Cross Country

Girls Cross Country had some impressive performances at the Dana Hills Invitational this past weekend. Collette Lowengrub and Avery Klauke ran in the Invitational section among the fastest runners in Orange County. They both ran personal best times of 17:41 (Lowengrub) and 18:00 (Klauke). These were the #10 and #24 fastest times of the entire weekend. Our top seven also included Marta Meinardi, Roseanne Yu, Amberley Martinez, Gwen Sanders, and Reyya Kocagil. This weekend our Varsity team will be competing at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. GO UNI XC!

Boys Cross Country saw some more major improvements at the Dana Hills Cross Country Invitational this last weekend. Our Top runner, Ryan Duffy , had another PR with a time of 15:41 which gets him that much closer to the Uni top 25 All Time list. Also having outstanding performances included Raja Batra, Michael Blinstrub, Adam Gish, Dylan Muniz, Abhi Nisha Anish, Chris Lohmeyer, Ethan Jenkins. This next weekend the boys varsity will also be joining the girls team to compete in Palo Alto at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational. The race can be viewed on Prepcaltrack.com and we are racing Division 1 with boys race at 11am and the girls at 11:30am. Go Trojan Running!

Football

The Trojans will be taking on the Timberwolves tomorrow night in the Uni Stadium for the Homecoming game.  Game starts at 7:00 p.m.  Come out and support and enjoy the Homecoming festivities!

Girls Golf

The girl’s golf team had a productive week as we continue to strive for a PCL title. We beat Woodbridge last Thursday at Rancho San Joaquin, 183 – 193.  Our top two scores came from Alexis Kim, 32, and Nodoka Honda, 34. Dana Choi contributed a one over par 37. Then, on Tuesday this week we topped Beckman 180-188. Both teams played well. We shot an even par 180 as a team, our best team score this season. Beckman also had their best score of the year.  As for Uni, Alexis Kim and Nodoka Honda were 2-under par and Dana Choi shot an even par score of 36. Emily Tao recorded a 37 and Emy Zhu contributed with a 39. This was a great team effort! These two matches gave us a league record of 6-0. We have 4 league matches remaining.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team moved to 7 and 0 on the season, 2-0 in the Pacific Coast League, with a 15 to 3 win over Portola high.  The top ranked team in CIF Division one was led by freshmen Arya Ramalingam who swept her three singles matches including a 6-4 win over Portola’s #1 player.  The girls will be in action today against Irvine high at the Uni courts.

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team had a heart stopping match on Tuesday against Northwood to solidify their spot in the CIF playoffs for the first time in nine years. The Trojans went 5 sets in a match that was so tight that it could have gone either way. The girls came together knowing what was on the line and played strong to finish off Northwood on their senior night. The program, which has won more matches this year than in years past, also has a very strong F/S and JV team. Tonight is the team’s senior night, it will be a very good match as Portola rolls into the gym and the Trojans need to continue to win to keep this playoff birth alive.

Boys Water Polo

The Boys Water Polo team plays at home today in a league match against Irvine High.  Frosh/Soph plays at 3:15, Varsity plays at 4:00 and JV follows at 5:00.  Come out to the pool this afternoon and cheer on the Trojans as they take on the Vaqueros.

Girls Golf

The University girl’s golf team won two league matches since last week. Last Thursday we beat Portola 172-182. Nodoka Honda was the match medalist (low score).  This past Tuesday we beat Irvine 190-227 at Strawberry Farms. Again, Nodoka Honda posted a low score of 35. Alexis Kim came in at even par 36 and Dana Choi 38.  Also, senior Dana Choi committed this past week to play golf at Division 1 Georgetown.  She’s excited about making that decision. Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team is on a run!  Last Thursday the girls defeated Campbell Hall 10 to 8 in a match at the Racquet Club of Irvine.  The Vikings came into the match as the #1 team in Division 1.  At that time the Trojans were the 6th ranked team.  Sophomores Emily Markus and Mya Wang swept at first doubles for Uni and Therese Garcia and freshmen Megan Bee won 2 of 3 sets at third doubles.  Cami Brown also won 2 of 3 sets playing first singles.  Ranked #1 in the new CIF D-I poll Monday morning the girls then defeated #4 CdM 11-7 on Tuesday.  Cami Brown swept at first singles and Freshmen Jane Lee won 2 of 3 sets at third singles.  Mya Wang and Emily Markus continued their great start to the season sweeping all 3 sets at first doubles.  The top ranked Trojans will be in action today against Northwood at the Uni courts.

