Spring Sports Update

Check out this link to the Sports Section of the Sword & Shield for sports articles written by Uni Students:

Last week baseball had a tough time against the tough pitching of Irvine. Adam Axtell went 6 innings and struck out 9 but the offense couldn’t put together any runs losing 4-0. On Friday, Irvine won 7-0 as the offense struggled to put runs on the board.

Boys Golf

The University Boys Golf team had a close call against Northwood last Thursday at Oak Creek Golf Course.  They escaped with a close match of 204 to 208.  This past Tuesday, the Uni Boys Golf team came back strong against Portola at Strawberry Farms Golf Course with a 194 to 226 win.  George Lu finished 1 under Par of 35 to pace both teams in scoring.

Today, the team travels to Oak Creek Golf Course to take on Irvine High School.  With a win today, it will set the stage for next week’s showdown with Woodbridge on Tuesday (The GOW) and Beckman on Thursday to determine the PCL Champion.  As of today, Beckman, University, and Woodbridge are tied for 1st place with each having only one loss.

Come cheer them on next Tuesday at the GOW.  Home course is Strawberry Farms Golf Course.  1st tee time will be 3pm.

Boys Lacrosse

The University Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team defeated Portola for the season sweep Monday with a 15-7 win. It was our last away game and Portola was ready and waiting to give it everything they had to try and defeat the mighty Trojans. The first half was back and forth, but seniors Brandon Hariyanto, Oliver Kubit and Trevor Lucas Hall lead the way for the Trojans strong finish.

You can view the entire game on YouTube. Today Varsity takes on Irvine in the stadium at 4:00pm, please come and cheer on your Trojans!

Girls Lacrosse

The Lady Trojans played the most challenging game of the year against Beckman, at home, last Friday.  After falling behind, 0-3, the team rallied to pull within 1 point.  The game stayed super close, both teams alternating goals for the majority of the first half, ending 6-7. Beckman leading at halftime.  The second half started with Uni establishing the first lead of the game with 15 minutes remaining.  Again, amazing defensive play from both sides and solid offensive work kept the teams close.  Uni managed to go up two goals with almost six minutes of playing time left on the clock, but a series of unfortunate plays and solid defense by Beckman allowed the Patriots to steal the ball and score the game winning goal with just under a minute left.  Final score: 12-13, Beckman.  Mya Wang (So.) and Kaylor Chott (Sr.) led the Trojans in goals with three apiece and Grace Colunga (Jr.) notched two.  Defensive efforts by Caroline Mumm (So.), Donia Mohtashami (Sr.), Makenzie Field (Sr.) helped to slow the Beckman offense.

Play resumed as Uni met Portola for the 2nd round of league play, and the Trojans erturned to their winning ways, controlling the game in a 20-3 victory.  Wang netted 6 goals and Chott earned3 assists.  Katherine Courtiss (So.) both netted her first goal of the year and scooped up 3 ground balls during her defensive shifts.

Just yesterday, the team traveled to Irvine to face a much improved and more dynamic squad.  The score was tied after ten minutes of play, 3-3, but the team dug deep second half and cruised to a 19-11 victory.  The most impressive moment was when Uni was sitting on two yellow cards, playing with five defenders against seven attackers, and not only shut down Irvine’s offense, but scored a short handed goal (made by Chott) after an interception and some quick movement up field.  Wang led with 8 goals, Colunga added 3, and Elliot Welsh (So.) added 2.

The team is back in action at home against non-league opponent Santiago HS and finishes league play next week.

Come out and support Uni Softball next Monday, April 22, as they take on Woodbridge in their last home game of the season!  Game starts at 3:30 PM.

Boys Swimming

The University Boy’s Varsity Swim team defeated Beckman to complete their perfect PCL regular season with a record of 5 – 0. Leading the way with 1st place finishes in their individual events were Brian Lou (200 IM & 100 Free), Luke Venzlaff (50 Free), Caedon Ng (500 Free), and Matthew Lou (100 Breaststroke). University placed first in all three relays. The boys head into League Finals next week hoping to secure their first League Title in the last four years! In addition to their League success, the Uni boys achieved great success in winning the Foothill Games Invitational over the weekend! This is a highly-competitive invitational featuring most of the top teams in Orange County. Uni entered the final event of the meet ahead of league rival Northwood, 327 – 320. Both Uni’s A and B relay teams moved up from their prelims ranking to seal the Trojan win! Additionally, the A relay team broke the all-time school record in the event, with a sizzling time of 3:06.02! This record-breaking squad was composed of senior Aaron Lee (lifetime best on the lead-off leg), and juniors Hunter Kroll, Caedon Ng, and Brian Lou!

Girls Swimming

In the past week the Varsity girls have had two meets. The Foothill Games provided a late season test for Uni’s Varsity girls, as 15 top teams compete in a prelim/final meet.  Many swimmers achieved personal bests, and several qualified for the weekend’s finals; some even posted CIF consideration times. Our Medley Relay, comprising Alex Lindenberg (backstroke), Mirabella Levine (breastroke), Izzy Pagano (butterfly), and Annika Nie (freestyle), pushed successfully to come back for finals. Savanna Cruz and Ira Chaturvedi each dropped nearly three seconds in her 200 freestyle, while Alex Lindenberg powered into the finals in both the 200 and the 500 freestyle events. Kate Weiland dropped nearly six seconds in her 200 individual medley to qualify to swim on Saturday, leading Jean Meyer and Kristina Yan, who also posted best times in the grueling event. Leila Mirsafian and Jordan Gibbons powered to personal bests in the 50 freestyle. Ira Chaturvedi posted another personal best in the 100 butterfly. Leila Mirsafian dropped more than a second from her 100 freestyle, earning the chance to swim in finals. Annika Nie and Yuuri Yoshikawa also achieved personal bests in the very competitive 100 freestyle. Savanna Cruz also posted a personal best in the 500 freestyle. Sage Goldberg and Nicole Kwong scored personal bests in the 100 backstroke, following Jean Meyer, who dropped more than a second from her best time to claim a lane and return for the finals on Saturday. Kate and Mirabella both earned CIF consideration times, and Mirabella shot into the fastest weekend heat.

On Wednesday, Beckman visited Uni High, for the last dual meet of the season. The Trojans performed at a high level, showing that the team is near ready for the league championships. The meet began with the Uni girls taking both first and second place in the 200 Medley Relay. Freshman Alex Lindenberg once again posted a strong performance in the 200 freestyle. Mirabella Levine, swimming the 200 Individual Medley for the first time this season, swam to a CIF consideration time of 2:15.68. Izzy Pagano won the 100 yard butterfly, and Annika Nie swam her best time in the 100 yard freestyle. Freshman Jean Meyer maintained a vigorous pace in the 500 freestyle despite the heat to win the race by 14 seconds. Yuuri Yoshikawa won the 100 breaststroke, while Kristina Yan took third with a personal best time.

League finals are next week and then it is off to CIF on May 2 & May 4!

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team defeated Woodbridge 15 to 3 on Tuesday to clinch their 14th straight PCL title.  The Trojans have won 128 straight PCL matches dating back to 2006!  Leading the way for the boys were senior Giorgio Conta and sophomore Nic Conta sweeping their three sets at doubles.  The boys conclude the regular season today with a match at Beckman high.
