Spring Sports Update

Check out this link to the Sports Section of the Sword & Shield for sports articles written by Uni Students:

Uni baseball went 0-2 last week. With a 13-4 loss to Irvine and a 9-0 loss to Woodbridge. Uni JV had a strong week with wins against Irvine 2-0 and Woodbridge 8-2. They also tied Irvine last Friday 3-3 so they were 2-0-1 on the week.  Baseball GOW is tomorrow, March 15th, come out and support the team as they take on Beckman at 3:30 at the Uni Baseball field.

Boys Golf

We completed our final tune up before the start of league play with a win against Huntington Beach at home with a score of 191 to 197.  We were led by Sophomore George Lu who shot even par 36.  This is impressive because he started out with 4 over par after 4 holes.  George finished strong with 4 birdies in 5 holes to take low medal honors!  Senior Connor O’Brien, out all last week due to illness, finished with 38.  Steven Li finished with a birdie to card 39 and newcomers, Junior John Stapakis and Freshman George Huang finished 40 and 38 respectively.

I was impressed with the resilience of the team.  No one played exceptionally well but after poor starts all around, the team finished with 10 birdies, all during the last 5 holes, to pull off this impressive win.

Next week we start league play against Northwood at home at Strawberry Farms.  We then travel to Portola on Thursday.  We are looking for strong performances all around.

Go Trojans!!

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boys Varsity Lacrosse team evened their non league record to 2-2, with a dominant performance, a 19-4 win, over the Tustin Tillers.

The Tillers showed up with numbers, but the Trojans were undaunted. From start to finish the Trojans were in control, with exemplary play by face off specialist Ethan Doan, the time of possession favored Uni all game.

Many players scored as the Trojans executed play after offensive play with great team chemistry.  Overall it was a great effort.

Come support the Trojans at their first league game Monday at Northwood! Go Trojans!

Girls Lacrosse

The Girls Lacrosse program had a week of ups and downs.  The team played a tough game against a hardworking Yorba Linda squad, but ended up losing 15-14.  Despite missing 8 players from the Varsity roster, the team hung in for the entirety of the 50 minutes exchanging goals back and forth.  Mya Wang (So.) ended up netting 11 of those 14 goals!  What an absolutely amazing individual effort!  The team bounced back from that game and defeated Mission Viejo 16-5 yesterday (3/13).  Junior goalie Madison Beltran allowed only two goals and earned five saves on the night to keep Mission Viejo from mounting a comeback.  Some solid stickwork all around the field helped the girls stay predominantly in the offensive third of the field.  The team has a really tough game against El Dorado on Friday, 4:00 PM, in the Trojan Stadium, so please come out and support.  League play kicks off next week, so the girls could use all the support the Trojan Army can muster this Friday to send them off to League in style!

Uni Softball takes on La Quinta at home today (March 14th) at 3:15.  Come out and support!

Boys Swimming

This week, the Uni Boys Swim Team dueled cross-town rivals and defending state champion Northwood, and came out convincingly victorious by a score of 99-71!  Leading the team by winning both of their individual events were junior Brian Lou (100 Freestyle and 200 IM), and senior Aaron Lee (50 Freestyle and 100 Fly).  Also contributing significantly by winning one individual event were junior Hunter Kroll (500 Free), junior Sidney Miller (100 Back), and freshman Matthew Lou (100 Breast).  Additionally, the team came together to win all three relays, gaining CIF qualification times in all three!  The Uni Swim TEam will be preparing for Tuesday’s match-up with one of the strongest teams in the county, Santa Margarita.  Go Trojans!

Girls Swimming

Northwood High School visited UNI yesterday to open the league swim season, and the Varsity Girls gave them a great deal to think about. Both the A and B Medley 200 Medley Relay Teams posted CIF consideration times to start the meet. Later, the A 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay also posted consideration times. Several girls posted impressive individual times as well.  Alex Lindenberg dropped 2 seconds in her 200 Freestyle to win the event. Isabella Pagano dropped nearly a half-second in the 100 butterfly, closing in on a CIF consideration time. Alex Lindenberg and Jean Meyer both scored personal bests in the 100 Backstroke. Mirabella Levine touched out her Northwood opponent at the wall to win the 100 Breaststroke, claiming a CIF consideration time in the process. The varsity girls demonstrated intense commitment and great promise; it figures to be a great season.

IRVINE – University sophomore tennis player Rithvik Krishna defeated an opponent on Tuesday that he respectfully called a “beast.”

But after the Trojans’ dominating performance against visiting Northwood and newcomer Harry Yang, University showed it’s still the most dangerous team in the Pacific Coast League.

Even when not at full strength.

Playing without ace Aditya Gupta, the top-ranked Trojans still swept the six first-round sets en route to a 15-3 victory against the No. 2 Timberwolves, extending their remarkable league winning streak to 120 matches.

“Six-zero in the first round was pretty unexpected, to be honest,” veteran University coach John Kessler said. “(Northwood coach) John (Tichy) does a great job and Northwood is a really good team. They’ve had impressive scores.”

Last week, Northwood (7-1, 1-1) beat former league rival Corona del Mar 11-7 in a statement victory that places the Timberwolves, ranked No. 6 in Division 1, in the conversation for the Open Division playoffs.

University (8-0, 2-0), ranked No. 1 in the county and Division 1, moved Krishna to No. 1 singles to replace Gupta, who was a playing a Futures challenger event, and he responded by defeating the 6-foot-6 Yang, a senior bound for Georgetown.

Krishna used a strong serve and aggressive forehand against Yang’s slice shots for a 6-4 victory.

“He’s 6-foot-6, bombs serves every now and then,” said Krishna, who stands about 5-foot-9. “I played straight up (without strategy changes), but I had to try to grind him out because he’s really big. It’s kind of tough to grind out a 6-foot-6 beast, but I did it today. I don’t think he was at his very best.”

Krishna went 2-0 in singles before being substituted in the third round.

Yang, who had been home-schooled until this year, beat University’s No. 2 Soomin Lee 6-4 in the second round, but Lee and fellow junior Cameron Sepahi each beat Trojans’ No. 2 Cory Pham.

University also received sweeps at doubles from its top team of freshman Conrad Brown and senior Luis Moros and the No. 2 team of senior Michael Rudin and freshman Zino Mirtorabi.

“Sometimes you play better when your main guy is not (there) – sometimes you look for that person to carry you,” Kessler said. “(But) we haven’t lost (in league) since 2006. … Just think about how insane this is because all these teams are good in their own right.”

Track & Field

Boys Track and Field had their last preseason meet last week against Huntington Beach. The team was missing all of our seniors due to the senior activity day but we still had some great performances. All boys relays beat HB and other top performers included Adam Gish in the 1600, Henry Feurborn and Ben Chi in the 110 High Hurdles, Michael Blinstrub in the 400, Lance Deolden in the 100 and 200, Michael Blinstrub and Adam Gish in the 800, Ben Chi and Henry Feurborn in the 300 Hurdles, Raja Batra in the 3200, Noah Powell in the Shot and Disc and Daniel Hernandez in the Long Jump. Today (March 14th) we have our first league meet here at Uni against Northwood. Come out and support! Go Trojan track and Field!

Last week we had our final preseason meet against Huntington Beach High School. We were missing a few of our Varsity athletes due to Senior Activity Day, but many of the girls stepped up and had some great performances! Our girls 4X100 M relay won their race. We swept the 1600 M with Collette Lowengrub, Cece Langlois, and Avery Klauke taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Sophomores Vani Tankha and Laura Li took 2nd and 3rd in the 400 M run. Freshman Jenna Kim placed 2nd in the 100 M and 200 M.  Collette Lowengrub and Avery Klauke also took 1st and 2nd in the 800 M.  Cece Langlois took 1st in the 3200 M, Dena Norouzi took 2nd in the discus, and Farimah Fanaei took 1st in the long jump.
