Today we head to San Juan Hills in San Juan Capistrano for an away match against Portola HS.  This is the first year with Portola joining the Pacific Coast League. We are looking forward to hopefully receiving our 3rd straight win!

Boys Lacrosse

Boys Lacrosse heads to Irvine for a 6:00 PM game on Monday, March 25th.  Best of luck to the team!

Girls Lacrosse

Girls Lacrosse is off to an undefeated beginning in League play.  Facing off against Northwood on Monday, the Lady Trojans played a back and forth opening five minutes where the score stayed close (2-2) before establishing control of the game.  Eight different players found the back of the net as Uni cruised to a 17-5 win.  Mya Wang (So.), Makenzie Kaufman (Jr.), and Grace Colunga (Jr.) each scored three and Kaylor
Chott (Sr.) provided five assists and added a goal of her own.  Goalie Gracelyn Caceros (Sr.) snagged two interceptions from the crease and made four saves on the night.

This performance was followed by an away match against the newest member of Irvine, the Portola Bulldogs.  The experience University possesses shined through in this match against a team in only their second season, first as a Varsity program.  Uni led 11-0 at the end of the first half, and concluded the game 18-1.  Goalie Madison Beltran (Jr.) was forced into five saves to keep Portola on the single goal.  Nine different field players scored, including senior Mackenzie Field, who returned to the field after enduring a concussion received during pre-season.   Wang led the team with a total of five goals.  Senior defender Donia Mohtashami picked off two passes.  All around, it was a convincing win.

The team plays a non-league match against Esperanza today and returns to league play on Monday (March 25), facing off against Irvine HS in an away match.

Uni Softball heads to Portola this Thursday (March 21) for a league game.  This Saturday, March 23, the team will play a double header at Corona Del Mar.  First game starts at 9:00 AM.  Come out and support the team!

Boys Swimming

The Uni boys swim and dive team had a phenomenal week! First, they upset second-ranked Santa Margarita on Tuesday, 90-80. This was achieved through a strong team effort, with strong contributions throughout the lineup.  Obtaining first place finishes in at least one individual event were Caedon Ng, Brian Lou, Aaron Lee, and Matthew Lou.  Matthew Lou, a freshman swimming on the Varsity team, also achieved his first CIF consideration cut in his 100 breaststroke! On Wednesday, the team traveled to Portola for their second league meet of the season. The Uni boys swept Portola at all levels, and recorded personal records in over half of their events. Swimming particularly well were juniors Sidney Miller, Hunter Kroll, and Brian Lou. Miller achieved his first CIF cut of the year in the 100 backstroke, with a winning time of 55.13. Kroll was victorious in both the 500 free and the 200 IM. His speedy finish in the 200 IM gained him his second CIF consideration cut of the year in 1:59.37. Lou dominated both of his individual events, gaining CIF automatic cuts in the 50 free and the 100 fly. In the 50 free, he broke the all-time Uni school record from 2014 by 0.01 seconds, recording a time of 20.70. This time is bound to get faster, and it will be exciting to see what he can do as we move into the championship season! Come out and support the Uni Swim Team on Wednesday 3/27 when they face league opponent Irvine!

Girls Swimming

Swimming is a difficult sport, and competing in the densest concentration of young talent in the world makes it even tougher. This week, the Trojans experienced the intense highs and lows of tough competition.

UNI’s swimmers went on the road twice this week, and the away meets presented tough challenges for our ambitious Varsity girls. On Tuesday, the water at Santa Margarita was thick and sticky, at least in UNI’s lanes. The Trojans swam with dignity, but were unable to win any of the events, and personal bests were in short supply—although the A relays in both the 200 and 400 Freestyle were able to score consideration times for CIF. Overall, however, the day was one of battling wakes. But when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and the UNI girls got going.

The Trojans brought their intense commitment to Portola on Wednesday, and posted impressive showings all around, beating Portola palpably 99-71.  Alex Lindenberg won the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke, posting personal bests in both races. Annika Nie captured the 50 Freestyle, and Izzy Pagano won the 100 Butterfly. Kate Weiland and Yuuri Yoshikawa took the top two places in the 100 Breastroke. With strong performances up and down their lineup throughout the meet, the UNI girls demonstrated their ability to respond to adversity, and gave their school reason to expect even more from the rest of the season.

Boys Tennis

The top ranked boys tennis team defeated Irvine high 16 to 2 on Tuesday to move to 10 and 0 on the year and 3-0 in the Pacific Coast league.  Freshmen Conrad Brown led the Trojans sweeping his three sets at singles.  The boys will be in action on Thursday (March 21) at Woodbridge and will also compete in the National All-American tournament Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.

Track & Field

Boys Track had their league opener against Northwood here at Uni last Thursday. Some our stand out performances came from Adam Gish in the 1600, Steven Li in the 400, Lance Deolden in the 100, Adam Gish and Michael Blinstrub in the 800, Ben Chi in the Triple jump, Evan Pariser, Noah Powell in the Shot. We are up next against Portola. Go Trojan track and Field!

We had our first league meet against Northwood on Thursday 03/14. We had some outstanding performances by Collette Lowengrub in the 1600 and 800, Jenna Kim in the 100 and 200, and Cecilia Langlois and Avery Klauke in the 3200 M run. In the field events, seniors Amber Sun in the high jump and Sandy Zhang in the triple jump, scored some points for the team as well. This Thursday (3/21) we are up against Portola and are excited for the season ahead. Go Uni Girls Track and Field!
