced by the CIF-SS office Wednesday.

University is in a boys soccer final for the first time since 1979 when it was the Division 2A runner-up.

“University soccer has been around since 1976,” said Palmaka, a junior forward. “Nobody here’s been able to do this for so long.”

Palmaka said his goal, his 14th of the season, was a familiar result.

“With me and ‘Seabass’ (Sebastian Hertel) on the wings,” Palmaka said, “we’re always going to get that ball. It’s a matter of whether or not we have someone in the box to finish it. I was fortunate to be in the right position.”

The Trojans, a bit quicker to the ball than La Habra, especially in the second half, took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a free-kick goal from 30 yards out by senior Darious Abdollahi.

After Palmaka’s second-half goal made it 2-0, La Habra got its goal from Tanner Coombs late in the game. It was Coombs’ third goal of the playoffs.

La Habra, the Freeway League’s second-place team, finished 16-11-3.

“We’re a young group with a lot of sophomores,” Highlanders coach Joel Carlisle. “They’re learning how to play soccer as a group, how to win together and how to handle adversity.”

The Highlanders impressed University coach Martin Wallwork.

“They played the game the right way,” Wallwork said. “Both teams gave this semifinal justice.”

University, champion of the Pacific Coast League, went into the playoffs as the division’s top-seeded team. The Trojans beat Long Beach Poly 2-0 in the first round, Saddleback 4-0 in the second round and Artesia 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Wallwork’s critique of his team’s play Tuesday: players’ nerves stymied offensive flow in the first half, and the Trojans played to their abilities in the second half.

“That good ball movement, that’s our identity,” Wallwork said. “That’s what we’ve done all year long.”

Wrestling

Congratulations to Lorena Egea for placing 4th place at the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships last weekend.  Lorena has been bothered by a shoulder problem the last half of the season, otherwise we are convinced she would have been the State Champion.  Congratulations Lorena on a very successful season!
