Boys Golf

The boys finished their regular season undefeated at home and captured their First League Championship in 18 years!  The team competed in the league finals (Monday and Tuesday) to determine who will represent the Pacific Coast League in CIF Individuals on Monday, 5/6/19 at Sky Links Golf Course.  After 2 hard fought days and 36 holes later, Senior Connor O’Brien captured PCL League Individual Champion with an impressive final day of 5 under par 67 to finish with a two day total of 141 (3 under par).  Also representing University High School will be Sophomore George Lu and Steven Li.  Only the top 8 players out of 36 gets the honor to represent our league at CIF Individuals.

Congratulations to these boys and wish them all the luck next Monday!!

Girls Lacrosse

The Girls Lacrosse program celebrated its first ever PCL League Championship this season, highlighting their talent in a dominant 18-10 victory over league stalwart Beckman!

Despite losing by one goal earlier in the season to the same team at home, the girls swaggered onto Beckman’s field knowing they had something to prove…and prove it they did.  Jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first couple minutes, the Lady Trojans never surrendered that lead.  A balanced offense allowed six different goal scorers to find the back of the net.  Mya Wang (So.) and Grace Colunga (Jr.) led the scoring with five goals apiece, but Kaylor Chott (Sr.) added three, Olivia Biase and Elliot Welsh (both sophomores) each netted twice, and Madeleine Lalonde (So.) also scored.  A good offense needs support from a solid defense and the footwork and strength of the defense was on display.  Led by Donia Mohtashami (sr.),and Makenzie Field (Sr.), the defense took control of their side of the field and made Beckman work hard for every shot.  Strong shifts by Caroline Mumm (So.) and Erin Jeon (Fr.) frustrated Beckman and, with ten minutes left to play, it was obvious the team wasn’t going to let this win slip away.  Congratulations to the team on winning the Pacific Coast League for the first time in history.

US Lacrosse hosts the post-season tournament for boys and girls lacrosse.  For the second straight year, Uni (11th overall in the county) found itself paired with Aliso Niguel (6th overall in the county).  Despite playing solid lacrosse, the Lady Trojans did not advance past the first round of playoffs.

None the less, we wish a fond farewell to the graduating Seniors and look forward to most of the squad returning next year for another run at a league championship and another spot in the post-season.  Thank you to the players, the parents, and all the fans that came out to support the team this season!

Girls Swimming

The Varsity girls flooded into the preliminary trials of the Pacific Coast High School League Championship, dripping passion and preparation. The Trojans did their best, posting personal bests and winning positions in the finals scheduled for Friday.  In virtually every event, there were impressive swims from Uni High.

In the 200 yard freestyle, Chloe Johansson, Ira Chaturvedi, and Savanna Cruz all posted personal bests, as Savanna and Ira earned spots in the consolation finals. Alex Lindenberg qualified sixth for the championship heat.

Jean Meyer and Kristina Yan each posted a personal best time to qualify for the consolation finals in the 200 yard Individual Medley; Kate Weiland claimed a spot in the finals, as did Mirabella Levine, who also posted a personal best.

Annika Nie, Izzy Pagano, and Leila Mirsafian all grabbed spots in the splash and dash, 50 yard freestyle.

In an extraordinary swim, Izzy also gained a spot in the championship final of the 100 yard butterfly, swimming a CIF consideration time. Ira Chaturvedi earned a spot in the consolation finals.

Uni’s super sprinters, Annika Nie and Leila Mirsafian both posted personal bests to earn spots in the championship final in the 100 yard freestyle.

Chloe Johansson, Lia Cui, Savanna Cruz, and Alex Lindenberg all swam personal bests in the 500 yard freestyle. Lia earned a spot in the consolation finals, while Savanna and Alex pulled into the championship round. Alex’s 5:21.35 marked the CIF consideration time she’d been chasing all summer. The 500 figures to be vigorously contested, and Alex will be in the middle of the competition.

Jean Meyer shaved .12 off her personal best in the 100 backstroke, winning a spot in the 100 yard backstroke consolation finals.

All four of Uni’s breastrokers, Kristina Yan, Yuuri Yoshikawa, Kate Weiland, and Mirabella Levine, posted personal bests. Yuri joined Kate and Mirabella in earning a CIF qualifying time, and the three will all compete in the championship final, promising a finish crowded with Trojans.

The team is headed to CIF Prelims today at the Riverside Aquatics Complex.

Go Trojans!

Boys Tennis

The Uni boys tennis program is proud to announce…

On Saturday evening, after three grueling days playing two matches a day, Aditya Gupta became just the 2nd Trojan to win the prestigious Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament.  (Gage Brymer, 2011-2013)  Adi was the top seeded singles player in the 119th version of the oldest and most prestigious junior tennis tournament in the nation.  In addition, Luis Moros and Michael Rudin represented Uni in the Ojai doubles draw and together the three Uni boys won the coveted Griggs Cup.  Every high school from the Central Coast to the San Diego southern border enters one singles player and one doubles team.  A point is awarded for each match win and the school with the most points takes home the Griggs Cup.  This is the 6th time Uni has won this award.

The boys also won their 14th straight Pacific Coast League title and will begin their CIF playoff run this Thursday at the Uni Courts.

Sport: Tennis

Year: Senior

Noteworthy: He won the boys singles championships at the prestigious Ojai Tournament. Gupta had to go the comeback route to defeat Wally Thayne of Newbury Park in the final 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. He was unable to play at The Ojai last year because of shin splints and did not compete in the recent Pacific Coast League Finals so he could be better prepared for The Ojai. “It feels pretty great especially not being able to play last year,” said Gupta, who will be at Penn this fall. “(Winning) was one of my main goals for high school tennis.”
