Spring Sports Update

Baseball

Baseball is 7 and 2.  They lost a close game to Northwood 3-1 and ran into a hot CDM team on Tuesday and lost 13-5.  The U*N*I team plays at IHS on Friday, hosts WHS on Tuesday and completes the first round of PCL play with an away game at Beckman next Thursday.  The U*N*I team will play in the Ryan Lemmon Tournament over the Spring Break.

Boys Golf

We started league matches this week with Northwood yesterday at Oak Creek and CDM today at Strawberry Farms. Due to the music festival at Uni, we were shorthanded 2 of our staters Dylan Kurnnemann and Steven Li. We lost to to Northwood 192 to 181.  I am extremely proud of the team as they collectively played our best round even without the 2 starters. 192 is our best so far this year!  Freshman George Lu shot even par 35 for our best score. Today we match up against CDM at Strawberry Farms Golf Course. They return all but one player from last year’s talented team. But we are also better this year and will go for the win today!

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team played their first Pacific Coast League game versus Northwood on Monday.  The Trojans came out firing and pulled ahead early 6-3 with goals from Nick Khamseh, Oliver Kubit, Lucas Hall and Matt McCarthy, but the Timberwolves stormed back to tie the game. There would be 5 lead changes going into the 4th quarter. The game was very heated, both sides battling every possession. The Trojans had many Man-Up opportunities, due to NHS overzealous play, but came away with few points. This would prove to be the difference as the game would end 14-13.

Girls Lacrosse

Come out and support Girls Lacrosse tomorrow as they take on Yorba Linda.  Varsity plays at 4:00 p.m. in the Uni Stadium.  The JV game will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Uni Stadium.  Come out and watch these amazing girls!

Softball

The softball game scheduled with La Quinta high school today was unfortunately rained out.  The girls will be competing in the Katella tournament this Saturday.  They will be playing Loara High School at Loara at 9:00 a.m. and Santa Ana at Katella High School at 12:00 p.m.  Best of luck girls!

Boys Swimming

The Uni boys swim team is starting to hit their stride this season! They followed up a nice finish at the Capo Valley Relay Invitational two weekends ago with a close win over Santa Margarita at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Open Divisions. Yesterday, the Trojans opened up their season against Pacific Coast League opponents by handily defeating the CDM team 110 – 60! All relays featured stand-out swims from multiple members. Additionally, senior Aidan Yong, junior Aaron Lee, and sophomores Brian Lou and Caedon Ng had particularly impressive individual performances! The team will be prepping for a challenging match-up against their rival Northwood next week! Go Uni!

Girls Swimming

The girls swim team had two challenging meets this past week.  Last Thursday they swam against the four-time defending CIF-SS champions, Santa Margarita CHS, and yesterday in the GOW (or MOW) hosted Corona del Mar.

Although the defending champions prevailed, the Santa Margarita meet resulted in some fast times for Uni.  Season best times were recorded by sophomore Kate Weiland in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke, and by freshman Marta Meinardi in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, with a 3 second drop in the 500. Both sophomore Leila Mirsafian and senior tri-captain Anne Iwata had season best times in the 50 free, with Iwata also posting a season best in the 100 free.  Senior tri-captain Alondra Ortiz and freshman Isabella Pagano swam to season best times in the 100 fly, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Pagano, Iwata, Mirsafian and senior tri-captain Claire Jang lowered their CIF consideration time to 1:45.14.

Yesterday, in their first PCL meet against CDM, the girls lost a close one, 88-81, with the meet coming down to the last relay.  All 3 relays dropped significant amounts of time, with the 200 Medley relay of Ortiz, Weiland, Jang and Mirsafian dropping 2 full seconds to lower their CIF consideration time to 1:53.04, the 200 free relay of freshman Kristina Yan, Iwata, Mirsafian and Jang winning with a time of 1:45.02, and the 400 free relay of Ortiz, Weiland, K. Yan and Iwata dropping 2.5 seconds with a time of 3:55.44.   Weiland dropped her 200 IM time by 2 seconds and also her 100 breast time for two  new season bests,  Ortiz made her CIF consideration time in the 100 fly with a season best  1:00.69, freshman Lia Ciu dropped her 100 back time by more than 2 seconds, as did senior Yuuri Yoshikawa in the 100 breaststroke. Meinardi dropped her 500 time once again, and freshman Ira Chaturvedi had a 3.6 second drop in the 100 fly.  Many other swimmers had time improvements as well.

The team will travel to Northwood next Wednesday.

Come on out and support the swim team!  Good luck, girls!

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team started league play on Tuesday with a 14 to 4 win over Northwood.  Naevin Anukornchaikul won his two sets playing first singles.  Freshmen Rithvik Krishna also won two sets playing 3rd singles.  In doubles play, Patryk Kozlowski and Julian Lafond continued their incredible start to the season winning their two sets to remain undefeated.  And, Luis Moros and Cameron Sepahi spet their three sets at 2nd doubles.

The boys are the top ranked team in Orange County and the #1 team in CIF D-I.  Uni will also be the 2nd seeded team in the prestigious National All-American tournament taking place tomorrow and Saturday at the Uni courts and other local clubs.  16 teams will be competing from around the nation for the title that Uni has already won 3 times.

Track & Field

Girls track had another solid performance against Huntington Beach last week, despite a close loss. It was our last pre-season meet, and we are feeling prepared and looking forward to starting our actual season.  Collette Lowengrub and Avery Klauke once again finished 1-2 in the 1600. Daria Shkel continues to dominate the hurdle events, winning both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Sara Sussman and Vani Tanka finished 1-2 in the 400, and we swept the 800m (Sara Sussman, Collette Lowengrub, Abigail Sanders). Other top varsity contributors were Amber Sun, Sandy Zhang, Harini Venkataganesh and Jamie Kim.

We also competed at the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational this past weekend where Collette Lowengrub and Daria Shkel put up impressive performances among the best in Orange County. Lowengrub raced in the prestigious Eric Hulst 3200m and finished as the fastest freshman in the entire meet with a time of 11:28 over 8 laps. Shkel placed 3rd overall in the 100 hurdles and 4th overall in the 300 hurdles. We look forward to more exciting performances from these ladies.

Come support the girls this Thursday, 3/22 for our first PCL meet against Northwood on our home track. GO UNI!

We also won the 4 x 400. Our first league meet is set for Thursday against Northwood weather permitting. Go Trojan Tack!

Boys Volleyball

The Boys Volleyball team is off to a great start this season!  We won the Foothill Classic Varsity tournament last weekend and we are starting to hit our stride.  We took a tough loss to a very talented CDM team last night but the boys are ready to come back strong this Friday against Northwood.  With 12 very talented seniors on the team this year we have a very good shot of being one of the top teams in the league and I’m excited for what the rest of the season has in store.  Our first home league game is next week on Tuesday 3/27/18 against CDM and we would love to see you there!  Go Trojans!!
