Cross Country

The boys finished up their season this last Tuesday at Mason Park. The majority of the boys set season best times or all time personal bests. Our top runners at the meet included Ryan Duffy, Raja Batra, Adam Gish, Michael Blinstrub, Dylan Muniz, Abhi Nisha Anish and Brandon Kershaw. The boys might be done but are looking forward to cheering on their lady team mates at CIF next Saturday. Go Trojan Running!

On Tuesday (10/30), our Cross Country team had an amazing day at the Pacific Coast League Finals. Collette Lowengrub ran away from the field and WON the entire race in a time of 17:35 over three miles. She is only a sophomore and is the PCL MVP! This is the #10 fastest time in Uni school history, and we are looking forward to seeing what she can do in the postseason. The rest of the team also pulled through and qualified for CIF in a big upset against Northwood.

The last time we had a girls team go to CIF was in 2000!!!!! This was also the last time we had an individual PCL winner (Shey Manafian). We are no CIF champs, but we have come a long way from getting dead last in league just 3 years ago 😉 If you see any of these girls please tell them great job! (Avery Klauke, Sydney Field, Marta Meinardi, Collette Lowengrub, Amberley Martinez, Cecilia Langlois and Alissa Kopylova – not pictured)

University girls golf finishes first again in CIF Southern Regional, just ahead of Woodbridge, Beckman

By DAMIAN V. DOTTORE |
PUBLISHED: October 29, 2018 at 11:25 pm | UPDATED: October 29, 2018 at 11:25 pm

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – The University girls golf team began defense of its CIF State championship on Monday the same way it started its historic postseason run last fall – by winning the CIF-SS Southern Team Regional.

Alexis Kim holed two birdies on her bogey-free round to card a 2-under-par 70 to help the Trojans shoot 382 to finish first in the event for the second year in a row and lead a Pacific Coast League sweep of the top three spots on the Classic Course at Mile Square Park Golf Course.

Woodbridge placed second with a 384 and Beckman was third at 386. Those three teams advance to the SCGA Team Qualifying Tournament on Thursday in Oxnard.

“We know that if we play our game, we will do well, so there is not too much pressure,” Kim said. “We are hopeful (to defend the state championship), but we can’t expect anything because it can be anybody’s day. We are just going to keep practicing hard, and hopefully we will get good results.”

Kim posted the second-lowest score of the tournament as La Serna senior Briana Chacon earned medalist honors with a 69.

“It is a little frustrating because I was so close (to the 69), but I was really happy overall because I was so consistent.”

The Trojans overall were quite steady on the Classic Course, as three of the five scoring players shot in the 70s. Nodoka Honda, the Register’s 2017 O.C. Player of the Year, carded a 1-under-par 71 for the Trojans and Dana Choi added a 73.

“This feels great,” University coach Kevin Kasper said. “This is a special year for us because coming off all of the things that we did last year, it was going to be tough after we lost a couple of our really good players (to graduation). We still felt like we had a pretty good core of players and could repeat if we played well.”

In total, 10 of the 15 scoring players for University, Woodbridge and Beckman posted scores in the 70s. The Patriots earned bragging rights among the three programs with four sub-80 scores – Sophie Nguyem (71), Euna Lee (76), Nari Ok (77) and Jae Lee (79).

That came as a bit of surprise to Beckman coach Cheyne Blair because every time he saw one of his girls on the course, it seemed they had missed another green in regulation.

“But we have talked a few times about how important it is to have a good short game,” he said. “While I am surprised we are taking third in such a strong region, I am not surprised they shot these scores. The three of us (Beckman, Uni and Woodbridge) beat up on each other all year long.”

This was the second consecutive season in which the Warriors finished as runner-up behind the Trojans in a regional.

“Since it is to University, it takes away a lot of the sting,” Woodbridge coach Tracy Roberts said. “They are defending state champions, back-to-back champions here, so all you can do is take your hat off. My girls played really well. They didn’t lose. They got beat.”

Yuki Yoshihara (72), Azumi Aria (73) and Caylee Chung (75) led Woodbridge.

Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos tied for fourth place at 392.

Girls Tennis

The Girl’s tennis team is ranked #1 in the CIF SS Open Division!  The team received a bye in the first round, so they will not be playing until the semifinals on Nov. 7, which will be played at home!  Come out and support the team!

