Spring Sports Update

U*N*I Baseball has it’s Game of the Week this Friday, 3:30, versus Woodbridge.  Senior Day is Tuesday, 5/8, versus Beckman HS.  The recognition of the Seniors will start at 3:00, with the game following at 3:30.  Come out and support!

Boys Golf

The boys golf team finished their regular season yesterday with a 2 day league finals held at Sky Links Golf Course in Long Beach.  Of the 6 Uni golfers, 3 made it into the second round.  The 1st day cut was only 6 over par of 78!  After 36 holes of golf, one Uni golfer qualified for Individual CIF – George Lu.  It’s an astounding accomplishment to be one of top 9 players in the toughest golf league in Orange County!  George finished tied for 4th place with a 3 over par 147 after 36 holes.  Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment.

Our veteran player, Connor O’Brien started the day tied for 2nd place after 1st day round of -2, 70.  He struggled down the stretch and finished with 78 and tied for 3 other Woodbridge players for the last 3 spots of the 9 qualifiers.  Connor lost in a sudden death playoff.  It’s a heart breaker but I know he will bounce back stronger next year!  He will lead our team into 1st round of Team CIF the week of May 14th!

Although we finished with a record of 3-14, our average score of 198 is good to place top 3 in any other league in the county!  We had many close matches this year and I am very proud of all our players.  Each and every one of them improved on their scoring averages!

Congrats to George Lu!

Boys Lacrosse

What an amazing display of Irvine talent at the OTC end of season tournament. Woodbridge finished 2nd in the Pacific Coast League and #18 overall, finishing the season with an OTC crown, defeating two time defending champ Northwood. What a great Irvine school district lacrosse season! #Irvinelacrosserising

University HS Boy’s lacrosse started off strong this season and had plans for a top finish in the league after posting their strongest winning season with 9 wins in 2017. Returning captain and 4 year starter Nick Khamseh lead all Uni scorers for the third straight season with a steady output every contest. Most teams would try to “shut-off” Nick, but he would still produce even under the toughest pressure. Many of the seniors experienced both the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory, with tough seasons their first years without a win to the ultimate, the best record ever, a true testament to their character.

As their coach I am so impressed and proud of the level of skill that the players have exhibited and the mark of that these players will leave on the program as it builds towards the future.

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse wrapped up an amazing season yesterday.  After completing season with an historic 13-3 record, the Lady Trojans were seeded 11th in the county, qualifying for the US Lacrosse post-season tournament for the second straight season.  Pitted against 6th place Aliso Niguel, the girls played a strong match.  After falling behind 5-1 in the opening four minutes of the game, the team re-grouped and re-organized their defensive play and went on a scoring streak to end the half, 7-5.  Taking advantage of a penalty against Aliso in the second half, the Lady Trojans scored three unanswered goals to take the lead, 8-7.  Although it didn’t last, it was a spectacular performance and one of which the team should be proud.  Ashley Chandler (Sr.) led the team with 5 goals, Mya Wang (Fr.) contributed 3, and Molly Pirus (Sr.), Makenzie Field (Jr.) and Grace Colunga (So.) rounded out the goals.  Gracelyn Caceros (Jr.) had an awesome night in goal, making 12 stops!  Though saddened to see the season draw to a close, the team had an amazing season, of which they are tremendously proud.  If you see a lacrosse player walking around, congratulate them on a remarkable year!

Congratulations to Softball for their win against Corona Del Mar on Tuesday.  The Trojans came out ahead 6-2.  The girls will be playing Irvine today (5/3) at home at 3:30 p.m.  Come out and support!

Boys Swimming

The Uni boys swim team started their League Finals yesterday with a strong showing at Prelims. Both the JV and Varsity levels will be shooting to finish in the top two in at League Finals, aspiring to catch Northwood, and hold off CDM. In the sprint freestyle events, Senior Max Tello, Junior Aaron Lee, and Sophomores Kai Yoshizaki and Brian Lou positioned themselves to place high in Friday’s Finals. In the middle-distance freestyle events, Senior Aidan Yong and Sophomore Caedon Ng placed top 3 in Prelims, and will look to upset Northwood’s top qualifier. The Uni Varsity 200 Free Relay has already posted a time that is under the Pacific Coast League record that we set last year, and we will look to claim the new record on Friday.

The Open boys division closed up yesterday with a strong 2nd place finish overall! Most of the swimmers on this roster put down lifetime bests, and were highly competitive for taking home the championship. Sophomores Daniel Jin and Larry Tsao, and freshmen Hayden Shulman and Pravir Gurukar all had strong top-6 performances in their individual events.

Girls Swimming

The girls swim team is competing in the Pacific Coast League Championship meet this week.  Prelims for Varsity and JV and Championship Finals for the Open division took place Tuesday at the Wollette Aquatic Center near Irvine High.  The Open girls finished in 4th place in their division.  Many Open division swimmers had best times and scored points for their team.

The top 16 JV and Varsity swimmers in each event will compete again in finals this Friday.  Uni goes into finals with 21 individual Varsity top 16 qualifying swims, and 13 in the JV division.   Senior Captains Alondra Ortiz ( 6th, 100 fly and 100 back)  and Claire Jang ( 3rd, 50 free, 7th, 100 fly)  both qualified in the top 8 in both of their individual events and Sophomores Kate Weiland (6th)and Danica Wong (8th) both qualified in the top 8 in breaststroke, with junior Yuuri Yoshikawa finishing in 11th place. Weilan also qualified 9th n the 200 IM with freshman Kristina Yan 16th in that same event.   Freshman Marta Meinardi qualified 13th in the 200 IM and was 9th (with a 2 second time drop) in the 500 free, with Sophomore Savanna Cruz (10th, with a 2.5 second drop), and freshman Lia Cui (12th) and Chloe Johansson (13th) also making finals in that distance event.  Cruz (14th) and Johansson (16th, with a 2.3 second drop) also will be returning for finals in the 200 free.   Freshman Isabella Pagano (11th, 50 free and 11th, 100 fly) will be returning for finals with season best times in both those events.  Sophomore Leila Mirsafian returns in both the 50 free (11th) and 100 free (9th), and junior Sarah Sharifi (15th, with a 1.2 second time drop) also returns in the 100 free.

All relays will be contested on Friday.   Friday will also be the swimmers last chance to make CIF cuts in preparation for the CIF-SS Division I prelims and finals next week.  Good Luck Girls!

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team finished the regular season with a 12 to 6 win over CdM on Tuesday.  Sophomores Soomin Lee and Cameron Sepahi led the way with a sweep at doubles.  The win moved the boys to 10 and 0 in Pacific Coast League play and 21 -1 overall.  The boys have now won 118 league matches in a row spanning 12 years.  The last time the boys lost a league match was in April 2006.  With 5 PCL teams consistently in the CIF D-I top ten, this is an incredible accomplishment.

In the PCL individual tournament finishing today, senior Naevin Anukornchaikul (Johns Hopkins) advanced to the semi-final round in singles while seniors Patryk Kozlowski (Cal Tech) and Julian Lafond advanced in doubles.  CIF team playoffs begin next Wednesday.

Track & Field

These girls include Collette Lowengrub, Sara Sussman and Avery Klauke in the distance events, Daria Shkel in the hurdles, Harini Venkataganesh in the throws, and our girls 4x100m relay team of Daria Shkel, Lauryn Wood, Leyna Wood and Rovinya Ruhunage.  Come out on Friday evening to support to these girls and to watch some exciting races!
