Spring Sports Update

Baseball

U*N*I Baseball completes its 3 game series versus NHS this Friday at home, 3:30.  The U*N*I Team will host IHS next Tuesday at 3:30.

Boys Golf

The Boys Golf Team played the top 2 schools in our conference since the last update. We lost a heartbreaker to Northwood 195-193 at Strawberry Farms Golf Club last Thursday.  Connor O’Brien continued his strong performance with a par 36 and taking medalist honors.

Yesterday we lost to undefeated and twice defending league and CIF champion Woodbridge HS. It was one of our best as a team but Woodbridge shot only 4 over par 179 to our 189.  They had 4 players shooting par 35. But the medalist honor goes to our own, very talented freshman, George Lu. He shot an amazing 2 under par 33 at a very difficult back 9 of Strawberry Farms Golf Club.

Today, we look to bounce back against Irvine HS at home. Next Thursday 4/26 is our GOW (Game Of the Week). Come support our team!  Spectacular welcome. 1st tee time is 3pm!!

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boy’s Lacrosse team played Irvine HS Wednesday night at IHS stadium. It was a hard fought game from start to finish. Ultimately it would come down to the last possessions of the game and way the ball was handled. In the first meeting, the Trojans handed their opponents an 8 point loss, but in the second game, Irvine was hungrier. Nick Khamseh scored an amazing 7 goals and had 2 assists in the 12-10 loss. Nick has been a four year starter and holds the team record this year for points and needs 15 goals to pass Brian Cook to become the all-time scorer.

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse continues to have a fantastic season.  Returning from Spring Break, the girls suffered what is their biggest defeat so far this season, away to Beckman, 9-4.  However, the girls bounced back to win against Northwood (18-5) and Dana Hills (21-9).  The team carried that winning momentum into their second league match, away, against CdM.  Despite falling behind 3 goals to open the game, the girls bounced back to take a 6-5 lead at halftime.  The biggest lead Uni had was two goals, and they held on to that advantage to edge out CdM, for the first time in history, 8-7.  It was a phenomenal accomplishment and the girls were ecstatic.  To celebrate the Seniors, Uni played Irvine in a night match and cruised to an 18-3 victory.  With two matches remaining (Woodbridge and Beckman), the team looks poised to improve on last year’s finish and enter the post-season seeded 11th in the county.  What an amazing season!  If you see a player, please offer tem congratulations and come out and support them in their last two regular season matches next week.  Go Girls Lacrosse!

Softball

Come out to the Softball Fields to watch the girls take on Woodbridge at 3:30 today.  Best of luck girls!

Boys Swimming

The boys will be competing in the 46th Annual Foothill Games today at Foothill High School.  Best of luck boys!

Girls Swimming

The swim team travelled to Portola high school last Thursday for a non-league meet, and both Varsity (116-54) and JV (130-40) divisions were victorious. The JV girls won all their events, going 1,2,3 in 6 of them, and the Varsity won 9 out of 11 races; both divisions winning all 3 relays.  (Portola has only freshmen and sophomores being a new school, and there was no Open division). Leila Mirsafian swam the team’s fastest time of the season in the 200 free and a personal season best in the 100 free, Kate Weiland dropped 1.6 seconds for a season best to win the 200 IM and also won the 100 breaststroke, Clarie Jang won the 50 free with a season best time of 24.75, and won the 100 fly as well.  The 200 free relay team of Anne Iwata, Mirsafian, Isabella Pagano and Jang again lowered their CIF consideration time to 1:44.94. Alondra Ortiz won the 100 backstroke and Marta Meinardi dropped another 3 seconds in the 500 free after a big drop in the meet against Irvine the day before.

Yesterday was Senior Recognition Day at the last home meet of the season against Woodbridge, the defending PCL champs.   Seniors Anne Iwata, Claire Jang, Alondra Ortiz, Ashley Yang, Jessica Wong, Jennifer Tseng, and Mabel Guo were honored with candy leis and flowers during the meet. Varsity and JV fell to Woodbridge, but Uni did win the Open division. Highlights of the meet were Jang winning the 50 free, Ortiz winning the 500 free with a lifetime best time, and Marta Meinardi dropping 2 full seconds from her best time in the 200 IM.

Coming up this weekend the Varsity swimmers will be participating in the 46th Annual Foothill Swim Games hosted by Foothill HS in Tustin. Prelims for the girls are Friday afternoon with the top 16 in each event making it back to finals on Saturday.

Next week the team travels to Beckman for the last dual meet of the season.

Good luck, girls!

Katherine Loritz finished 12th in the county for the frosh/soph high jump, and Amber sun finished 16th in the varsity high jump. Harini Venkataganesh set a new personal best in the discus throwing 96’7’’. This week we resume our league competition with our GOW against Woodbridge on 4/19. Boys Track had no League Track meet last week but we had many boys participate in the OC Track and Field Championships. In the 100 , Faris Qaisi and Matt Tang, in the 200, Faris Qaisi, Matt Tang, Neel Chowdary and Lance Deolden, in the 400 Michael Blinstrub, in the 110 HH Ray Corpus and in the 4 x 400 relay Ethan Jenkins, Adam Gish, Neel Chowdary and Michael Blinstrub, in the High Jump Evan Pariser. This week is our GOW here at home against Woodbridge. Come out and support Uni Track and Field.

Boys Volleyball

The last couple of weeks have been hard for the UNI Boys’ Volleyball team.  We took a tough loss to Beckman last Friday and lost in 4 sets to a solid Northwood team on Tuesday.  With only 3 games left against Irvine, Woodbridge, and Beckman, we hope to better our league record as we close out the season.  This year’s team is full of talent and I still believe that we have a great chance to go far in the CIF tournament!!  Please come out and support our team on Tuesday April 24th at UNI against Irvine.  GO TROJANS!!!