New Open Division for girls tennis playoffs shrinks before first serve

By DAN ALBANO | dalbano@scng.com | Orange County Register
PUBLISHED: October 30, 2018 at 12:47 am | UPDATED: October 30, 2018 at 9:28 am

A new Open Division for the girls tennis playoffs, previewed by the CIF-Southern Section as an eight-team tournament, surprisingly shrunk to six teams Monday during the release of the draw.

University, Orange County’s top-ranked team and No. 1 in the section, earned the top seed as expected but will have a first-round bye in the six-team tournament. The Trojans will not play until the semifinals Nov. 7.

“I am mixed,” University coach John Kessler said of the field. “With the old way, the top teams played a lot of tennis in a short period of time and missed a lot of school. … I am not sure about six. I am concerned about getting out of the routine with over a week off. We shall see.”  Corona del Mar, ranked No. 2 in Orange County, also earned a bid to Open Division. The Sea Kings open Friday at home against Palos Verdes, whom they beat 10-8 in Newport Beach early in the season.

The winner plays University in the semifinals.

“It is what it is,” Corona del Mar coach Jamie Gresh said of the six-team field. “CdM is excited to play in the Open Division.”

Campbell Hall earned the No. 2 seed and will play the winner of Arcadia and Peninsula in the semifinals.  Mira Costa and Foothill were ranked seventh and eighth in the final Division 1 poll and remained in Division 1. They are seeded first-second, just ahead of No. 3 Beckman, which won Division 2 last season.  “The best teams were selected to play in the Open Division,” said Thom Simmons, Southern Section spokesman and assistant commissioner. “We do not feel the need to create an Open Division and then simply fill a bracket to fill a bracket.”

The Pacific Coast League could again fare well in Division 2 this season. Woodbridge earned an at-large berth and the top seed in the division.

Magnolia and Century are seeded second and third in Divisions 4 and 5, respectively.

Boys Water Polo

Huge congrats to the Boys Water Polo team!  They qualified for CIF for the first time in 7 years!  They defeated Xavier Prep in the first round of the CIF Play-offs on Tuesday.  There was a great article in the Desert Sun with some pictures and video from Tuesday’s game.  You can check it out here: https://bit.ly/2yJZVsr.

The team will host Alta Loma today (Nov. 1) at Portola high School for round two of the CIF playoffs.  It has been almost 10 years since our team has made it past the first round of playoffs!  Game starts at 5:00 pm.  Come out and support!

Cross Country

UNI XC competed at the famous Mt. Sac Invitational this past weekend. Our girls team raced in the individual sweepstakes race among some of the best in the nation. Collette Lowengrub ran an amazing race, finishing 9th overall with a time of 18:11 on the hilly course. Avery Klauke finished strong in 22nd place with a time of 18:55 which is over a minute faster than her previous time on this course. Rounding out our top 7 was Cecilia Langlois, Alissa Kopylova, Sydney Field, Roseanne Yu and Amberley Martinez. On October 30th we will be competing at the Pacific Coast League Finals at Mason Park where we hope to send multiple runners to CIF.

The boys Cross Country competed this last weekend at the Mt Sac Cross Country Invitational. Our team was limited to 37 runners due all of the construction that has been taking place. Our top boys for the day were Ryan Duffy, Raja Batra, Micheal Blinstrub, Chris Lohmeyer, Adam Gish, Ethan Jenkins and Caio Souza. Next up for the boys is league finals here at Mason Park next Tuesday. Come out and support. Go Trojans!

Football

Tomorrow night is our last football game of the season.  Come help show your support as we honor our seniors on Senior Night against Beckman.  Kickoff is at 7pm!

Girls Golf

Yesterday was the 1st round of Southern Section CIF Individual Championships at Western Hills Country Club. This is as tough a venue as any.  It was a long day and after 6 hours, ALL 3 of our girls competing finished top 36 out of 144 players to move on to the next round at River Ridge in Oxnard, CA. Lexi Kim finished tied for 5th at 75.  Dana Choi 79 and Nodoka Honda 80.

