Welcome to Trojan Thursday – So what exactly is Trojan Thursday? Announcements

Congrats to Cami Brown!  Cami was named the OC Register’s female tennis player of the year.  It is the first time in school history that a member of the girl’s team has won this award!  Cami was also chosen to be a part of the First team, “All Orange County Tennis Team” for singles.  Sophomores Emily Markus and Maya Wang were named to the First team, “All Orange County Tennis Team” in doubles.  Finally, freshmen Jane Lee was named to the First team, “All Orange County team”, for singles.  We are very proud of these girls and all of our players for an incredible year!

Football – We are sad to announce that our Head Football Coach, Scott Meyer, will be leaving University at the end of January to be the head coach at Lakewood High School.  Our administrative team has begun the search for a new head coach and is looking to swiftly fill the position with the best candidate possible.

Upcoming Try-outs

Athletes must have “Cleared” status for the 2018-19 school year on www.athleticclearance.com in order to participate in try-outs.  Attend all dates listed unless otherwise stated.

Boys Golf:  Week of Jan. 7 @ Strawberry Farms Golf Course.  First round is Monday, Jan. 7 @ 3:00 p.m.   Try-out for Winter Sport Athletes will be Saturday, Jan. 12.  Anyone interested in attending must RSVP to charlesshea@iusd.org no later than Monday, Jan. 7th.  This try-out is only for students currently participating in a winter sport (Boys Basketball, Boys Soccer or Wrestling).

Boys Volleyball: Tuesday, Jan. 8, 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the Uni Gym.

Boys Lacrosse: Wednesday, Jan. 9, 3pm – 5pm on the grass field

Boys Tennis: Monday, Jan. 17, after school at the tennis courts

Boys Basketball

Tonight the boys varsity basketball team takes on Irvine in an important Pacific Coast League contest at 7:00 p.m. in the gym.  Tuesday, the boys dropped the opening game of league play 70 – 57 to Northwood.  Junior guard Will Stenta paced the Trojans with 21 points.  Last week Uni won three games in the Gary Raya/So Cal Elite Tournament defeating San Clemente in overtime, El Dorado and posted a 25 point win over Woodbridge.

Will Stenta and sophomore guard Kody Uyesugi were both named to the all-tournament team. Over Christmas break the Trojans will participate in the Tustin Tournament.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Trojan Basketball team came away with a second place finish in the Villa Park Tournament.  They opened league play Tuesday night with a win over Northwood.  Without their two star players Malia Goldsmith and Claire Kawata, due to injuries, the rest of the team stepped up and grabbed the victory over the Timberwolves.  Aryn Press led all scores with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 8 blocked shots.  Neeyaz Cyrus added 9 points.  Thursday they will take on Irvine High at home at 5:30pm.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer continued its winning ways last week with a 1-0 win over Brea Olinda . The goal was scored by Lee McEligot, his 5th of the year, and was assisted by Sebastian Hertel, his 4th assist in 2 games . Sean Salah with the shutout in goal.

League began yesterday at Northwood and ground out another 1-0 win. Pedro Palmaka with his 8th goal of the year and Giorgio Conta with the assist, his 7th. Record now stands at 7-1-1.

We are at Irvine on Thursday (12/20) to continue league play.  Varsity game at 5:00 p.m.

Girls Soccer

Girls soccer had a tough match against Northwood Tuesday night losing 3-2. It was a great battle and our first league match. Come out and support the Girls JV game at 3:15pm followed by the Girls Varsity game at 5:00pm in the stadium under the lights against Irvine Thursday.

Girls Water Polo

Girls Water Polo defeated Irvine 7-5 last Thursday and then went on to beat Northwood at home on Tuesday with a final score of 7-6.  The girls will be taking on Irvine at home today at 4:00 p.m.  Come out and support!

Wrestling

The Uni Wrestling team will be back at it after the break on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Woodbridge.  Varsity wrestling starts at 5:00 p.m.

Boys Basketball

Last night the Trojans defeated San Clemente 83 – 81 on a buzzer beater in overtime by Noah Small to improve their record to 7 – 5.  Kody Uyesugi led the way with 27 points and Andrea Roy scored 15 to pace University.  Sam Aryan scored eleven points and grabbed eight rebounds while Arjun Gill had a double with ten points and ten assists.  Last Saturday the Trojans lost to highly ranked Newport Harbor in the finals of the St. Margaret’s Tournament.  The Gary Raya/SoCal Elite Tournament the Trojans are currently playing in continues Friday with the Trojans playing at El Dorado at 5:30.  Saturday, Uni will take on Woodbridge at Woodbridge.  Game time is 1:30.  Pacific Coast League games start next week with home games on Tuesday and Thursday.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Trojan Basketball team pulled out an amazing victory of Aliso Niguel (top ten team in county) on Friday night.  This was a huge win over a very tough team.  Malia Goldsmith led all scores with 10 points in the 30-29 victory.  The girls team then entered into the Villa Park Tournament this week and had wins over Pacifica and Terry Fox (British Columbia).  Tonight they are in the semifinals vs Trabuco Hills.

Boys Soccer

Boys won 3-2 yesterday against Capo. We were down 2-0 with 15 minutes to play and turned it around.   All 3 goals by captain Pedro Palmaka and all 3 assists by Sebastian Hertel.  Boys Soccer improves to 5-1-1 and play Brea Olinda at home on Friday, Dec. 14.

Girls Soccer

Girls soccer had a fun GOW on Tuesday with free Tacos and a nice crowd. We tied Orange Lutheran 1-1. This Thursday (Dec. 13), we have a home game at 3:15pm taking on Godinez. Come out and support the girls.

Girls Water Polo

Girls water polo is travelling to the Wollett Aquatics Center today for their first league match of the season against Irvine.  Game times are 3:15 (Frosh/Soph), 4:00 (Varsity), and 5:00 (JV).  Best of luck to the team!

Wrestling

Varsity Wrestling defeated Portola, 72-12 and JV won 76-4 at their league dual on Wednesday.   Last weekend, the FS team had a tournament at Capo Valley High.  Zach Haughey won the tournament and Philip Xiu received 3rd place.

Boys Basketball

Last night the Boys Varsity basketball team overcame a six point halftime time deficit and rolled to a 97 – 67 win over Saddleback Valley Christian for their second straight win at the St. Margaret’s Tournament.  Senior guard Andrea Roy led the way with 25 points while sophomore guard Kody Uyesugi added 21 points to go along with seven assists.  Junior guard Will Stenta had a great game with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

The boy’s record currently stands at 5 – 3.  The guys play San Juan Hills in the semifinals Friday at 5:00 with the winner facing Newport harbor Saturday at 6:00.  Uyesugi is currently the leading scorer and top three point shooter in Orange County while Roy is second in the county in three pointers made.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Trojan basketball team is off to a great start winning the Norco Tournament.  Claire Kawata was named All tournament and Malia Goldsmith was named the MVP of the tournament.  Last week the girls hosted a tournament and had some tough games, losing one in Overtime and one at the buzzer.  Malia Goldsmith was named to that All-tournament team.  The girls are currently 6-3 and play Tustin and Aliso Niguel this week.  The next home game is Friday Dec 7th at 7pm vs Aliso.

Boys Soccer

Boys Soccer is off to a great start.  They have defeated Santiago of Garden Grove, Cypress, Huntington Beach, and San Juan Hills.  The boys will play at home on Monday, Dec. 10 against Lakewood at 3:15.   Come out and support!

Girls Soccer

Girls Soccer has a game this Thursday rain or shine against Capo at 3:15pm. Please come out and support the team.  This Saturday the girls will play in the Newport Harbor Tournament. Come watch some amazing soccer. Games are 8am and 11am.

Girls Water Polo

University Girls Water Polo is off to a great start.  Leading the charge are it’s 6 returning seniors all making large contributions to a 4-0 start to the season.  The team is also growing, showing larger numbers than last year, and the girls are quickly becoming good friends.  This upcoming weekend the Varsity team travels to Irvine high school for the El Nino tournament, while the JV will travel to Anaheim to compete in the Western tournament.  If you have a chance to see a water polo player, please wish them good luck.

Wrestling

The varsity team competed at the Corona Del Mar Wrestling Tournament last Saturday, Dec. 1st.

Ethan Chin and Justin Andre went undefeated; Dylan Ohashi and Haruta Ishizuka went 4-1 and earned all-tourney team awards.  The team got 3rd out of 24 teams.  Wrestling defeated Northwood 78-3 in the varsity level in their first league dual meet of the season. This Saturday, the Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams will be travelling to Capo Valley High school for a tournament.