IRVINE – The two best girls tennis teams in Orange County squared off Tuesday for bragging rights and important footing in the CIF-SS Division 1 rankings.

University made sure the drama at the Racquet Club of Irvine didn’t last long.

The Trojans used a fast start and well-balanced lineup at singles and doubles to post an 11-7 victory against reigning CIF-SS Division 1 champion Corona del Mar in a duel of former Pacific Coast League rivals.

University (5-0), which moved this week to No. 1 in the Division 1 poll after a 10-8 victory last week against Campbell Hall, beat No. 5 Corona del Mar (3-1) for the first time since 2014.

“It’s huge for our team and our school,” said Trojans junior Cami Brown, who swept at No. 1 singles. “We have a huge rivalry with them. … Last year, they were really happy they beat us.”

Corona del Mar handled University three times last season, including 13-5 in the Division 1 final, en route to an undefeated season.

But Corona del Mar sent three players from its 2017 team – county player of the year Danielle Willson (USC), Annika Bassey (Harvard) and Paulina Loredo (Rhode Island) – to the college ranks.

Brown leads University’s returners and swept 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 against Corona del Mar’s talented trio of UC Davis-committed Kristina Evloeva, Roxy MacKenzie and newcomer Janie Marcus.

Brown also has more help this fall with the addition of freshman Jane Lee. Brown and Lee both won in the first round as the Trojans opened a 5-1 lead. Lee defeated Marcus 6-4 and MacKenzie 6-0 before falling to Evloeva 6-3.

“Jane Lee at singles has added a big dimension,” University coach John Kessler said.

The Trojans’ doubles were again led by the consistent duo of sophomores Mya Wang and Emily Markus, who swept 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. The Trojans’ No. 3 doubles of sophomore Therese Garcia and freshman Megan Bee won two of three matches, pushing Corona del Mar’s top team Shaya Northup and Bella McKinney in a 6-4 loss.

“We did a good job competing,” Sea Kings coach Jamie Gresh said. “(University) is just a little bit sharper and little bit better at all spots across the board. … They belong to be No. 1 for sure.”

Names: Mya Wang and Emily Markus

School: University

Sport: Girls tennis

Noteworthy: The sophomores swept at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 to help the Trojans post a 10-8 victory against Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, then the top-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1. “They got the three (points) for us that we needed,” University coach John Kessler said of the duo. “They’re just solid. They take chances, they move around the court well.”

University’s girls tennis team shook up CIF-Southern Section Division 1 on Thursday.

The Trojans played host to top-ranked Campbell Hall of North Hollywood and collected a 10-8 victory in a nonleague match at Racquet Club of Irvine.

University All-County singles player Cami Brown won two of her three matches but the Trojans did most of their damage in doubles.

The team of Emily Markus and Mya Wang swept 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 while the partners Kamar Alajeely-Jackie Yoon and Therese Garcia-Megan Bee each won two of three matches. University outscored Campbell Hall, 7-2 in doubles.

Senior Dominique Stone swept at No. 1 singles for Campbell Hall.

University entered the match ranked sixth in Division 1 but the victory stood out for another reason.

Campbell Hall earlier posted an 11-7 victory against Corona del Mar, Orange County’s top-ranked team and the reigning CIF-SS Division 1 champion.

University and Corona del Mar’s scores against Campbell Hall add considerable drama for Tuesday, Sept. 18 when the Trojans play host to Sea Kings in the teams’ nonleague match at Racquet Club of Irvine.

Last season, Corona del Mar beat University for the CIF-SS Division 1 title and twice in the Pacific Coast League. Corona del Mar now resides in the Sunset League while University remains in the PCL.

he victory Thursday capped an impressive week for the Trojans, who also beat Dana Hills 13-5. In that match, Lee defeated Air Force-bound Courtney Swift of the Dolphins, 6-4.

University also plays Northwood on Thursday, Sept. 20 in a key league match.