Up next for our PCL Championship team is to defend our Southern Section CIF Title at Miles Square on Monday, Oct. 29th.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team finished the regular season on Monday defeating Beckman to finish 10 and 0 in league play and 16 and 0 for the regular season.  Yesterday the Varsity and JV girls competed in the Pacific Coast league individual tournament.  Freshmen Jane Lee and junior standout Cami Brown won their matches advancing to the semi-final round being held today at Irvine high.  In doubles, sophomores Mya Wang and Emily Markus continued their incredible season winning both matches and advancing to today’s semis.  The girls are currently 33-1 on the season.  Senior captains Jackie Yoon and Kamar Alajeely also won their two matches advancing to today semi-final match.  The girls will begin the CIF team playoffs next Friday as the #1 team in Division 1.

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team played its first playoff match in nine year last week. Falling short in a thrilling 4 set match against Burroughs in Burbank. The girls were feeding off the energy of the crowd and were looking to upset the host team. This season had so many great moments, taking Woodbridge to 5 sets twice, going to playoffs, all the bus rides, the girls came together as a team and now they know what playoffs feels like. Although this season is over, we are proud of these girls and are already looking forward to next year.

Boys Water Polo

The JV /Frosh Soph team had a 1st place victory at the Western Water Polo tournament this last weekend.  After 5 hard fought games, the Trojans walked away with a first place trophy.  Rounding out a great season for the entire water polo team.  Out of 5 tournaments, the Trojans took home two 1st Place trophies and one 2nd place trophy.

League play is now over.  This past week, after winning a victory against Irvine, and suffering a defeat against Beckman, the boys Varsity water polo team has finished their regular season with an 18-11 record.  This is the best record in 7 years that the boys water polo team has seen.  Having a winning record will bring them into consideration for CIF playoffs.  The CIF division playoffs will be announced on Saturday with a possible game on Tuesday.  Leading the team with goals is Sophomores Stewart Campbell and Matt Wallin, while the back court defense is orchestrated by senior captain goalie Cameron Bernardo.  The entire water polo team deserves a congratulations for all their hard work throughout the season, and dedication to each other every day at practice.  Good Luck to the boys water polo team over the next few days.

Other top performances on the girls side came from Cecilia Langlois, Alissa Kopylova and Gwen Sanders. On the boys side, our top runner of the day was Freshman Caio Souza followed by Reese Carlton, Gabriel Hertel and Shuma Jensen. This weekend we will be competing at the famous Mt. Sac Invitational. Uni golfers: Nodoka Honda, Dana Choi, and Alexis Kim finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively at the individual final tournament. Boys Water Polo

After the strong victory last Thursday against Portola and the victory over Irvine on Tuesday, the boys water polo team has accumulated 16 wins on the season, the highest in 6 years.  With two league games left, the team is looking to finish strong, and hopefully be considered into a CIF playoff position.  Sophomore Stewart Campbell and senior goalie Cameron Bernardo lead this group with energy and enthusiasm each game no matter if there is a win or a loss.  Last Tuesday was Senior day, and the boys water polo team is graduating 11 seniors.  The team will miss them, however everybody is looking forward to an up and coming strong class of underclassmen to lead the Trojans to future success.

For the girls we had Collette Lowengrub take 1st overall and Avery Klauke take 2nd overall in the girls Varsity race followed by Ceci Langlois, Marta Meinardi, Amberley Martinez and Gwen Sanders. For the Boys, our top runner was Micheal Blinstrub followed by Raja Batra, Reece Carlton, Chris Lohmeyer, Dylan Muniz, Adam Gish and Abhi Nisha Anish. Next up for the team will be OC Champs this Saturday. Go Trojan running!

Come out and see our football team play what will be an exciting game against Irvine on Friday night.  It is a Pink Out so wear Pink to show your support and raise awareness for breast cancer.  Game time is 7pm!

Girls Golf

We completed the league season yesterday with a victory at Beckman. The girl’s golf team shot a 195 to Beckman’s 208. This win puts us in a tie for first place in league with Woodbridge. If Woodbridge wins their final match today, we will finish as PCL co-champions for the second straight year. Dana Choi and Nodoka Honda capped off their senior season with one over par 37. On Tuesday, Woodbridge edged us out 183-186. Tuesday was the seniors final home match at Strawberry Farms. Nodoka, Dana, and Emy Zhu were recognized in this home finale by their teammates. They have had a successful career on the Uni golf team: 3 time league champs, a CIF southern section title and a CIF state title. We are going to miss them as they move on to the next level. Nodoka will continue with her golf at division 1 Cal State Fullerton. Dana is heading to Georgetown to play on their division 1 golf team. Emy is still undecided, but will definitely carry her academic achievements here at Uni to a prominent school next year. She does not plan to play college golf. The Uni program is very proud of our senior class. Good luck to them in their future.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team moved to 12 and 0 on the season with a hard fought victory over Peninsula high of Rolling Hills Estates.  The top ranked Trojans were led by junior Cami Brown, senior Dana Feng and freshmen Jane Lee who all swept their singles matches.  The girls continue league play with a match today against Portola high at the Uni courts.

Girls Volleyball

Girls volleyball ended its season 6-4 in league and pushed Woodbridge who finished 2nd in league to five games. As we look forward to playoffs for the first time in nine years, we will see who we get in the first round of playoffs when it is announced this Saturday. The girls volleyball program is on the rise here at Uni and we thank everyone for their support over the last three months.

Boys Water Polo

Boys Water Polo plays at home today (10/11) against Portola at 4:00.  The Trojans are hoping to defeat the Bulldogs for the 2nd time this season.  Come out and support the team!

Fall Sports Update

Cross Country

Girls Cross Country had some impressive performances at the Dana Hills Invitational this past weekend. Collette Lowengrub and Avery Klauke ran in the Invitational section among the fastest runners in Orange County. They both ran personal best times of 17:41 (Lowengrub) and 18:00 (Klauke). These were the #10 and #24 fastest times of the entire weekend. Our top seven also included Marta Meinardi, Roseanne Yu, Amberley Martinez, Gwen Sanders, and Reyya Kocagil. This weekend our Varsity team will be competing at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. GO UNI XC!

Boys Cross Country saw some more major improvements at the Dana Hills Cross Country Invitational this last weekend. Our Top runner, Ryan Duffy , had another PR with a time of 15:41 which gets him that much closer to the Uni top 25 All Time list. Also having outstanding performances included Raja Batra, Michael Blinstrub, Adam Gish, Dylan Muniz, Abhi Nisha Anish, Chris Lohmeyer, Ethan Jenkins. This next weekend the boys varsity will also be joining the girls team to compete in Palo Alto at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational. The race can be viewed on Prepcaltrack.com and we are racing Division 1 with boys race at 11am and the girls at 11:30am. Go Trojan Running!

Football

The Trojans will be taking on the Timberwolves tomorrow night in the Uni Stadium for the Homecoming game.  Game starts at 7:00 p.m.  Come out and support and enjoy the Homecoming festivities!

Girls Golf

The girl’s golf team had a productive week as we continue to strive for a PCL title. We beat Woodbridge last Thursday at Rancho San Joaquin, 183 – 193.  Our top two scores came from Alexis Kim, 32, and Nodoka Honda, 34. Dana Choi contributed a one over par 37. Then, on Tuesday this week we topped Beckman 180-188. Both teams played well. We shot an even par 180 as a team, our best team score this season. Beckman also had their best score of the year.  As for Uni, Alexis Kim and Nodoka Honda were 2-under par and Dana Choi shot an even par score of 36. Emily Tao recorded a 37 and Emy Zhu contributed with a 39. This was a great team effort! These two matches gave us a league record of 6-0. We have 4 league matches remaining.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team moved to 7 and 0 on the season, 2-0 in the Pacific Coast League, with a 15 to 3 win over Portola high.  The top ranked team in CIF Division one was led by freshmen Arya Ramalingam who swept her three singles matches including a 6-4 win over Portola’s #1 player.  The girls will be in action today against Irvine high at the Uni courts.

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team had a heart stopping match on Tuesday against Northwood to solidify their spot in the CIF playoffs for the first time in nine years. The Trojans went 5 sets in a match that was so tight that it could have gone either way. The girls came together knowing what was on the line and played strong to finish off Northwood on their senior night. The program, which has won more matches this year than in years past, also has a very strong F/S and JV team. Tonight is the team’s senior night, it will be a very good match as Portola rolls into the gym and the Trojans need to continue to win to keep this playoff birth alive.

Boys Water Polo

The Boys Water Polo team plays at home today in a league match against Irvine High.  Frosh/Soph plays at 3:15, Varsity plays at 4:00 and JV follows at 5:00.  Come out to the pool this afternoon and cheer on the Trojans as they take on the Vaqueros.