Girls Volleyball

The girls continue to play solid Volleyball, making it to 5 sets against Division 1 Woodbridge last Tuesday.  The Trojans beat out the Warriors in sets 3 & 4 but lost the 5th set.  The girls take on Beckman at home today, Thursday, Sept. 20.  Come out and cheer them on!

Boys Water Polo

The Varsity boys are travelling to Ocean View High School for a 2 day tournament Friday and Saturday.  Their first game is at 2:55 on Friday.  Next week they will be playing Northwood at Home on Monday, 9/24 and will be away at Portola on Tuesday, 9/25.  Come out and support!

Girls Golf

We began the Pacific Coast League season last Tuesday against Northwood. We won that match 185-226. Our lowest scorer was Lexi Kim with a 1-under par 35 at Strawberry Farms Golf Course. Tuesday, we beat Irvine to improve our league record to 2-0 by a score of 188-233. Nodoka Honda shot a 1-under 34 at Oak Creek Golf Club. We completed a long week with a third match against both Troy and Diamond Bar at western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills. This was a non-league tri-match versus two of the top teams in the state.  We finished as the third team in this contest, but it was a very competitive match played at an extremely difficult golf course. Dana Choi came in with an impressive 1-over par 36. It was a good character builder for as and showed us where we need to improve.

Lexi Kim shows she can lead way for University girls golf team

By DAMIAN V. DOTTORE |
PUBLISHED: September 4, 2018 at 9:50 pm | UPDATED: September 4, 2018 at 9:50 pm

IRVINE – Lexi Kim has been one of the most consistent players on the University High girls golf team, regularly stringing together a bunch of pars during her rounds.

One thing always seemed to be missing for her: birdies.

“She has always been very stable, but late last season she seemed to catch the bug that playing golf and competing is fun,” University coach Kevin Kasper said. “She played a lot of golf during the summer. Now she has that potential to go under par.”

Tuesday at Strawberry Farms golf course, Kim birdied the opening hole and went on to have a bogey-free round of 1-under-par 35 to lead the defending CIF State champion Trojans to a 185-226 victory against Pacific Coast League rival Northwood.

Nodoka Honda and Dana Choi added even-par 36s as Uni finished 5-over-par as a team.

“It feels great (to come back after winning state), and we have the potential to do well again,” Kasper said. “The new girls are going to have to play consistent golf for us.”

Kasper was referring to senior Emy Zhu and junior Emily Tao, who both entered the varsity lineup this season. Both golfers finished with a 39 for the Trojans (3-2) on Tuesday.

Michelle Du led the Timberwolves (0-2) with a 38.

It was the third time this season that all five of Uni’s scoring players broke 40 and the second time in five matches the Trojans finished in the 180s.

They recently posted a 183 in a three-stroke loss to Troy at Strawberry Farms.

The Trojans will get a rematch with a Warriors on Thursday in a tri-match at Western Hills Country Club that will include Diamond Bar.

“I think some of that might have been part of that Troy match, like here we are we are going to get our revenge,” Kasper aid.

Troy finished second to Uni in the state championship last season.

“We usually never get to play Troy head-to-head. We only face them in tournaments,” Kasper said, “and it was nice to let the girls see each other and each other’s game. A match like that helps teach the new girls how good some of the players are.

“As a team, we treat each year differently, and to have success, they are going to show that they can be consistent.”

Girls Tennis

The Uni girls tennis team won their 3rd straight match to kick off the 2018 season.  The 2nd ranked Trojans defeated Dana Hills 13 to 5.  Freshmen Jane Lee defeated Dana’s #1 player 6-4 in singles.  Lee was impressive in defeating the senior player who has already committed to the Air Force Academy.  Sophomores Mya Wang and Emily Markus picked up right where they left off last season with another sweep at first doubles.  Last year the girls were selected to the All-Orange County team as freshmen!  Sophomore Therese Garcia and freshmen Megan Bee, playing in her first varsity match, won both sets they played at doubles.  The girls will be in action today at the Racquet Club of Irvine against Campbell Hall, the top ranked team in CIF D-1.  The Uni girls defeated C. Hall in last year’s quarter-final match.

Our own Cami Brown was named one of the top 7 players to watch this season by OC Varsity!  Check out the article below:
